DES MOINES (IRN) – A Des Moines city councilwoman who hadn’t been to a meeting in months has resigned. WHO-13 reports Indira Sheumaker submitted a letter via family to leave her position. Mayor Frank Cownie had sent a letter to Sheumaker about not attending any meetings since March 6, and had received no response in August.

DES MOINES (IRN) – A Polk County judge denied a motion for mistrial for a teen accused of killing two others in a shooting. KCCI TV reports Preston Walls defense team made the motion after they believed a police witness made inappropriate comments toward the jury about Walls. The teenager is accused of killing Rashad Carr and Gionni Dameron at a Des Moines education center this past January. The trial will continue.

AMES (IRN) – Five athletes connected to several gambling charges at Iowa and Iowa State have entered guilty pleas. The Des Moines Register reports Cyclones Hunter Dekkers, Dodge Sauser, and Jacob Remsburg, and Hawkeyes Aaron Blom and Gehrig Christensen, all pled guilty to underage gambling Wednesday. The five had charges of tampering with records dropped, and each will pay a fin of $645.
