WASHINGTON, D. C. (IRN) – Doug Jensen, the Des Moines man convicted in the January 6th Capitol riots and insurrection, has been sentenced to five years in prison. The federal judge slammed Jensen for his “lack of remorse and for emboldening attack on Officer Eugene Goodman” on the day of the riots. Jensen was found guilty on all counts in September. WASHINGTON, D.C. (IRN) – A federal judge ruled that Salvador Sandoval of Ankeny was guilty of all 12 counts for his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and insurrection. Sandoval was found guilty of six misdemeanors and six felonies, including assaulting, resisting or impeding four police officers while inside the Capitol that day. He faces over 20 years in prison. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines police have made an arrest in connection with a deadly crash on Fleur Drive on Tuesday. Thirty-five-year-old Robert Miller III has been arrested on multiple charges, including homicide by vehicle, reckless driving, drag racing and excessive speed. A four-year-old was killed. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – An arrest has been made in relation to a house fire in September that injured a firefighter and a man who lived at the home. Jesse James of Iowa City has been charged with second-degree arson for the fire. At the scene, emergency responders found a man found in the front yard, suffering from burns and wounds sustained in the fire. In the process of fighting the fire, one firefighter was injured when ceiling materials gave way and fell on him. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – A 39-year-old woman was killed by a car Tuesday in Davenport. She is one of at least 44 Scott County pedestrians hit by cars this year. Three pedestrians have died in Scott County in 2022. Another seven have been seriously injured. All others suffered minor injuries. Overall, pedestrian fatalities are up across the nation, accounting for 17% of all traffic deaths.

MARENGO, IA (IRN) – Details have been released about the efforts that were needed to fight the biofuels facility fire at C6-Zero in Marengo a week ago. Iowa County Emergency Management reports at least 78 agencies responded to the explosion. That includes more than two dozen fire departments, and up to $80,000 in costs for the Marengo Fire Department alone. Crews used more than two million gallons of water and 3,500 gallons of foam during the 17-hour fight. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – One child has died after a three-vehicle crash that may have been caused by a street race in Des Moines on Tuesday. Police say a Genesis sedan driven by a 35-year-old man appears to have crossed over the median and entered the southbound traffic lanes. The sedan first crashed into a Honda Accord driven by a 38-year-old woman. The Accord had two passengers, an 8-year-old boy, and a 4-year-old boy. Next, the sedan crashed into a Chevrolet Equinox driven by a 40-year-old woman. The 4-year-old was killed. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A man died after a head-on crash in Cedar Rapids Wednesday morning. A utility truck collided head-on with an SUV. The driver of the SUV was killed. WASHINGTON, D.C (IRN) – As mother and son Deborah Sandoval and Salvador Sandoval were set to start a bench trial in a Washington courtroom for their involvement in the Jan. 6 riot and insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, Deborah Sandoval pleaded guilty to a single count. That single charge carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison, supervised release of no more than a year, and up to a $100,000 fine and restitution. Her son, Salvador, continued on to trial Wednesday. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – The city of Dubuque plans to help address food deserts by putting in an indoor hydroponics system. That’s where produce can be grown in water instead of soil, making it accessible year-round.

CHICKASAW COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A Minnesota man died Monday while trying to load a construction vehicle onto a flatbed truck in northeast Iowa. The accident happened just before noon in Chickasaw County. Joseph Gathje, 21, was working to load the vehicle when it rolled off the trailer into the ditch and pinned him. Gathje was pronounced dead at the scene. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Governor Kim Reynolds is banning TikTok from all state-owned devices effective immediately. The ban also prohibits state agencies from subscribing to or owning a TikTok account. Reynolds says the app’s ties to the Chinese government are a national security threat. WASHINGTON, D.C. (IRN) – U.S. Senator Joni Ernst, a Republican from Red Oak, said that she stands behind her vote to support the federal Respect for Marriage Act, despite censures for her actions by seven Iowa GOP county parties. Eleven other Republican senators supported the bipartisan legislation. Iowa’s other U.S. senator, Republican Chuck Grassley of New Hartford, voted against it. Those county parties included Des Moines, Guthrie, Ida, Mahaska, Pocahontas, Van Buren, and Wright. COLESBURG, IA (IRN) – A 14-year-old from Colesburg is set to receive one of the 2022 Governor’s Lifesaving Awards for his quick action after a UTV accident in Delaware County earlier this year. Brody Oberbroeckling was outside in his yard when he saw three girls go by on a UTV. A few minutes later, he heard screaming. He ran to where the UTV had crashed, pinning one of the girls underneath. Brody was able to hold up the side of the UTV while others rescued the girl.

BOONE, IA (IRN) – An Ogden man is dead after crashing into the back of a tractor-trailer. It happened Monday around 5:30 p.m., just east of Boone on Highway 30. According to the Iowa State Patrol, 34-year-old Brian Allen Lage, of Ogden, was driving a pickup truck when he hit the back of a tractor-trailer driven by 63-year-old Edward B. Adams, of Pleasant Hill. Adams was slowing to turn left from Highway 30 westbound to a private field drive at the time of the crash. Lage was transported to the hospital, where he died. The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Polk County judge has again ruled against Governor Kim Reynolds and the “Fetal Heartbeat Bill” she signed into law four years ago, but which has never been allowed to take effect. The law would make abortions illegal after a heartbeat, or electrical impulses from the heart, were detected in an embryo. This could be as soon as six weeks after a woman becomes pregnant and before she knew she was pregnant. WASHINGTON, D.C. (IRN) – Two central Iowans will go on trial this week for charges tied to the insurrection and attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021. The mother-son duo, Deborah and Salvador Sandoval Jr., opted to have a bench trial rather than face a jury earlier this year. They both face multiple charges, including obstruction of an official proceeding. Salvador faces a total of 13 charges, including assaulting a peace officer. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines police are conducting a homicide investigation after finding a deceased woman at a home on Monday. Police officers conducted a requested welfare check on two people who live at the home and found the woman. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa is expected to receive $70 million as part of an agreement with CVS and Walgreens for their role in the opioid crisis. Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller and other attorneys general from across the country announced the finalized agreement on Monday, saying CVS will pay $5 billion and Walgreens will pay $5.7 billion, for a total of $10.7 billion nationally.

CLIVE, IA (IRN) – A Clive man is accused of stalking after allegedly placing Air Tags on a woman’s car. Court documents say Carl Shawver used Apple Air Tags to keep track of a woman he referred to as his wife, even though the two never had a relationship. MARENGO, Iowa (KCRG) – The Marengo Fire Department is taking stock after the explosion at a shingle recycling plant Thursday that injured at least 10 people. All of their gear has oil stains they have been unable to remove, and likely contains carcingens. The gear will cost $80,000 to replace. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A senior officer with the Des Moines Police Department was arrested early Sunday morning for allegedly operating a vehicle while under the influence. Angel Danniel Perez Aguilar, 27, a five year veteran of the police force, was charged with operating while under the influence first offense and possession or carrying of dangerous weapons while under the influence. ALLIANCE, OH – Wartburg College’s run to the Division III football championship was stopped on Saturday by Mount Union in a back-and-forth semifinal game decided in the final minute. The Purple Raiders scored a touchdown with 31 seconds left in the game to go ahead, holding on to a 34-31 victory over the Knights.
