BUCHANNAN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a motor vehicle accident south of Hazleton this morning. The driver of a loaded semi lost control on the icy roadway and broke through a guardrail on a bridge, going over the side and coming to rest in the water below. The driver was assisted out of his vehicle and sustained only minor injuries. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The end of 2022 was met with disappointment for the Iowa State Patrol. Once again, more than 300 people died on Iowa roads over the course of the year. State leaders had hoped to keep fatalities under 300 last year, but 338 people died. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Cedar Rapids police said one person was taken to the hospital Monday night after a “weapons incident.” No other information has been released. IOWA (IRN) – Among the new laws going into effect in 2023 in Iowa is a change in the state’s “bottle bill.” Iowa grocery and convenience stores no longer have to accept customers’ empty cans or bottles. The new law also raises the handling fee for redemption centers to three cents per container. Previously, they were one cent. CEDAR RAPIDS and IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Both Cedar Rapids and Iowa City earned perfect scores for the Human Rights Campaign’s annual rating of U.S. cities for their inclusion of LGBTQ people. The cities are within a group of 120 cities nationwide to earn a perfect score of 100 on the Municipal Equality Index. The rating is calculated using factors such as non-discrimination laws, leadership on LGBTQ+ equality, law enforcement, municipal services and municipality as an employer.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – One man is dead and two men were injured after a shooting in Des Moines yesterday. Responding to a call of shots fired, police found an 18-year-old man with a critical gunshot injury. Life-saving measures were initiated, and the man was transported to a local hospital, where he died. Two other men were injured. Police say an argument preceded the shooting, and a handgun was fired in self-defense. Multiple firearms were recovered at the scene. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – Two people were shot outside a downtown strip club in Waterloo. Waterloo Police were called to Flirts Gentlemen’s Club just after midnight on Saturday. Officials said the shootings occurred on the street after a large fight broke out and that both people had non-life-threatening injuries but were taken to the hospital. IOWA (IRN) – An Ice Storm Warning is now in place for Northern Iowa today, while thunderstorms will be possible in Des Moines tonight. Beginning at 6 PM Monday and continuing until 6 PM Tuesday, extremely hazardous and dangerous travel should be expected along and north of Highway 20. Freezing rain will create dangerous accumulations of ice, potentially damaging trees and powerlines. NASHVILLE, TN (IRN) – Joe Labas threw for 139 yards and a touchdown in his first start and the Iowa Hawkeyes posted the first shutout in the Music City Bowl’s 24 years by beating Kentucky 21-0 Saturday. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz also capped his 24th season by matching the late Joe Paterno for the most bowl victories among Big Ten coaches with his 10th.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Cedar Rapids Police responded to a report of a body in the Cedar River. Emergency crews were dispatched to an area of the Cedar River near Bertram, where hunters reported finding the body. A rescue/recovery team located and retrieved the remains. Identification of the body is pending. CENTERVILLE, IA (IRN) – Flames ripped through a former southern Iowa restaurant early Friday morning. Crews were called to the former Manhattan Steakhouse on Highway 5, just after 3 a.m. The caller reported an explosion and flames shooting through the roof. The building is a total loss. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller has finished his last day in office. After ten terms, he is the longest-serving state attorney general in the history of the United States. Republican Brenna Bird narrowly defeated Miller in November. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A child was rushed to the hospital after accidentally falling into a hotel pool in Des Moines Friday night. Hotel staff members say the child looked OK.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A one-year-old dog was left tied to a pole outside the Des Moines International Airport, according to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa. The ARL said the incident happened Thursday. The organization said some airline workers reported the dog was unable to board a flight home with her owner because the owner did not have a kennel. The airline workers told the ARL the dog’s owner left the airport with the pet, but returned alone and boarded their flight. The dog, who the ARL has dubbed “Allie,” was later found tied up outside the airport. Allie is now under the care of the ARL. Police are investigating the incident. GRINNELL, IA (IRN) – Grinnell Police are investigating a shooting that sent one person to the hospital early Thursday morning. Officers responded to reports of shots fired around 1:40 a.m., and when they arrived, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a nearby hospital and is in stable condition. According to police, a verbal argument broke out among several adults. The argument eventually turned physical, and a handgun was drawn and fired. STORY COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Part of Highway 30 near Nevada was blocked off on Thursday after a deadly crash involving a wrong-way driver. The Story County Sheriff’s Office says a pickup truck was driving west in the eastbound lanes when it struck a utility van head-on. Both drivers died at the scene. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – The Iowa City Water Division says that no harmful contaminants were detected in the Iowa River after the explosion at the C6-Zero plant in Marengo. The analysis was to see if any products like gas or diesel fuel were found in the water that might be a public health hazard. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Caitlin Clark scored 24 points, McKenna Warnock added 19, and No. 12 Iowa defeated Purdue 83-68 on Thursday night. Monika Czinano added 12 points to surpass 2,000 for her career, reaching that milestone for the Hawkeyes (11-3, 3-0 Big Ten Conference) one game after Clark did. In not-so-good news, the Hawkeye men’s team was pounded 66-50 at Nebraska.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A material witness in the homicide of a Des Moines Public Schools employee has been found dead. On Dec. 12, 51-year-old Natasha Lue Jean Williams was found dead in her home by officers who were called there for a welfare check. Her death is being investigated as a homicide. On Dec. 16, a material witness warrant was issued for 54-year-old Scott Lowery. Police believe Lowery had critical information that would move the case forward. Lowery was found dead on Dec. 26 in a garage. His death is being investigated as a suicide. A handgun was recovered at the scene. MARSHALLTOWN, IA (IRN) – A woman has been arrested for allegedly lighting a house on fire earlier this year. According to the Marshalltown Fire Department, Kristi Franklin, 64, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with second-degree arson. SIOUX CITY, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Transportation says roads were a little safer in 2022 compared to last year but still far deadlier than they’d hoped for. With just three days to go in 2022, 335 people died on Iowa roads this year. That’s down from 348 in 2021 but still five more than the five-year average. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – JUUL Labs Inc. has agreed to pay $5 million over the span of four years, as well as revamp its advertising, in a settlement with Iowa to resolve potential violations of Iowa’s Deceptive Trade Practices Act. In a press release, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller said, “This agreement strikes a balance in truthful advertising and promotions of JUUL devices and pods.”
