DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – MidAmerican Energy says customers will likely see higher monthly heating bills this winter, attributing the rise to continued high natural gas prices. Impacts will depend on usage, but residential customers can expect their total bill to increase by 46-96 percent. UNION, IA (IRN) – Law enforcement officials in Hardin County are continuing an investigation into a death that they said was a homicide. Osborn Eugene Gavel, 22, of Baxter, Ark., was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Deputies found Steve Reece, 74, inside a bedroom in a residence. Officials believe that Reece died as a result of being struck by Gavel. Gavel and others had been staying with Reece the night before his body was found. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A Muscatine man was convicted Tuesday of second-degree murder for the stabbing death of another man during a party in rural Iowa. Milton Serrano Jr., 22, was originally charged with first-degree murder in the 2020 death of 19-year-old Chantz Stevens, of Wilton. Serrano stabbed Stevens after Serrano was asked to leave a party in Clarence, Iowa. Stevens died at the scene. LAKE CITY, IA (IRN) – A student from South Central Calhoun High School in Lake City was killed in a crash Tuesday. Kaylin Blessington, a junior, was killed in a crash near Auburn on the way to school. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission announced that sports wagering in September was the highest recorded in the state, a little over $210 million. The upcoming months of October and November could be even bigger for sports wagers in the state.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Des Moines Police Department says a woman was randomly kidnapped and robbed by a man with a knife on Sunday night. Police say 42-year-old Eddie Ramos held the woman at knifepoint and forced her to drive to the QuikTrip on Army Post Road. Ramos ordered her to withdraw more than $200 from an ATM and give it to him. He then forced her to drive to a vacant lot where he planned to sexually assault her. The victim got away and ran to officers for help. Ramos is charged with kidnapping, burglary and drug possession. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines rescue crews rescued a man from a manhole Monday. Firefighters say a homeless man lifted up a vent and fell 25 feet into a building’s electrical vault system downtown. He was alert and talking with firefighters before being taken to the hospital. IOWA (IRN) – Iowa Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks is accused of failing to disclose or properly report tens of thousands of dollars in income, according to a complaint filed with the Office of Congressional ethics on Monday. Among the accusations in the filing is that Miller-Meeks falsely claimed to work in Congress the year before she was first elected and she failed to report retirement income. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Two fatal crashes on Interstate 80 over the weekend brings the number of people who have died on Iowa roads so far this year to 263. The Iowa State Patrol says that’s more than last year at this point. AMES, IA (IRN) – Iowa State University’s scholarship athletes will soon have the opportunity to earn up to $6,000 per academic year as financial awards for their performance in the classroom. The Iowa State Athletics Department will debut the Cyclone Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Program in the 2022-23 academic year. The program will give Iowa State scholarship athletes the chance to earn money based on their performance in the classroom each semester.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A child caregiver is under arrest in connection with a baby’s death. Nicole Ghee was caring for a 2-month-old girl when the infant died in April of 2020. Des Moines police believe exposure to drugs may have played a role in the girl’s death. An autopsy showed the baby had meth in her system. MOLINE, Ill (IRN) – John Deere union workers voted down a new contract agreement Sunday. Hundreds of John Deere union workers gathered at the TaxSlayer Center on Sunday in Moline, IL to vote on the new tentative six-year contract. It would have covered more than 10,000 workers at 14 facilities across the United States. Union workers wanted increased wages, pensions, and health care benefits. In this new contract, employee health benefits stayed the same. But there is still no post-retirement health care. Instead, the company offered a bonus. FORT DODGE, IA (IRN) – A 15-year-old girl was shot in the chest during a house party in Fort Dodge Saturday night, and police are asking for witnesses to help identify the shooter. Police say approximately 40 people had been at the party, but they scattered after the shooting. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Former President Donald Trump held his first rally in Iowa since he left office. Thousands of people streamed into the Iowa State Fairgrounds on Saturday to hear former President Donald Trump speak. Trump spent almost 30 minutes of the rally, his first in Iowa since his 2020 campaign, arguing falsely that he had won Arizona, Georgia and Pennsylvania. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Democrats are voicing their disapproval that many of Iowa’s top Republicans leaders appeared with former President Trump at the rally in Des Moines. Iowa Democratic Party Chair Ross Wilburn said: “Iowa Republicans have tied themselves to a man who attacked the foundations of our democracy throughout his time in office. Just nine months ago, he incited a violent mob to attack his own Vice President and threaten the lives of lawmakers who were simply fulfilling their constitutional duty to certify our election. Iowa Republicans must answer for their silence and role in enabling right-wing extremists.” IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Iowa has risen in the AP college football rankings to No. 2, following Georgia as the new No. 1. The Bulldogs’ rise from No. 2 comes a day after No. 1 Alabama was upset at Texas A&M. Iowa is No 2, up one spot after winning a top-five matchup with Penn State. The Hawkeyes have their best ranking since they reached No. 1 in 1985.

WEST UNION, IA (IRN) – A lawsuit filed against an Iowa hospital alleges that a 77-year-old man who was being treated for pneumonia died after the oxygen machine feeding his nasal tube was shut off. David Hackley’s relatives sued Gundersen Health System on Friday over his January 2020 death. They say Hackley had been improving and that the Gunderson Palmer Lutheran Hospital in West Union was making arrangements to discharge him to a skilled nursing home for rehab before his supplemental oxygen was turned off. Iowa will take on Purdue at home next week.

AMES, IA (IRN) – Iowa State men’s basketball coach T.J. Otzelberger announced Xavier Foster is no longer with the program. The announcement about the redshirt freshman from Oskaloosa was released Friday. The specific cause for his removal has not been released. However, in June, search warrants for Foster were filed to obtain his DNA. Court documents show he was accused of sexually assaulting an 18-year-old female in November 2020. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Police are investigating after a shooting Friday night injured two people in Cedar Rapids. They are expected to survive. Investigators said it was a targeted shooting and no arrests have been made. OSCEOLA, IA (IRN) – A school bus driver in Osceola has been placed on administrative leave amid claims of abusive behavior toward two elementary school students. Students on the bus told their parents that the bus driver apparently got upset over a party toy that was making noises. At some point the driver allegedly grabbed the cheeks of a 6-year-old boy. When the boy’s 8-year-old sister came to his defense, the driver allegedly squeezed her cheeks as well. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Former President Donald Trump will be holding a rally this evening at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
