TAMA, IA (IRN) – A 22-year-old Iowa man was killed in a work accident at a beef processing plant in Tama Wednesday, according to KCRG-TV. Tama police say they were called to the Iowa Premium Beef plant, and when officers and firefighters arrived, they found the man caught in machinery. He died before rescuers arrived. Police have not yet released the man’s identity pending notification of his family.
BURLINGTON, IA (IRN) – Two armed robberies within a week of each other led to the arrest of a Burlington woman, according to WQAD-TV. Police say 28-year-old Emiley Kristina Devore has been charged with first-degree robbery and second-degree robbery. She allegedly showed a knife and demanded cash at a gas station, and implied she had a gun during a robbery at a convenience store. Both robberies were earlier this month.
PITTSBURGH, PA (IRN) – Trial opens next month for a man charged in the western Pennsylvania robbery and murder of two sisters of an Iowa state lawmaker two years ago. KGAN-TV reports jury selection was completed Monday for the trial of 45-year-old Allen Wade. Authorities allege that Wade, who lived next door, killed Sarah Wolfe after she returned home to find Susan Wolfe already slain. The women were the sisters of Democratic Iowa state Rep. Mary Wolfe.
COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA – A motorcyclist died Tuesday night after attempting to flee a traffic stop in Council Bluffs, according to KETV. The accident happened after an officer attempted to stop two motorcycles. Both motorcycles sped away and the driver of a 2006 Yamaha lost control, struck a fence, and was killed. The driver was ejected from the motorcycle while the second motorcycle escaped. Police say the dead motorcyclist had no identification and was driving a stolen motorcycle.
DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – A man was killed in a mobile home fire in Davenport on Monday, according to WQAD-TV. The mobile home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, and firefighters were told someone might be inside the home. The body of 50-year-old Anthony Shelton was found inside after the fire was extinguished.
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Three good Samaritans helped pull an elderly man with disabilities out of a apartment unit moments after an explosion in Cedar Rapids Tuesday. KCRG-TV reports first responders took the man to the University of Iowa hospitals with serious injuries. Broken glass and charred walls are all that’s left of the apartment, and one wall was blown out. Authorities are investigating.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Polk County Board of Supervisors is considering raising the minimum wage, according to KCCI-TV. Iowa’s minimum wage is $7.25, and has not increased in over eight years. Polk County officials says that is too long. John Barnett, owner of I Work & Play, a uniforms shop in West Des Moines pays his employees more than the minimum wage. Barnett believes better wages help retain employees and award good work ethics. He says if he can do it, so can national chain stores.
WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – A high speed chase ended Tuesday in Waterloo with a driver in jail and a car stuck into the side of a house. KWWL-TV reports two young brothers were inside the house at the time playing games when the car entered their nine-year-old sister’s unoccupied bedroom. The driver has been identified as 24-year-old Montavis Keller. He suffered minor injuries and tried to run. However, his pants fell down around his ankles and he was easily captured by police. He’s in jail.
