DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A 12-year-old was hit by a car while crossing the street on the southside of Des Moines early this morning, according to WHO-TV. A nurse who was a witness cared for the child while waiting for an ambulance to arrive. The child was taken to Methodist Hospital with serious injuries. Darkness may have played a role in the accident.

FAYETTE COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Five people were taken to the hospital yesterday after a crash in Fayette County. KWWL-TV reports Nathan Gebel of Lansing failed to yield at an intersection and struck a pickup driven by Steven Chase from Waterloo. The two drivers and three passengers were hospitalized. Gebel will be cited for not yielding.

SPRINGVILLE, IA (IRN) – A woman has died after she crashed into a Springville school bus in Linn County Monday. KGAN-TV reports 26-year-old Molly Zelinskas died from her injuries the next day. Zelinskas drove into the bus as it was dropping off a student. A parent picking up their child at the stop said the bus was stopped and had its flashing lights on. A student was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

ANKENY, IA (IRN) – Two pit bulls wandering an Ankeny neighborhood killed a Chihuahua Monday morning, according to WHO-TV. An 81-year-old woman was able to grab her Chihuahua and make a dash for her garage when the pit bulls turned on her. Fortunately, the garage door coming down scared the pit bulls away. The two pit bulls were declared vicious after a previous attack in 2014. Their owner apologized, and may face a fine.

CORALVILLE, IA (IRN) – The longest-serving police chief in Iowa will soon retire from his job. KCRG-TV reports Coralville police chief Barry Bedford plans to retire shortly after the new year. He’s been in the position since 1988, and with the department since 1974. Chief Bedford recently turned 66. State law doesn’t allow people older than 65 to be police officers.

CASCADE, IA (IRN) – The last time the Chicago Cubs were in the World Series, Kurt Ade of Cascade had just returned from Europe after serving in World War II. KWWL-TV reports Ade says he and other enlisted men listened to the World Series outside of the Officer’s Club, which they weren’t allowed to enter. He’s been a Cubs fan since his dad took him to his first game in 1930. The Cubs honored him this season as he took the field with Manager Joe Maddon.
