MOUNT PLEASANT, IA (IRN) – A Mount Pleasant man has been charged for assaulting a female and leaving her in the road. KCRG-TV reports 35-year-old Robert Sinn has been charged with second-degree sexual abuse and possession of stolen property.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A former restaurant employee is accused of robbing the restaurant’s assistant manager in Des Moines. The Des Moines Register reports that 22-year-old Shaun Haltiner faces a robbery charge. Police say Haltiner was wearing a mask when he poked a handgun in the face of the assistant manager of a KFC on Saturday morning. He took about $900.
NEVADA, IA (IRN) – A fire that started last night near Nevada is still burning, according to KCCI-TV.The fire broke out at Dupont’s cellulosic facility which collects bales of corn cobs, leaves, and stalks to be used to make ethanol. A lightning strike likely set the stover site on fire, and more than 10,000 bales are believed to have burned.
GRANDVIEW, IA (IRN) – Rescue workers are still searching for a man who went swimming in the Mississippi River, but he’s now presumed dead. The Hawk Eye in Burlington reports the unidentified man went missing north of Port Louisa Friday night. The man was swimming with a small group of people around 6 p.m. when he ventured too far from shore and disappeared underwater. He was not wearing a life jacket.
OTTUMWA, IA (IRN) – A Friday afternoon crash in Ottumwa between a minivan and a pickup truck proved fatal, according to KTVO-TV. Dead is 92-year-old John Hunt of Ottumwa. Investigators say Hunt was a passenger in a minivan driven by 56-year-old Teresa Vanderpol, who failed to yield and turned into the path of an oncoming pickup drove by a 16-year old male. The impact forced the minivan into a traffic signal pole.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Hundreds of central Iowans took part in a march Sunday evening aimed at raising awareness about mental health. KCCI-TV reports the crowd gathered at Cowles Commons and walked toward the state Capitol building in an attempt to put pressure on Iowa legislators to make mental health a priority. Under Governor Branstad, Iowa has dropped to 49th in the nation for its quality of mental health services.
AMES, IA (IRN) – Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames hoped to earn a place in the Guinness Book of World Records on Sunday but fell just short, according to WHO-TV. The hospital celebrated its 100th anniversary and organizers tried to set a record by gathering the most people in one place who were born at the same hospital. They needed 1,221 there, but fell 24 people short.
