DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa State Patrol will conduct a special enforcement effort aimed at cracking down on speeding. The statewide Traffic Fatality Reduction Task Force effort will be happening Thursday, Sept. 16. Recent data tracking speeding violations from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2020, shows a 74 percent increase in drivers exceeding the speed limit by 25 mph or more. Officials said 1,497 drivers were cited for speeds that exceeded 100 mph. Violations increased 108% compared to the four-year average.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Hospitals in Iowa are seeing a troubling trend — an increase of child patients. From RSV to COVID-19 to traumatic injuries, whichever the ailment, authorities say there aren’t enough beds to go around. Seven percent of COVID-19 hospitalizations in Iowa are patients 17 and under.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines mother is facing charges after witnesses captured video of her abusing her son at a gas station. Rejanie Morris is charged with child endangerment and two counts of assault. Witnesses recorded her yelling at her 9-year-old son before picking him up by the arms and throwing him face down on the ground.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds on Tuesday set a special legislative session for Oct. 5 to approve redrawn legislative and congressional district maps. Reynolds signed a proclamation convening the special session to take up redistricting, a once-a-decade process that was complicated by the pandemic and a delay in getting the data from the Census Bureau.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Cedar Rapids Jefferson won’t play crosstown rivals Kennedy in football this Friday night. Activities Director Chris Deam announced the program will not be able to field a varsity football team due to COVID-19 cases and ‘mounting injuries.’
