CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – An immense amount of rain fell in northern Iowa and that water is now traveling through the river systems. Between Friday and Saturday approximately a foot of rain fell in some parts of northern Iowa. That water fell on the watersheds of many of eastern Iowa’s rivers and is leading to big rises. The Turkey and Wapsipinicon Rivers will be cresting through the week.

MONTEZUMA, IA (IRN) – Cristhian Bahena Rivera was sentenced today for the murder of Mollie Tibbetts. Bahena was convicted May 28 for killing Tibbetts in 2018, and faces a mandatory life sentence for first-degree murder.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Twelve Iowans are headed to the Gulf Coast with the American Red Cross to help those hit hard by Hurricane Ida. The dangerous Category 4 hurricane made landfall Sunday near Port Fourchon, Louisiana, with winds of 150 mph.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A security guard fired a warning shot into the air just before closing time at The Firm, a bar in the Court Avenue Entertainment Zone in Des Moines early Sunday morning. Police say a fight broke out in which a person tackled an armed security guard and may have reached for that guard’s gun. A second security guard fired a warning shot in the air to stop the situation. No one was injured.

SMITHLAND, IA (IRN) – Nearly 80 years after he was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Wesley Brown has been laid to rest in the Woodbury County town of Smithland. His final resting place is a site near the graves of his mother and sister who both died long before his remains could be identified through DNA testing. Brown died at age 25 aboard the USS Oklahoma during the Dec. 7, 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
