CERRO GORDO COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A Mason City man is dead following a head-on crash in Cerro Gordo County late Monday night. A Nissan Altima driven by 58-year-old Timothy Hoy of Charles City was traveling eastbound when it crossed the center line and hit a Pontiac G5 head-on. The Pontiac’s driver, 41-year-old Stephen Miles, was pronounced dead at the scene. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A woman was seriously injured Tuesday morning in a stabbing at a Quick Trip on the southeast side of Des Moines. The victim and the suspect knew each other and met at the store. An argument broke out and the man allegedly stabbed the woman in the abdomen. KEYSTONE, IA (IRN) – Ten families in Keystone must get rid of their family dogs after being told to do so by the Benton County Sheriff’s Office. The dogs are pit bulls or look like pit bulls. The dog owners were told they have 10 days to find new homes for their pets. Benton County has an ordinance prohibiting dangerous animals. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Iowa senior linebacker Jack Campbell has been named the preseason Big Ten defensive player of the year. Campbell (6-5, 246 pounds) was a second-team All-American in 2021.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – The Linn County Sheriff’s office said a juvenile driver faces charges in juvenile court after a six-minute, high speed car chase on Monday night. A deputy tried to a stop the car for speeding just before 11 p.m. The sheriff’s office said the car drove off, and reached speeds of more than 100 mph before it eventually stopped. A boy was driving, and a girl was a passenger. Deputies detained both of them before releasing them to their parents. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Des Moines man seen at the front of the pack during the insurrection at the United States Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, wants his September trial moved back. A motion filed Monday by his attorney wants the September 19 trial moved back to 2023. His attorney says Jensen is prepared to waive his time under the Speedy Trial Act until then to “obtain a less politically charged jury pool.” DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – An eight-year-old child suffered serious facial injuries after falling to the ground from a third-floor apartment in Des Moines on Monday. Police say it appears the fall was an accident. CEDAR COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A judge declared a mistrial in the federal case of a former state trooper charged with using unreasonable force during a traffic stop. Prosecutors charged Robert James Smith after a video showed him hitting and tackling a motorcyclist during a traffic stop in Cedar County in 2017. Smith later resigned. The state of Iowa paid $225,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by the motorcyclist. There’s no word from prosecutors if they plan to retry Smith. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – People in Iowa City are worried about how many deer are in town. The city is doing something about that rising population, but not everyone can agree on that solution. A study in 2018 showed the deer population in Iowa City had tripled eight years after ending the deer management program in 2010. An urban hunting program is in place, set to run through 2024. City leaders say there needs to be more interest from private property owners and hunters.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Hot air balloons filled the skies over Des Moines this morning ahead of the National Balloon Classic in Indianola this weekend. However, the planned flights did not go without a hitch. One balloon pilot made an emergency landing in a backyard. No one was injured. CERRO GORDO COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A crash in Cerro Gordo County on Friday killed two people and injured another. The driver lost control of the vehicle and rolled. The driver and a passenger were killed. Another passenger was life-flighted to the hospital. CENTRAL CITY, IA (IRN) – A Coralville man is behind bars after stabbing a man in the chest on Saturday in Central City. The victim is also on a police hold for a warrant for escape and violation of probation. WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A road bucking due to extreme heat shut down a portion of Interstate 80 in West Des Moines on Saturday. The road buckle occurred westbound on I-80 near the Jordan Creek Parkway entrance ramp. The westbound lanes were shut down for several hours while law enforcement and Iowa DOT repaired the road. NEWTON, IA (IRN) – Pato O’Ward is the winner of Sunday’s Hy-Vee Salute to Farmers 300 race at the Iowa Speedway. O’Ward finished second in Saturday’s race, the Hy-Veedeals.com 250. Josef Newgarden, the winner of Saturday’s race, led for the majority of Sunday’s race and looked like he was headed for a weekend sweep until he spun out and crashed on lap 236.

MAQUOKETA, IA (IRN) – Four people are dead in what investigators say was a triple homicide at Maquoketa Caves State Park Campground yesterday. The DCI says 23-year-old Anthony Sherwin, of La Vista, Nebraska, killed three people before shooting himself. The victims are 42-year-old Tyler Schmidt, 42-year-old Sarah Schmidt and 6-year-old Lula Schmidt. The family was from Cedar Falls. Investigators say they were staying in a tent during their visit to the park. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Democrat challenging Senator Chuck Grassley for his Senate seat is now challenging him to a series of debates. Michael Franken said he wants to hold four debates with Grassley before the general election in November, with one debate being held in each congressional district. Senator Grassley’s campaign informally accepted the challenge of debates but not the specific number or locations. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – It’s become slightly more difficult to find a place to swim in Des Moines this year. The Des Moines Parks and Recreation does not have enough lifeguards to fully staff all five of its pools. As a result, the department has closed one pool every week to spread the staff they have around. CARROLL, IA (IRN) – Van Meter has done it again. The Bulldogs blanked ELC 10-0 in 6 innings Friday to win the 2A State Championship at Merchants Park in Carroll. Van Meter is now just the fourth team ever to win four straight state titles.

DES MOINES, IA IRN) – Iowa’s casinos are seeing record profits. The state reports for this fiscal year, table games and slot machines have taken in more than $1.7 billion in gross revenue. Sports betting brought in another $139 million. More people are visiting Iowa’s casinos, too. They report nearly 18 million admissions so far this year. That’s up more than 1 million from last year. STATE CENTER, IA (IRN) – A State Center man has died after a fire inside a mobile home. Authorities arrived on scene and found 31-year-old Wyatt Michael Varnum of State Center inside the mobile home. He received medical attention on scene but was later pronounced dead. Authorities haven’t confirmed what caused the fire. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Police in Des Moines have arrested one of the men they say is responsible for the terrifying robbery of a metro woman. The incident happened early Tuesday morning after the victim won two jackpots at the Prairie Meadows casino totaling more than $10,000. The woman was driving home when her car was forced off the road by two vehicles. Police said 30-year-old Timothy Spencer, of Berwick, was driving one of the vehicles. Spencer had a handgun when he exited the vehicle, and struck the driver-side window of the victim’s vehicle, shattering it. He then opened the door, grabbed the victim’s purse, and fled. MARION, IA (IRN) – Marion Police said several blocks near downtown Marion were vandalized early Thursday morning. Businesses, houses, and public property were spray painted, some with messages of hate, swastikas, and white supremacy. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 2.6% in June. The U.S. unemployment rate remained at 3.6%.
