IOWA (IRN) – As of 10:00 a.m. today, the Iowa Department of Public Health reports there have been 50,813 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since Iowa’s outbreak began. There have been 678 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, and ten additional deaths for a statewide death toll of 964.
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A 49-year-old man has been charged with the beating death of his 71-year-old mother in Cedar Rapids. George Deason is charged with first-degree murder and assault on a police officer. He reportedly threatened officers with what he told them was a handgun and resisted arrest. Officers charged George with robbery and assault among other charges and determined he caused life-threatening injuries to his mother Elsie in order to steal around $50. Deason’s mother died from her injuries.
MARION, IA (IRN) – The Marion Fire Department said a family of eight had to be treated for carbon monoxide poisoning after they ran their vehicle in a partially closed garage in order to charge cell phones. The family went to the hospital.
IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign has sued two Democratic-leaning Iowa counties that are making it easy to vote by mail during the coronavirus pandemic, seeking to invalidate tens of thousands of voters’ absentee ballot applications. The Trump campaign, the Republican National Committee and other GOP groups filed the lawsuits Tuesday against elections officials in Linn and Johnson counties.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Vice President Mike Pence praised the White House’s support for farmers and law enforcement officers at a pair of events in the Des Moines area Thursday against the backdrop of rising coronavirus cases and devastating storm damage. The visit came as Iowa hit a grim new milestone in the pandemic, surpassing 50,000 positive cases, and as farmers grappled with millions of acres of crop damage. More than 200,000 Iowa customers remained without power after Monday’s storm.
