AMES, IA (IRN) – Three Iowa State Farmhouse Fraternity members were arrested for allegedly trying to force a fellow member to commit a sex act on one of them and threatening to shoot the victim if he refused.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A vast majority of Des Moines Public Schools students are non-white. Some of those students shared their concerns about a lack of non-white educators and mentors at Thursday’s Youth Town Hall. According to the district, 66 percent of Des Moines Public Schools students are non-white, while 93 percent of educators in Des Moines are white.
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – More federal money is coming to Iowa to support mental health services, especially in schools. Two schools in Iowa received funding through the Mental Health Service Professional grant program. The University of Iowa received more than a million dollars and the Eddyville-Blakesburg Fremont Community School District in southeast Iowa received roughly three-quarters of a million dollars.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Access to affordable childcare is a rising problem in Iowa, which led lawmakers to increase childcare assistance income limits and reimbursement rates. Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a bill into law Thursday that will allow more families to be eligible for childcare assistance. Now, Iowans who make 160% of the federal poverty limit or less can qualify. For a family of four, that’s an annual income of $48,000.
