FORT DODGE, IA (IRN) – Police in Fort Dodge said a former high school swim coach has been charged with sexual assault. KCCI-TV reports that 23-year-old Aaron Poldervaart, an employee with the Fort Dodge Community School District, has allegedly committed sex acts upon a Fort Dodge Senior High student. Poldervaart served as an Assistant Boys and Girls Swim Coach during the 2015-2016 season.
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A Cedar Rapids man has been accused of stabbing another man in the head and neck. KWWL-TV reports 37-year-old Tramond Franklin turned himself into officers. He’s charged with willful injury.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A northwest Iowa man who hit five cyclists without bike lights several years ago is now pushing for stricter bike laws. The Des Moines Register reports Daryl Hasche hit five teenage girls with his motorcycle while riding in the dark five years ago. The cyclists were riding side by side, and didn’t have any lights on their bikes. A bill requiring flashing rear-facing lights on bicycles between sunset and sunrise is being written.
MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – A woman has been arrested for an alleged ambush at the Cerro Gordo County Courthouse, according to KIMT-TV. 50-year-old Misti Lynn Thoe of Mason City is charged with willful injury causing serious injury. Thoe waited for a woman to exit the courthouse and then smashed her head into the concrete corner of the building. There were four witnesses, and a security camera captured the assault.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Fences have been placed between Des Moines City Hall and the Des Moines River after a sinkhole developed near the levee Monday morning. KCCI-TV reports that the hole is about 150 feet long and 25 feet wide. Business owners in the East Village are being notified that crews will soon be filling the hole. Officials are unsure what caused it.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The U.S.D.A.’s summary of last year’s corn crop shows it was record setting for Iowa farmers. KCRG-TV reports corn production reached 2.74 billion bushels, 9% above the previous record set in 2015. Farmers harvested an average of 203 bushels per acre, marking the first time Iowa’s statewide yield surpassed 200 bushels per acre. The state has led the nation in corn production for the last 23 consecutive years.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Governor Terry Branstad is having trouble getting his paperwork together for his new job, according to WHO-TV. President Donald Trump nominated Branstad to be the next U.S. Ambassador to China. He’s required to document all foreign travel, and he’s having a hard time doing it. Branstad counts 17 trips to Japan, another 6 to China, along with numerous other trips overseas. Branstad says some records were destroyed in a fire.
