IOWA – There will be no significant break between winter storm systems this week. According to the National Weather Service, confidence is increasing that most of Iowa will be impacted by another round of snowfall and strong winds late Thursday into most of the day Friday. Many Iowans received 8-12″ of snowfall Monday and Tuesday, and many forecasts indicate another 5-10″ of lighter, fluffier snow could fall heading into the weekend, which will be coupled with strong winds up to 40 MPH. This will be followed up by frigid temperatures, with wind chills between 20 and 40 degrees below zero possible starting Sunday and continuing through Tuesday. FORT DODGE – Fort Dodge police are searching for a person of interest in relation to a possible murder. The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is helping officers find 37 year old David S. Dayton. He is wanted on parole violation out of Pocahontas County as well. Police have potentially connected Dayton to the shooting death of Ryan Andrews on December 29th. WEST DES MOINES – A Minnesota man is accused of attempted murder in West Des Moines. KCCI-TV reports West Des Moines Police officers performed a search and arrested 22-year-old Jamal Jarbah. He’s charged with attempted murder and first degree robbery related to a December 19th incident. IOWA – There’s a growing feeling that Iowans will no longer get to come and go to a long-standing convenience store chain, at least in name only. The Des Moines Register reports following an acquisition of the Kum & Go by Maverik, the industry believes the name will be phased out by 2025 at over 400 locations. Sources to the newspaper indicate they are concerned by the inadvertent double entendre of the Kum & Go name.

IOWA – Several crashes were reported along interstate 80 as some Iowa communities received more than a foot of snow Tuesday. The highway was posted with travel not advised by the Iowa DOT from east of Des Moines to near the quad cities for most of the day due to multiple collisions, including one involving two Iowa State Patrol troopers. A winter storm blasted many in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, and other southern and eastern Iowa communities with 12-15″ of snowfall. Additional chances for snow return this week, according to the National Weather Service, especially in the southeast half of the state on Friday, before extreme cold settles in over the weekend. DES MOINES – Governor Kim Reynolds kicked off the 2024 Iowa Legislative session with her annual condition of the state address Tuesday night. This was the 7th time Reynolds addressed lawmakers and the state to set the agenda for the next three and a half months in the capital. Reynolds called for teacher salary increases, deeper income tax cuts, and extended family care programs. DES MOINES – Presidential candidates weren’t immune to the impact of this week’s winter storm. KCCI-TV reports Vivek Ramaswamy found himself stuck in the snow following a campaign event in Northwest Iowa. The entrepreneur running in Monday’s Iowa caucus said a resident helped his vehicle out of a ditch. AMES – A blanket of snow didn’t stop the Iowa State Cyclones from a major basketball upset at Hilton Coliseum late Tuesday. The home team knocked off No. 2 in the nation Houston in a Big 12 showdown with a 57-53 victory. Freshman Milan Momcilovic hit the game winning jumper with less than a minute remaining after ISU led the majority of the game.

IOWA – A widespread winter storm will likely have travel impacts through Wednesday morning. According to the National Weather Service, some locations in the state are expected to receive more than a foot of wet, heavy snow by day’s end. Winds up to 40 MPH are expected throughout Iowa through Wednesday morning. PERRY – The parents of the 17 year old who shot and killed a sixth grader at Perry High School have released a statement. Raccoon Valley Radio reports Jack and Erin Butler did not know the intentions of their son Dylan as they dropped him off for school on January 4th. Both are thankful to the grace shown by the community so far in the aftermath of the tragic shooting. DES MOINES – Governor Kim Reynolds will give her annual condition of the state address tonight as the 2024 Legislative Session begins. The speech that includes her priorities for 2024 starts at 6 p.m. in the Iowa Statehouse. DES MOINES – Des Moines now officially has their first ever female mayor. The Des Moines Register reports the newly elected leader of Iowa’s largest city Connie Boesen was formally sworn in Monday night in front of a standing room only crowd. Boesen edged out fellow councilmember Josh Mandelbaum in a fall campaign. She replaces Des Moines longest serving mayor, Frank Cownie.

IOWA – A widespread winter storm is expected to impact most of Iowa through Tuesday evening. The vast majority of the state is under a winter storm warning during that time, according to the National Weather Service. Widespread snowfall between 6-9″ is expected, with higher totals possible mainly in the southeast half of the state. Travel will be hazardous through Wednesday morning in most locations. WINTERSET – A Winterset man died in a single vehicle crash in Madison County. The Iowa State Patrol reports a cargo truck driven by 41 year old David Lee Blair left a roadway and rolled over Sunday evening. Blair was not wearing a seatbelt and died from his injuries. This is the first fatal crash in Iowa of 2024 after 377 in 2023, which was well above the five year average. PERRY – The Perry community continues to mourn the loss of a sixth grade student killed in a shooting at the school district’s high school Thursday morning. Eleven-year-old Ahmir Jolliff died from injuries sustained in an attack by 17 year old Dylan Butler. Six others were injured. Funeral services are being held Thursday, with a visitation most of the day Wednesday. Classes remain closed in Perry for most of this week, according to Raccoon Valley Radio. DES MOINES – Governor Kim Reynolds will give her annual condition of the state address this week as the 2024 Legislative Session begins. The governor will lay our her priorities for year two of the 90th general assembly, with a near supermajority of Republicans likely to back most of those proposals. The speech begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Iowa Statehouse.

PERRY – The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has released the name of the deceased victim from Thursday’s shooting at Perry High School. Eleven-year-old Ahmir Jolliff died as a result of three gunshot wounds, fired by 17-year-old Dylan Butler. The high school student killed himself after attacking seven other people Thursday morning. Perry Community School District classes are all cancelled through at least Thursday. WEST DES MOINES – A West Des Moines teenager has been charged with threat of terrorism. KCCI-TV reports that just hours after the deadly shooting in Perry, 18-year-old Lakeeve Fort is accused of asking whether or not he should shoot up a school. Fort told police he had posted a Snapchat memory from a year ago. The FBI assisted West Des Moines police in the arrest. IOWA – Chances are increasing for the first winter storm of 2024 and the season starting Monday across most of the state. According to the National Weather Service, the vast majority of Iowans should see at least two inches of snow, and many pockets of the state could see up to half a foot by Tuesday evening. Travel impacts could also be worsened by anticipated mixed precipitation in some communities. IOWA CITY – In the same week she hit a memorable game winning shot as time expired against Michigan State, Caitlin Clark continues to make history. The Iowa Hawkeyes standout recorded her 8th career triple double with at least 25 points scored against Rutgers, according to the Sporting News. Nobody else in the history of NCAA men’s or women’s basketball has more than three such performances.
