WASHINGTON, D.C. (IRN) – Sen. Chuck Grassley returned to his Washington office today after completing a quarantine due to testing positive for COVID-19. Grassley was asymptomatic throughout his quarantine and was cleared to return to the office by his doctors. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Public Health reports 28 additional COVID-19 deaths Monday as more long-term care facilities report virus outbreaks. Iowa reported 1,200 new positive cases Monday. As of 10 a.m., there have been 2,403 deaths since the start of the pandemic. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Des Moines Police Department on Sunday announced an arrest in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash on Thanksgiving. Des Moines police charged 22-year-old Lim Bol Choul with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and not having insurance. An anonymous tip led police to the suspect. CLINTON COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks remains atop Iowa’s 2nd District congressional race despite a Saturday recount in Clinton County that eroded her already single-digit lead to just six votes. The vote will go to a state canvassing board Monday to be certified, which would make Miller-Meeks the official winner. WEST BURLINGTON, IA (IRN) – Eugene Fraise, a former longtime Iowa state senator, has died of complications of COVID-19. Fraise, 88, died Friday at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. A Democrat from nearby West Point, he served in the Senate from 1986 until his retirement in 2013. IOWA (IRN) – As it currently stands, Iowa’s ’20-21 high school wrestling season has the green light to proceed, but because of the ongoing pandemic, the season is going to look different. Some changes will be small — socially-distanced benches, broken-up practices, slightly-altered weigh-in procedures. Others will be bigger, the schedule being chief among them. The IHSAA gives schools the autonomy to set their own competitions, but they are recommending against large tournaments.

CLINTON COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The Clinton County auditor confirmed on Saturday afternoon that (R) Mariannette Miller-Meeks received an additional two votes from their recount. This results in Miller-Meeks being six votes ahead of (D) Rita Hart in Iowa’s second congressional district. The results will be certified Monday. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Eleven more Iowans have died from COVID-19 and 2,239 additional coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the state, according to the latest numbers from the Iowa Department of Public Health. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Police say Perkins Restaurant and Bakery in Cedar Rapids was robbed at gunpoint on Wednesday night. According to officials, the man showed a gun and left with an undisclosed amount of cash, driving away in a black SUV. LINN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after authorities say he crashed his motorcycle on Saturday in Linn County. He lost control of the motorcycle and hit the median. He was wearing a helmet.

CLINTON COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The last county will finish the recount in Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District race today. Republican Mariannette Miller Meeks currently leads Democrat Rita Hart by only eight votes. The state’s deadline to certify their votes is Monday. EPWORTH, IA (IRN) – No one was injured in a house fire in Epworth yesterday. The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire and the fire was noticed by a neighbor who called 911. The fire started in an outside motion light and was ruled accidental. AUSTIN, TX (IRN) – Breece Hall scored on a 3-yard run with 1:25 remaining, and No. 15 Iowa State held off a last-minute drive by No. 20 Texas to remain in first place in the Big 12 with a 23-20 victory Friday. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Tyler Goodson ran for 87 of his 111 yards in the second half and Zach VanValkenburg recovered a late fumble to secure Iowa’s 26-20 win over Nebraska on Saturday. The Hawkeyes extended their win streak to four games and have beaten the Cornhuskers six years in a row.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Public Health has confirmed 1,266 additional COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours as of 10 a.m. today. There have been 37 additional COVID-19 deaths for a statewide death toll of 2,349. OMAHA, NE (IRN) – A Bellevue, Nebraska, man was jailed after a lengthy chase that crossed back and forth across the Iowa-Nebraska line. The 34-year-old suspect faces multiple charges including reckless driving and possession of methamphetamine. The chase began shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday when Council Bluffs officers stopped a Chevrolet Silverado, but the driver took off and drove into Nebraska. The truck reached speeds of more than 100 mph. The truck later crossed back into Iowa, where Council Bluffs police picked up the pursuit again, deploying spike strips, but the truck headed back to Nebraska. In Omaha, troopers pulled in front of the truck and the driver got out and tried to run but was caught. HIAWATHA, IA (IRN) – Five people were displaced after an early morning fire on Thanksgiving Day in Hiawatha. The five occupants of the building had evacuated after waking up to the power out and smell of smoke in the laundry room. The building is uninhabitable. It had previously been damaged in the August 10th derecho and several units were still under repair. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – The City of Iowa City has announced locations in Iowa City and Coralville where people can recycle holiday lights no longer wanted. Drop-offs began on November 23rd and are available until January 10, 2021. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Hawkeye basketball player Luka Garza unveiled a new fadeaway shot Wednesday in a 97-67 victory over North Carolina Central. Garza had 26 points and 10 rebounds to help the Hawkeyes win their 10th consecutive opener.

JASPER COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Election officials in Jasper County launched a second machine recount of absentee ballots Wednesday to finalize results in Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District race. Democrat Rita Hart has cut Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks’ lead to 9 votes out of more than 394,400 cast, with recount boards in all but two of the district’s 24 counties reporting the results of their recounts. AMES, IA (IRN) – The Ames Police Department is looking for a burglar who they say has broken into multiple apartments. Sometimes he steals things and assaults the women, and sometimes he just watches them sleep. DES MOINES, Iowa – The state of Iowa saw another increase in initial and continuing unemployment claims last week. According to Iowa Workforce Development 9,458 initial claims were filed last week. That’s up more than 3,000 from the week before. LINCOLN, NE (IRN) – The Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska is creating the nation’s largest tribal national park on a forested bluff overlooking the Missouri River and a historic site of its people. The 444-acre park will allow the tribe to tell the story of the Ioway people and provide a rustic getaway where people can hike, camp and bird-watch.
