ELGIN, IA (IRN) – The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man from Cedar Rapids as part of a sexual assault investigation in Elgin, according to KCRG-TV. Deputies were called to a home early Thursday morning for a report of a sexual assault. A 45-year-old female was transported to a hospital where she was treated for her injuries. Deputies arrested 49-year-old Devin Cummings, who faces a 3rd Degree Sexual Abuse charge, a class C Felony. He’s in jail.

MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – A 64-year-old Mason City woman died in a house fire Tuesday evening, according to KIMT-TV. First responders found Nancy Thompson on her bedroom floor shortly after they were called to her home. The fire was caused by combustibles that were placed too close to a wall lamp in the kitchen.

DELHI, IA (IRN) – Officials are planning to start refilling Lake Delhi, now that the $16 million restoration project has been finished. The 9-mile-long lake on the Maquoketa River emptied in July 2010 when heavy rain caused the previous dam to fail. KCRG-TV reports the lake could refill in as little as four days or take three or more weeks, depending on rainfall and river flow.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – The former University of Iowa student who killed his girlfriend will spend the rest of his life in a Chinese prison. WHO-TV reports Xiangnan Li was sentenced this week in China. Li admitted to killing 20-year-old Iowa State student Tong Shao in September 2014 before fleeing to China. Shao’s body was found in the trunk of her car three weeks after her death.

WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – A 37-year-old Iowan has been given life in prison for killing a Minnesota man outside a nightclub in Waterloo, according to KGAN-TV. Rodolfo Gonzalez was convicted of shooting to death 35-year-old Celio Posada, of Minneapolis, in 2014. The two met at the nightclub and later left for the parking lot, where witnesses reported hearing gunfire. Gonzalez says he was defending himself after Posada menaced him with a knife.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (IRN) – Three Iowa students traveled to Washington D.C. to be recognized at a ceremony Sunday after being named Presidential Scholars. Sonali Durham of Iowa City, Sarah Gao of Cedar Falls and Joseph Tibbs of Iowa Falls were honored among 160 of the country’s brightest high school students. Gao will be attending Rice University next year to major in sociology. Tibbs will go to UNI to study biochemistry and physics. Durham will attend Yale University in the fall.

WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A 4-year-old boy is recovering after nearly drowning in a West Des Moines pool Tuesday. KCCI-TV reports paramedics were called to the Valley View Aquatic Center, where they found lifeguards attending to the boy, who was unresponsive but breathing. The child was found underwater in the kids’ pool area, pulled from the water, and lifeguards performed CPR, saving his life. The boy was hospitalized, then released.
