DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines police are investigating a shooting and a stabbing downtown that left two people seriously hurt. Officers were called to Third Street and Court Avenue just before 2 a.m. Friday. A fight broke out and one person was stabbed while another person retrieved a gun from a nearby car and shot another person. Both victims are in critical condition. MUSCATINE, IA (IRN) – Following an investigation into a break-in and vandalism of Madison Elementary School, Muscatine Police have arrested and charged six teenagers. On August 5th, emergency crews responded to a report of a fire alarm at the school. Upon arrival, officers observed thousands of dollars of damage due to vandalism. POCAHONTAS, IA (IRN) – Hundreds of people in a small northwest Iowa town want to get rid of their school superintendent. More than 230 Pocahontas residents have signed a petition urging the Pocahontas Area Community School District to fire Superintendent Joe Kramer. Petition organizers say they are concerned about the staff turnover rate, alleged retaliation, and a hostile work environment. There have been nearly 80 resignations in the district since March of 2019. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Blank Park Zoo announced the arrival of a male giraffe calf Friday afternoon. The calf arrived on Tuesday to mother Zola, 6, and father Jakobi, 17. The calf is 5 foot 5 inches and weighs 107 lbs. Staff say they are cautiously optimistic the calf is healthy because he passed all the major milestones for a newborn, which include quickly learning to stand, walk, and nurse from mom.

MARION, IA (IRN) – A Marion man was arrested after allegedly forcing a 14-year-old into his garage with the intent to sexually abuse her. 43-year-old Nicholas Roberts allegedly attempted to entice a 14-year-old girl into his garage to have sex with him. When she refused, he reportedly grabbed her and pulled her into his garage. He then exposed himself and attempted to assault her. The victim was able to get out of the garage and find a neighbor for help. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – Much of Dubuque is without drinkable water. A boil advisory was issued for 15,600 homes and businesses yesterday. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources have confirmed that statewide average precipitation has been below the mark for the 5th month in a row. Iowa’s August precipitation was 3.53 inches which was 0.6 inches below normal for the month. Drought conditions have made slight improvements in the southwest and central part of the state, but they have worsened in southeast Iowa over the last month. IOWA CITY (IRN) – The University of Iowa was the only regents university in the state to gain students this year over year over last, adding 111 students for a total 2022 enrollment of 31,317. The growth can be attributed in part to its freshman class of 5,178 students — the third-most in the university’s history. ISU and UNI are losing students, but both show increased numbers in their freshman classes.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The sentencing for a sex trafficked teen who killed her alleged rapist in Des Moines has been pushed back until next week. Pieper Lewis, 17, was charged last year with killing Zachary Brooks when she was 15. Brooks, 37, allegedly raped Lewis multiple times in the weeks leading up to his death, which was on June 1, 2020. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The driver who killed an East High School student in a hit-and-run crash this spring will not serve time in prison. Ema Cardenas, 14, was struck and killed on April 28 as she walked home from East High School. Police located the vehicle involved at a home nearby, but it was not until the following day that the driver, Terra Flipping, 38, turned herself in. She received probation over the objections of the victim’s family. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A 23-year-old is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder after an officer-involved shooting took place in Cedar Rapids in late July. On July 30, during a traffic stop, two officers fired 12 shots at 23-year-old Brandon Nelson, hitting him three times. The Linn County Attorney conducted a legal review and concluded the use of force was “necessary” after Nelson aimed a shotgun at both officers and fired at one of them. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Police say someone was shot on the south side of Des Moines overnight. A man is in the hospital with a gunshot wound to the arm. He is expected to survive. The woman who allegedly shot him was detained. IOWA (IRN) – An Iowa corrections officer and five other law enforcement officers in Iowa are among 330 people in the state listed as a member of the Oath Keepers, a far-right extremist group that’s accused of playing a role in the January 6th, 2021 Capitol riots. Data was published by the Anti-Defamation League Center on Extremism on Tuesday.

BOONE COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The death of a K9 is under investigation in Boone County. The K9, named Bear, died last week. The DCI says the Boone County sheriff requested the state investigate the dog’s death. OSAGE, IA (IRN) – An Osage man charged with killing a woman he had just met and putting her head on a stick in a park is pleading not guilty. 22-year-old Nathan Gilmore is charged with killing Angela Bradbury in 2021. During a search of Gilmore’s residence, police found a whiteboard in his living room with GPS coordinates of where the skull was found. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A criminal complaint against one of two men charged in the mass shooting at Taboo nightclub in Cedar Rapids says video shows him fatally shooting a man at point blank range. Dimione Walker is charged with first-degree murder and weapons charges in connection to the April 10th shooting that killed three people and wounded 9 others. Surveillance video at the club shows Walker fired 8 shots at 25-year-old Michael Valentine at point-blank range with a handgun. Valentine died of six gunshot wounds. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Drake Public Safety is trying to find who scratched a racist slur into the wall of a campus building. It was quickly removed from a wall panel in an elevator. DPS is asking students to contact them if they know who’s responsible. OCALA, FL (IRN) – Sterling Lord, the literary agent who worked for years to find a publisher for Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” has died. He had just turned 102. He’s an Iowa native who attended Grinnell College and wrote about sports for the Des Moines Register. He died Saturday in a nursing home in Ocala, Florida.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A 23-year-old woman has died from a gunshot injury, according to Des Moines police. Two people have been arrested in connection with the homicide. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – Davenport police arrested a man after being pursued by multiple police departments. Rock Island police responded to a report of a man armed with a handgun. He fled in a vehicle over the Centennial Bridge into Davenport, and officers saw him throw a gun into the river. 24-year-old Deveil Westerfield was arrested by police. He’s a convicted felon and prohibited from having firearms. HAMPTON, IA (IRN) – A derailed train spilled asphalt into a creek early Monday morning in the northern Iowa town of Hampton. At about 3:30 a.m., 44 Union Pacific train cars derailed on a bridge over a creek in Hampton. No one was injured and the cause of the train derailment is under investigation. CHARITON, IA (IRN) – The Humane Society of Lucas County announced it will be closing its doors. The decision was made due to expensive changes that are needed to comply with state regulations, low funding, and not enough volunteer staff. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Ape Initiative on Des Moines’ southeast side was vandalized twice in one week. It’s the world’s only research center dedicated to studying bonobo apes. The bonobos were safe and secure during the incident.
