AMES, IA (IRN) – A 15-year-old is charged with attempted murder in a Monday shooting in Ames that injured an 18-year-old man. The victim, 18-year-old Ames resident Anthony M. Davis, was taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center. His condition has not been released. On Tuesday, police said they have arrested a 15-year-old boy. He has been charged with attempted murder and has been transported to juvenile detention. IOWA (IRN) – Several people have died in Iowa in separate motorcycle crashes since Saturday. Holly Jo Hegwood, 37, of Knoxville died after losing control and crashing into a pick-up truck Monday in Knoxville. In Adair County, a man died and a woman was hurt after a chain-reaction crash. Jay Thysen and a passenger were on a motorcycle, yielding to another car when a third car rammed into the motorcycle, killing him. Michael Greene, 61, of Winterset, was killed when he struck another motorcycle that was slowing down in front of him. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – Three people died Monday when a semitrailer and another vehicle collided in Waterloo. The driver of the vehicle and two passengers died at the scene. At least four more people died in crashes this weekend in Dubuque, Montgomery, Plymouth and Pottawatomie counties. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – A man was shot in Waterloo on Monday night. Police said the man is in critical condition. There are no arrests so far. CEDAR FALLS, IA (IRN) – 96-year-old Hazel Swanson of Cedar Falls received the Congressional Gold Medal on Monday to recognize her service in the Civil Air Patrol during World War II. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest expression of national appreciation Congress can bestow for distinguished achievements and contributions. Swanson contributed to the nation’s wartime effort during World War II while serving as a cadet in the Civil Air Patrol’s Cedar Falls squadron.

CLIVE, IA (IRN) – A teenager who reportedly approached a group of fourth grade students in Des Moines last week, spoke to them about drugs and threatened them, has been arrested by Clive police. The girl used derogatory language, including racial slurs, to the children and “said she was going to get her boyfriend who was in a gang and had a gun” before she left the park. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – One man is dead and another is hurt after a shooting in Waterloo. Police say gunfire erupted just after 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Two men were raced to nearby hospitals, where one of them died. Police haven’t announced any arrests. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Two people were taken to the hospital due to a fight at the Rotary Riverwalk Park after everyone left the bars early Sunday morning. Des Moines Police say a large crowd gathered across from Wells Fargo arena before the first shots were fired. The kayaker had capsized in the rapids at the low head dam site and lost her paddle. She made her way to a rock ridge in the center of the waterway. Firefighters entered the water in an inflatable water rescue craft to reach the kayaker.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A woman has died and a man was hospitalized after a motorcycle crash near Red Oak Saturday. 66-year-old Wendell Keith Gourley of Stanton was driving a three-wheeled Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound on Highway 34 with 66-year-old Jeannine Schomburg-Gourley as his passenger. Authorities believe the Gourleys were blown from the highway by a powerful gust of crosswind. The impact of the wind pushed the motorcycle into a cable barrier, after which the two were thrown from the vehicle. The Decorah Police Department confirmed reports of a black bear near the Trout Run Access Area. Police said that they and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources were tracking the bear.

FAIRFIELD, IA (IRN) – The Fairfield Community School District placed all of its buildings under lockdown on the last day of school after a man with a gun was possibly seen on one of its campuses. The Fairfield Police Department posted that an “armed man” was possibly spotted at Pence Elementary School around 12:45 p.m. Friday. Police report they arrived at Pence within three minutes, but did not find any suspects matching the description given on an emergency call. WASHINGTON COUNTY, IA (IRN) – An Iowa City man has been sentenced for up to 25 years in prison for selling meth to a confidential source at Riverside Casino in March of last year. A jury convicted Mark Poggenpohl, 38, of delivery of methamphetamine. Poggenpohl was on parole when he sold drugs that day. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The motorcyclist involved in a crash in Des Moines Friday has died. Des Moines police say the driver’s death is the seventh traffic-related fatality of 2022. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is urging boaters to keep their life jackets on this Memorial Day weekend and be ready for chilly water. Water is still cold enough for the onset of hypothermia.

ANKENY, IA (IRN) – Ankeny is now Des Moines’ biggest suburb. It just surpassed West Des Moines after more than doubling its population since 2000. There were 27,000 residents in Ankeny in 2000. There are now 70,000 people calling Ankeny home, making it the sixth-largest city in the state. JOHNSTON, IA (IRN) – As the school year ends, so are the careers of many teachers, with many being frustrated their profession is being attacked. A National Education Association survey shows that 55% of teachers are thinking about leaving the profession. Des Moines schools are reporting nearly 300 teachers are resigning or retiring this summer. Waukee is losing 45 teachers due to resignations. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – The CDC has upgraded Johnson County’s COVID-19 community level status to ‘High’ due to reported cases and hospital admissions. Only two Iowa counties are in the ‘High’ category: Johnson and Jones. A handful of other counties, including Linn, are in ‘Medium’ while most Iowa counties are in ‘Low.’ The CDC recommends people in counties with ‘High’ status wear masks at indoor public places and on public transit. LADORA, IA (IRN) – Iowa County Emergency responders were called to a report of a victim nearly buried by soybeans within a grain bin yesterday. Crews were successful in freeing the victim, who was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. ANKENY, IA (IRN) – Justin Phongsavanh’s journey brought him from Ankeny to the medal podium at the Tokyo Paralympics. Now, his story is streaming for the world to see. Phongsamvanh is featured in the Hulu documentary ‘Heritage Heroes,’ a production which spotlights notable Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Phongsamvanh says, “I’m beyond honored…I feel almost not good enough to be in that film with all of those amazing people.”
