DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Gov. Kim Reynolds announced an executive order establishing The Governor’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board during her Thursday COVID-19 briefing. The board, led by Ruan Transportation CEO Ben McLean, will assess the economic impact of COVID-19 on Iowa businesses and analyze and recommend recovery efforts. Reynolds said the board will “chart a course” for Iowa’s economic comeback.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Workforce Development said Thursday that over $6,200,000 in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance was paid from June 7 to June 13. The department said Iowans filed 9,516 initial unemployment claims.
URBANDALE, IA (IRN) – An Urbandale man is facing a charge of attempted murder following a shooting that injured his wife Tuesday night. WHO-TV reports 45-year-old Andrew Wood was allegedly fighting with his wife when he slapped her. She then punched him and fled into a bathroom. Wood went and got a .32 caliber handgun and fired a shot into the wall between him and his wife, telling her “the next one’s going to be in you.” Wood fired five more shots into the wall and one of them hit his wife in the right bicep.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Public Health reports nine more deaths in the state attributed to COVID-19. There have been 670 total deaths from the coronavirus in the state so far. Of those deaths, 350 were residents of long term care facilities. There are currently outbreaks at 35 long term care facilities in Iowa.
STORM LAKE, IA (IRN) – Racial slurs interrupted Storm Lake High School’s first softball game of the season earlier this week. Storm Lake Superintendent Dr. Stacey Cole said that incident is serving as a reminder that racism is a serious issue nationwide, and that they need to do more to address it. On Monday night, Cole said a car slowed down and started yelling racial slurs at Storm Lake students and fans, including one hateful slur against Hispanics.
IOWA (IRN) – Veterinarians who commit to practicing in rural Iowa can get some student debt relief under a proposal Gov. Kim Reynolds signed into law Wednesday. The Iowa legislature unanimously approved the Rural Veterinary Loan Repayment program before they adjourned on Sunday.
