DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines high school was placed on lockdown Friday after a teenager was spotted with a gun. KCCI-TV reports a school resource officer at Lincoln High School saw the 17-year-old outside the school and took him into custody. The teenager was not a current Des Moines Public School student.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Police have arrested two suspects they say were part of an assault on a couple in the Des Moines skywalk earlier this month. Eighteen-year-old Jeffrey Smith Jr. has been charged with one count of assault causing injury. A 13-year-old male has been referred to juvenile courts on one count of assault causing injury.

WINNESHIEK COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A fatal auto accident is under investigation in northeast Iowa. The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office hasn’t released additional information.

ELY, IA (IRN) – The Ely Public Library received the Iowa Literacy Award Friday for its work to prevent something called “summer slide.” This is when students lose a significant amount of knowledge in math and reading over summer break. In five years more than 300 volunteers have worked one-on-one with kids during the two and one half months long program.
