CHELSEA, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Public Safety says a man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in the town of Chelsea in Tama County. Law enforcement agencies responded to a call and found 28-year-old Dewey Wilfong III walking with a handgun. A Tama County Deputy fired one shot, hitting him in the chest. Wilfong was taken to the hospital, where he died.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Marshalltown man was taken into custody Thursday after an hours-long standoff with authorities at a house in Nevada. The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office had gotten a tip that an armed man had meth inside the home and was possibly distributing it. The Story County SWAT team in a heavily armored vehicle was able to take him into custody.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa lawmakers approved the new redistricting maps that will impact political boundaries for the next decade. On Thursday, Democrats and Republicans agreed that the second set of maps were fair, nonpartisan and met all constitutional requirements. Wapello County would fall in Iowa’s third district which would trigger a faceoff between the district’s current representatives: Democrat Rep. Cindy Axne and Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks.
MARION, IA (IRN) – One day after the Iowa Legislature approved new redistricting maps, Congresswoman Ashley Hinson announced she will be running for re-election in Iowa’s new 2nd Congressional District in 2022. Hinson currently represents District 1, but under the new maps, Linn County, where she lives, will be in District 2.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – During the redistricting special session, Republicans introduced a bill that could make it possible for Iowans to opt out of vaccine mandates set by businesses. The House and Senate passed the measure.
