STORY COUNTY, Iowa – One person was airlifted to a Des Moines hospital following a crash on Highway 30 Monday morning. WHO-TV reports the one-car accident happened west of Nevada where a car ended up in a creek under a Highway 30 bridge. The man inside was trapped for a short time. Officials on scene said he may have a broken back.
SIOUX CITY, IA (IRN) – A Sioux City man who carjacked and assaulted his former girlfriend and threatened to kill her was sentenced to 13 years in prison. During the assault he pointed a gun at her face. The US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa reports that Angel Gomez, age 23, received the prison term after a guilty plea. The assault took place after his girlfriend told him she wanted to end their relationship.
SIOUX CITY, IA (IRN) – Severe thunderstorms rolled through northern Iowa early this morning. KTIV-TV reports winds of up to 100 miles an hour in western Iowa, and KWWL-TV reports 93 mph winds at Independence in northeastern Iowa. The Sheldon Regional Airport in O’Brien County received a 95 mile per hour wind gust, and a hanger was damaged and five airplanes in it were destroyed. Baseball-sized hail was reported near Cedar Rapids.
DES MOINES (IRN) – The emerald ash borer has been confirmed in Poweshiek County. The Iowa Department of Agriculture reports that the pest was collected from a city-owned tree in Grinnell. The small, metallic-green beetle native to Asia kills ash trees, and has now been identified in 25 Iowa counties.
DES MOINES (IRN) – A triple-stabbing at a Des Moines party early Sunday has become a homicide investigation. WHO-TV reports 27-year-old Timothy Washington has died, and two others are recovering from stab wounds after an altercation at a home east of the Capitol building. There are 13 witnesses being interviewed.
NODAWAY, IA (IRN) – The Adams County Sheriff’s Office along with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are investigating a suspicious death in the southwestern Iowa town of Nodaway. The investigation is ongoing and the name of the deceased is not being released at this time pending notification of family.
EDDYVILLE, IA (IRN) – An F1 Tornado struck south of Eddyville Saturday night. The National Weather Service reports that the tornado was on the ground for approximately 3.5 miles, was 175 yards wide, and had peak winds of 110 mph. The tornado was accompanied by hail, and while there was property damage, no one was injured.
MOUNT PLEASANT, IA (IRN) – One person died and four others were hurt in a rollover crash in Mount Pleasant on Saturday. The Iowa State Patrol reports that a 15-year-old was driving a minivan when she lost control and rolled into the ditch. All of the victims were from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Sarah White-Young, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene.
DES MOINES (IRN) -Two men were arrested on Saturday after jumping into the Des Moines River in Des Moines while intoxicated. WHO-TV reports 23-year-old Michael Rocha and 33-year-old Anthony Lozano were charged with public intoxication. Police believe the two men went to the Iowa Craft Brew Festival on the Court Avenue Bridge, before jumping into the river to cool off.
