MARSHALLTOWN, IA (IRN) – Rescue crews in Marshalltown couldn’t reach a man inside a burning home in time. They found a 71-year-old man dead inside a house early Sunday morning. Neighbors told firefighters they could hear knocking and screams coming from the home. The flames blocked them from getting inside and they weren’t able to reach the man in time. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A man attempted to abduct a child in Cedar Rapids on Sunday. An adult male, wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a mask, tried to grab a 2-year-old child from the sidewalk. A family member was able to intervene and prevent the child from being taken. The man got into a white car and drove away. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A large crowd was loitering on Court Avenue in Des Moines after the bars closed Sunday morning. While police were clearing the streets, a handgun was taken from a man in the crowd. Another person in the crowd displayed a handgun and took off running. Officers chased him down and arrested him. A crowd began to surround the officers, and they had to call for backup. No one was hurt. NEW YORK, NY (IRN) – A data scientist who was revealed Sunday as the Facebook whistleblower says that whenever there was a conflict between the public good and what benefited the company, Facebook would choose its own interests. Frances Haugen, a native of Iowa City, was identified in a “60 Minutes” interview Sunday as the woman who anonymously filed complaints with federal law enforcement that the company’s own research shows how it magnifies hate and misinformation. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Hawkeyes are now ranked No. 3 of the AP football rankings after beating Maryland 51-14 on Friday.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – One person died Saturday morning after crashing into a tree in Des Moines around 3:30 a.m. Police say an adult female died at the scene. Another adult female passenger was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. EARLHAM, IA (IRN) – A homecoming football game at Earlham took an ugly turn Friday night, as the Cardinals quarterback says he was targeted by a racial slur and fans later clashed after the game. Darrell Matchem, who is Black, ran a quarterback keeper in the fourth quarter, eventually getting tackled along the sideline of visiting Southwest Valley. One of the players yelled “Stay down!” and then used a racial slur. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – A medical cannabidiol dispensary opened Friday in Iowa City. Iowa Cannabis Company management says the difference between their business and CBD stores is that their products have more THC. That’s the chemical that produces the high associated with cannabis. ​​DYERSVILLE, IA (IRN) – The Luther College and Briar Cliff University baseball teams will be the first collegiate teams to play at the Field of Dreams. The Field of Dreams movie site in Dyersville was used in August for a game between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees. Luther and Briar Cliff will take the field on Sept. 16, 2022.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Several people have been injured in a shooting at a hotel in Cedar Rapids. Police responded to the Ramada by Wyndham Hotel just before 10:30 p.m. Friday after receiving a report of shots fired. Witnesses said that a man pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots, hitting several people. The shooting happened during a concert that was taking place at the hotel Friday evening. JOHNSON COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Four homes were damaged, displacing several residents Friday, after a fire tore through a mobile home park in Johnson County. Crews responded to a structure fire in the Regency Mobile Home Court at 2:15 p.m. The Red Cross is helping a total of nine people who were displaced by the fire, but fortunately no injuries were reported. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines is canceling a city contract with a private security company more than two months after reports revealed troubling remarks by the company’s CEO, who referred to local racial justice protests as “terrorism.” The city’s contract with The Conley Group will end at midnight Monday. COLLEGE PARK, MD (IRN) – No. 5 Iowa’s offense exploded at Maryland to improve to 5-0 on the season. It’s the Hawkeyes’ 11th straight win dating back to last season, and eighth straight Big Ten win. Iowa’s defense intercepted Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa five times. Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras threw three touchdowns.

CEDAR FALLS, IA (IRN) – A University of Northern Iowa professor has been relieved of teaching duties for the rest of the semester. Biology professor Steve O’Kane’s rule to require masks in the classroom went against the policies put in place by the Board of Regents in January. If O’Kane fails to comply next semester, the university says further action will be taken. That could include termination. MONTEZUMA, IA (IRN) -The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Poweshiek County Sheriff say that an adolescent’s body was found at about 2 p.m. Thursday near Montezuma. A farmer was doing fieldwork when they came across human remains. They discovered clothing that was similar to what 11-year-old Xavior Harrelson was wearing when he went missing, though they have not confirmed it was Xavior. Xavior went missing on May 27. He was last seen riding his bike in Montezuma, where he lived with his mother. WINNESHIEK COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Two 18-year-olds and several juveniles are facing numerous charges after a string of burglaries, thefts and property damage at several Winneshiek County businesses and country clubs. They face multiple counts of felony burglary, theft and arson. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – The director of a Waterloo nonprofit is being investigated over alleged embezzlement of funds. A search warrant was served at the Jesse Cosby Neighborhood Center. It comes after the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said it received information alleging the misuse of funds by the center’s director, Jesse Henderson. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The hunt for a COVID-19 test in the Des Moines metro will soon get easier, thanks to the local school district. Des Moines Public Schools announced it will offer free drive-thru COVID-19 testing at Hoover High School and the Kurtz Opportunity Center starting Monday.

DYERSVILLE, IA (IRN) – A business led by Baseball Hall of Famer Frank Thomas has purchased a controlling interest in the Field of Dreams Movie Site in Dyersville. Go the Distance Baseball, LLC, made the announcement Thursday morning. The iconic Field of Dreams Movie Site hosted the first Major League Baseball game played in Iowa in August and a second game between the Reds and Cubs was announced for next year. Terms of the sale were not being made public. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The “full force” of Iowa’s hospital systems and state and local health officials came together Wednesday to send a single, unified message to pregnant women: get vaccinated now against COVID-19, both for yourself and your unborn child. Across the state, doctors are seeing a flood of unvaccinated pregnant women in the ICU, preterm babies in the NICU and stillbirths and pregnant mothers lost to the virus. ELDRIDGE, IA (IRN) – A former eastern Iowa police officer for the town of Eldridge has been arrested for sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl while he was on duty. 24-year-old Andrew Denoyer was arrested Tuesday night. He admitted to the crime. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A national conservation organization is suing the Iowa Department of Natural Resources over a proposed northeast Iowa cattle confinement. The Iowa DNR approved Supreme Beef for a cattle confinement of more than 11,600 cattle animals near Bloody Run Creek. The Sierra Club is suing the DNR, saying the state agency violated its own rules when approving the nutrient management plans. CORALVILLE, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Heartlanders, eastern Iowa’s newest hockey team, is asking for help naming its new mascot. The mascot’s costume is a deer with antlers. One suggestion–Deery McDeerFace–has already been rejected. The team’s first game will be on Friday, October 22 at Xtream Arena in Coralville.
