CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – President Trump is visiting Cedar Rapids to look at the storm damage firsthand today. Cedar Rapids was one of the hardest-hit cities in the state. The president will also meet with Gov. Kim Reynolds and state and local officials. Reynolds is asking for nearly $4 billion of federal help. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – A state agency says it is working to fix a data error on Iowa’s coronavirus website that lowers the number of new confirmed cases and therefore downplays the severity of the current outbreak, just as schools are deciding whether to reopen. The error means the Iowa Department of Public Health has been reporting fewer new infections and a smaller percentage of daily positive tests than is truly the case. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – One person is dead after a crash on Highway 100 in Marion on Monday evening. The Linn County Sheriff’s Office says a Toyota Corolla didn’t yield to traffic on Highway 100. They were then hit by a Toyota Tundra truck. The driver of the Toyota Corolla was killed. BETTENDORF, IA (IRN) – A 17-year-old faces several charges after police say he and another person stole cars and led the police on a high-speed chase through Bettendorf. The stolen Honda minivan he was driving crashed into Bad Boyz Pizza where police were able to arrest him. A stolen Ford Taurus managed to elude police. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Meteorologists with the National Weather Service have done additional surveying of the damage path from last Monday’s derecho, finding peak estimated wind speeds of 130 mph at one point in Linn County. Over 30,000 people in Cedar Rapids were still without power Monday night.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (IRN) – President Donald Trump will tour storm damage in Iowa Tuesday, a day after approving a disaster declaration for the state after a derecho caused massive damage August 10. Trump will be in Cedar Rapids Tuesday to tour damage and meet with Gov. Kim Reynolds to discuss the local, state and federal response. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – TSA agents caught a man with a 9 mm caliber handgun loaded with nine bullets, including one in the chamber, in his carry-on bag at Des Moines International Airport yesterday. TSA officers contacted Des Moines police, who responded to the checkpoint, and confiscated the firearm from the traveler before citing him on a weapons charge. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Public Health on Monday reported 395 more positive coronavirus cases and 3 additional deaths. As of 10 a.m. Monday, there have been 978 deaths since the pandemic began. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Gov. Kim Reynolds has requested an expedited Presidential Major Disaster Declaration after the derecho on Aug. 10. The request estimates that Iowa will need approximately $4 billion from the federal government in order to recover. In the estimates, she includes 8,273 homes that were destroyed or had major damage, $23.6 million for the damage of public infrastructure and $21.6 million for removal and disposal of debris. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Alliant Energy and Linn County utilities continue to restore power to customers across eastern Iowa after Monday’s derecho. Approximately 95% of residents have power. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A man and a woman were arrested in Des Moines Saturday after fleeing from police in a stolen car and taking refuge in a house with a 13-year-old boy. The boy was not injured. AMES, IA (IRN) – Pictures and videos of parties in Ames this past weekend are causing concern on the ISU campus while the COVID-19 pandemic continues. One student said, “there were… bunches of people walking on the streets. No masks. Nothing. No social distancing.” The university said if students wanted to complete the fall semester on-campus, ignoring safety and health policies must stop.

RUTHVEN, IA (IRN) – Law enforcement have made an arrest in connection to the death of a man who was found in an Iowa lake. On July 22, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a body in Virgin Lake, south of Ruthven. Authorities found a body about 25 feet from the shore. They identified the body as Rollin J. Bontrager, 27, of Washington. On Friday, officials charged Allan Michael Dean Schwidder, 29, of Emmetsburg, with first-degree murder in connection to Bontrager’s death. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Public Health’s website shows nine more Iowans have died from COVID-19 and 835 new coronavirus cases have been reported in the state. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Six days after storms tore across Iowa leaving hundreds of thousands with power, Linn County REC reports it has restored power to 87-percent of its members. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Tree-trimming businesses have their work cut out for them in Cedar Rapids and the surrounding area right now, trying to clean up in the path of Monday’s derecho. Authorities believe the companies, many of them from out of town, will be in the area for months.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Public Health on Saturday reported another 835 positive coronavirus cases and 9 additional deaths. There have been 973 deaths since the pandemic began. GRUNDY COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The Iowa State Patrol is reporting a vehicle crash at 1:15 p.m. yesterday that resulted in the death of a 25-year-old from Cedar Falls. Raymond Berner was driving a 2003 Ford F150 west on Highway 20. He caught up to another vehicle in the right lane and made a lane change, but lost control on the left shoulder and over corrected. Berner was sent to the hospital and died. The over correction resulted in the pickup rolling multiple times. Berner wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. AMES, IA (IRN) – Another 75 students have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus as they moved back to campus at Iowa State University. The university is testing all students living in residence halls or on-campus housing as they move in before classes start Monday. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Education announced Friday that all school practices and games would be suspended for activities if education goes online. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Operation BBQ Relief, with the support of several Cedar Rapids area restaurants, will be providing hot meals to Cedar Rapids community members in need on Sunday. The plan is for 500 meals to be served.

IOWA (IRN) – As of 10:00 a.m. today, the Iowa Department of Public Health reports there have been 50,813 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since Iowa’s outbreak began. There have been 678 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, and ten additional deaths for a statewide death toll of 964. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A 49-year-old man has been charged with the beating death of his 71-year-old mother in Cedar Rapids. George Deason is charged with first-degree murder and assault on a police officer. He reportedly threatened officers with what he told them was a handgun and resisted arrest. Officers charged George with robbery and assault among other charges and determined he caused life-threatening injuries to his mother Elsie in order to steal around $50. Deason’s mother died from her injuries. MARION, IA (IRN) – The Marion Fire Department said a family of eight had to be treated for carbon monoxide poisoning after they ran their vehicle in a partially closed garage in order to charge cell phones. The family went to the hospital. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign has sued two Democratic-leaning Iowa counties that are making it easy to vote by mail during the coronavirus pandemic, seeking to invalidate tens of thousands of voters’ absentee ballot applications. The Trump campaign, the Republican National Committee and other GOP groups filed the lawsuits Tuesday against elections officials in Linn and Johnson counties. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Vice President Mike Pence praised the White House’s support for farmers and law enforcement officers at a pair of events in the Des Moines area Thursday against the backdrop of rising coronavirus cases and devastating storm damage. The visit came as Iowa hit a grim new milestone in the pandemic, surpassing 50,000 positive cases, and as farmers grappled with millions of acres of crop damage. More than 200,000 Iowa customers remained without power after Monday’s storm.
