FORT DODGE – An arrest has been made in connection to a Tuesday morning shooting in Fort Dodge. WHO-13 reports 38-year-old Rolman H. Recinos has been charged with first degree murder. The department responded to shots fired early Tuesday morning. Recinos also faces a count of trafficking stolen weapons.BREMER COUNTY – The motorcyclist involved in a fatal crash in northeastern Iowa has been identified. KCRG-TV reports 44-year-old Robert Detmering III of Osage was traveling on Highway 218 and crossed the median, striking a jeep in the other lane. Determing died at the scene, according to the Iowa State Patrol.DES MOINES – A longtime member of the Polk County Board of Supervisors announced her retirement. The Des Moines Register reports Angela Connolly will not run for re-election following 25 years serving on the state’s largest county board. Connolly represents the fifth district of Polk County, which largely covers the northern and eastern portions of Des Moines. SIOUX CITY – One game in, an Iowa High School football team has seen its season end. KCCI-TV reports Siouxland Christian in eight-player football has cancelled the remainder of its varsity games over safety concerns. The school opened last week against Coon Rapids-Bayard in a 60-0 loss and forfeited the game at halftime.

WASHINGTON D.C. – Senator Joni Ernst officially announced her decision not to run for a third term in the U.S. Senate. The Des Moines Register reports Ernst had considered a run, but ultimately decided against it, opening the seat to a contested primary for both parties. Current U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson announced her intention to run for the soon-to-be vacant seat. This opens a primary challenge for the U.S. House second district, which Hinson has held since 2020. OSKALOOSA – The former Keokuk County Sheriff’s Office deputy accused child endangerment has been found guilty on all counts. KCCI-TV reports David Heady was charged 13 times with child endangerment, as he was the adult passenger on a hayrack ride that crashed in October 2023. Both Heady and Daniel Brubaker were both charged in the incident, as investigators testified both were intoxicated prior to the crash. Several children were injured and broke bones in the incident. Heady will be sentenced on October 17th at the Keokuk County Courthouse. WINTERSET – Independent Michele Brant was sworn as the Madison County Auditor following a victory in a special election last week. WHO-13 reports Brant took her oath Tuesday night at a special session of the Board of Supervisors. She takes control of an office that had multiple people in the role this year due to the resignation of Teri Kaczinski. She was under investigation by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation for potential misconduct in office, but no charges were filed. This led to the appointment of Matthew Schwartz, which was challenged by citizens and turned into a special election.

DES MOINES – The Iowa Supreme Court has announced its docket of special sessions this fall. WHO-12 reports hearings will take place at Bettendorf High School on September 16th, October 7th at the Iowa State Capitol, and October 24th at the University of Iowa. Additional spring sessions are slated at Drake Law School and Fairfield High School. Since 2011, the Iowa Supreme Court has heard oral arguments in 39 Iowa communities. The tradition stemmed from Former Chief Justice Mark Cady. OSKALOOSA – Closing arguments are coming soon in the trial of a former Keokuk County Sheriff’s Deputy implicated in a hayrack ride crash that injured dozens of children. KCCI-TV reports David Heady faces 13 counts of child endangerment following a 2023 incident. The former deputy was the passenger in a truck pulling a trailer full of children, and he’s accused of riding with Daniel Brubaker, both of whom were intoxicated while traveling well over 30 MPH before veering into a ditch. Some of the children suffered significant injuries. The trial is taking place in Mahaska County. IOWA – Another burst of unseasonably cool air is set to settle into the state later this week. According to the National Weather Service, daytime highs will drop into the upper 50s to mid 60s on Thursday. That’s nearly 20 degrees below normal for early September. Some isolated locations in the state received 3-5 inches of rain over the holiday weekend, especially near Ames and Fort Dodge, but dry conditions are otherwise dominating the short to medium range forecast.

COUNCIL BLUFFS – A Missouri man has died following an officer-involved shooting in western Iowa. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation reports an Iowa State Patrol Trooper initiated a traffic stop of a vehicle on Interstate 29 Wednesday evening. A male subject, later identified as 48-year-old Michael Broyles of Battlefield, Missouri, is accused of brandishing a firearm and then fleeing. A short pursuit ensued, and at its conclusion, Broyles exited his vehicle with a firearm and allegedly fired at the responding officers. The officers returned fire, striking Broyles, who was later pronounced dead from his injuries. Police involved were uninjured and have been placed on critical incident leave. COUNCIL BLUFFS – A Council Bluffs man was sentenced to 180 months in federal prison for receipt of child pornography and possession of a firearm as felon. According to public court documents, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a CyberTip that an account, later determined to be associated with 55-year-old David Michael Morse received and uploaded an image containing child sexual abuse material. During a search of Morse’s Council Bluffs residence, law enforcement seized Morse’s electronics, including a cellular phone, and firearms.IOWA – The Iowa Public Broadcasting Board is requesting $3 million from the state government following federal budget reductions approved by Congress. KCCI-TV reports the $3 million would be used to construct new transmitters in Waterloo and Sioux City. The federal cuts had Iowa PBS reduce spending by 20 percent.

WASHINGTON D.C. – Iowa will have a new senator after the 2026 election. CBS News reports Joni Ernst will not seek a third term in Washington D.C. Ernst faced criticism for initial opposition to President Donald Trump’s nomination of Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense and for saying “we are all going to die” in response to a constituent critical of her support of cuts to Medicaid. Current U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson appears to have interest in running in the primary; four Democrats are competing to potentially oppose her. DAVENPORT– A Waterloo man was sentenced to 168 months in federal prison for Attempted Enticement of a Minor to Engage in Illicit Sexual Activities. According to court documents, in October 2023, 47-year-old Gabriel Keith Usher began messaging over the internet with an undercover officer posing as a 15-year-old minor. Within days, Usher professed his love for the minor and suggested sexual acts they could engage in. In October 2024, Usher was sentenced in Black Hawk County, Iowa to five years in state prison on unrelated state charges of enticing a minor under age 16 and sexual exploitation of a minor. DES MOINES, Iowa – A Des Moines man and reported member of the Black P Stones criminal street gang was sentenced on this week to 262 months in federal prison for his participation in a conspiracy to distribute fentanyl. According to public court documents, in the spring of 2024, law enforcement learned that 44-year-old Kevin Stanley Harris, Jr., was a high-level fentanyl dealer operating in Des Moines. Following a seven-month investigation, law enforcement confirmed that Harris traveled to and from Chicago to obtain large quantities of fentanyl for redistribution in Des Moines. Harris was arrested on December 18, 2024, the same day thirteen federal search warrants were executed, which resulted in the seizure of approximately 610 grams of heroin/fentanyl mixture.
