DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa’s Supreme Court overturned a ruling last week, stating the Iowa Constitution does not provide a right to an abortion. That’s green lit the 24-hour waiting period law, and with Friday’s Supreme Court decision from Washington, D.C., that opens the door for Iowa to ban abortions. But as of today, abortions are still legal in Iowa. For that to change, the legislature would have to pass a law and Gov. Kim Reynolds would have to sign it. In order to pass an abortion ban, the Iowa Legislature would have to wait until the next session begins in January. Gov. Reynolds could also call a special session this summer or fall to pass something sooner.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – An abortion-rights protestor’s foot was run over by a truck while crossing the street in front of the Federal Court building in Cedar Rapids Friday evening. The Cedar Rapids Police Department said a group of protestors were legally crossing the street when the traffic lights changed, giving the right of way to vehicles on 8th Ave. A verbal confrontation between a driver and protestors lead to the driver of the truck purposely driving into the protestors.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Hours after the Supreme Court overturned the long-standing Roe v. Wade ruling protecting the right to an abortion, hundreds of Iowans united and protested in opposition of the decision. The demonstrators marched from Des Moines Public Schools’ Central Campus and down Grand Avenue to the governor’s mansion on Terrace Hill. Once the crowd arrived at Terrace Hill, they left their signs of protest atop the fence surrounding the governor’s mansion.

GRANT COUNTY, WI (IRN) – Rescue crews recovered the body of 51-year-old Alan Hartig in the Mississippi River on Friday. Hartig went missing on Wednesday after he tried to recover his pontoon boat. Hartig was last seen chasing the boat in shallow waters.
