GRAETTINGER, IA (IRN) – Three tanker cars of ethanol remain in a rural creek, three days after a fiery train derailment in northwestern Iowa near Graettinger. KCRG-TV reports the fire finally went out midday Sunday. Federal safety officials say 15 of 20 tanker cars filled with ethanol left the tracks, with five plunging into the creek.
OMAHA, NE (IRN) – Department store operator Gordmans is filing for bankruptcy protection and plans to liquidate the inventory of its 106 discount stores. The Omaha, Nebraska-based company announced today it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Gordman’s has stores in Des Moines, West Des Moines, Coralville, Waterloo, Council Bluffs, Davenport, and Sioux City as well as locations in 21 other states.
DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A police chase Saturday night ended with a crash and the arrest of a Dubuque woman. KCRG-TV reports police arrested 41-year-old Rebecca Dodds on multiple charges. Police saw Dodds driving over a curb, then chased her until she crashed and fled on foot. Officers eventually caught her.
AMES, IA (IRN) – An Ames home is a total loss after flames broke out Sunday night, according to WHO-TV. Officials believe the home was unoccupied at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. Reports from neighbors lead firefighters to believe squatters may have been inside the home earlier Sunday.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Congressman Steve King ignited a social media firestorm Sunday with his tweet praising an anti-immigrant leader from the Netherlands. King tweeted “Wilders understands that culture and demographics are our destiny. We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies.” Geert Wilders is a politician who is publicly anti-Islam and wants to shut down mosques, ban the Koran and refuse Muslim immigrants from coming into the Netherlands. King’s statement was condemned by both Republicans and Democrats.
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – It’s an annual tradition, as people moved their clocks ahead for daylight saving time yesterday. Fire departments across the nation remind everyone to switch the batteries in their fire detectors. Firefighters say a working smoke detector decreases a family’s chance of dying in a fire by 50 percent.
