JACKSON COUNTY – Two fatal crashes were reported over the weekend in Northeast Iowa. The Iowa State Patrol reports the first took place on Interstate 380 in Black Hawk County on Saturday evening. A Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling northbound just after 10 p.m. and left the roadway, striking the barrier in the median, and then slid across the interstate onto the outside shoulder. One occupant was killed and another was injured. The second crash occurred near Bellevue on Highway 52 at 3:27 Sunday morning. A Honda SUV was traveling northbound and crossed the center line, striking a southbound Chevrolet Passenger head on. One driver died and the other was injured. All identities in both incidents were not to be released until early this week.
CHEROKEE COUNTY – Governor Kim Reynolds authorized a disaster proclamation for Cherokee County, effective immediately through July 2nd. The USDA has confirmed a positive case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in a commercial turkey flock. This proclamation allows state resources from Iowa Homeland Security, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and other agencies to assist with tracking and monitoring, rapid detection, containment, disposal, and disinfection. The proclamation also waives regulatory provisions related to commercial vehicles responding to affected sites. The recent detections in birds do not present an immediate public health concern, and it remains safe to eat poultry products.
