DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Gov. Kim Reynolds announced an executive order establishing The Governor’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board during her Thursday COVID-19 briefing. The board, led by Ruan Transportation CEO Ben McLean, will assess the economic impact of COVID-19 on Iowa businesses and analyze and recommend recovery efforts. Reynolds said the board will “chart a course” for Iowa’s economic comeback. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Workforce Development said Thursday that over $6,200,000 in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance was paid from June 7 to June 13. The department said Iowans filed 9,516 initial unemployment claims. URBANDALE, IA (IRN) – An Urbandale man is facing a charge of attempted murder following a shooting that injured his wife Tuesday night. WHO-TV reports 45-year-old Andrew Wood was allegedly fighting with his wife when he slapped her. She then punched him and fled into a bathroom. Wood went and got a .32 caliber handgun and fired a shot into the wall between him and his wife, telling her “the next one’s going to be in you.” Wood fired five more shots into the wall and one of them hit his wife in the right bicep. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Public Health reports nine more deaths in the state attributed to COVID-19. There have been 670 total deaths from the coronavirus in the state so far. Of those deaths, 350 were residents of long term care facilities. There are currently outbreaks at 35 long term care facilities in Iowa. STORM LAKE, IA (IRN) – Racial slurs interrupted Storm Lake High School’s first softball game of the season earlier this week. Storm Lake Superintendent Dr. Stacey Cole said that incident is serving as a reminder that racism is a serious issue nationwide, and that they need to do more to address it. On Monday night, Cole said a car slowed down and started yelling racial slurs at Storm Lake students and fans, including one hateful slur against Hispanics. IOWA (IRN) – Veterinarians who commit to practicing in rural Iowa can get some student debt relief under a proposal Gov. Kim Reynolds signed into law Wednesday. The Iowa legislature unanimously approved the Rural Veterinary Loan Repayment program before they adjourned on Sunday.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines man was arrested early Wednesday morning after leading police officers on a chase that ended when his SUV crashed into a duplex. WHO-TV reports the chase began shortly after midnight when an officer tried to pull over 35-year-old Daniel Weir on an active parole violation warrant. Weir refused to stop and attempted to elude police. No injuries were reported in the chase. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Vice President Mike Pence stopped for lunch at Sally’s Restaurant in Forest City Tuesday, where he was joined by Gov. Kim Reynolds and Rep. Randy Feenstra. Feenstra beat District 4 Rep. Steve King in the June 2 primary election. After lunch, Pence traveled to Winnebago Industries for a tour of the facility. Members of Des Moines Black Lives Matter arrived in Forest City to protest during the vice president’s visit. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds confirmed Tuesday that she plans to sign an executive order that would automatically restore voting rights to convicted felons before the November general election. Iowa is the only state in the nation that automatically denies felons the right to vote. IOWA (IRN) – Another nine people with COVID-19 have died in Iowa and there have been an additional 120 confirmed cases, the state reported Tuesday. The state also reported a total of 661 COVID-19-related deaths. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – The Iowa City council is considering a proposal to restructure the police department. KGAN-TV reports Tuesday’s draft resolution would pave the way for more community policing and unarmed response in non-violent situations.

TERRE HAUTE, IN (IRN) – Iowa native Dustin Lee Honken, who is convicted of murdering five people, will be executed July 17, at the U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana. Honken, 52, was convicted in 2004 in one of the state’s most heinous mass murders: five people, including two girls who were 10 and 6. Also shot to death were their mother and two men who were to testify against Honken in a 1993 drug trial. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – There was a double stabbing in Des Moines yesterday. KCCI-TV reports police found a 46-year-old male and 37-year-old male with stab wounds at an apartment complex. Witnesses say the men are friends who appear to have stabbed each other. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – University of Iowa Football Strength and Conditioning coach Chris Doyle is no longer part of the program and is getting a hefty payday to leave. Doyle will receive 15 months-worth of pay for over $1,100,000. Doyle has been accused by dozens of former players of racial disparities. He’s been with Kirk Ferentz and Hawkeye football for more than 20 years, and helped 60 players reach the NFL. He made $800,000 a year. DES MOINES, Iowa (CNN) – A central Iowa high school baseball team took a knee in protest during their game monday night. CNN reports all of the players for Des Moines Roosevelt High School kneeled as the national anthem played. The move follows Colin Kaepernick’s peaceful protest during the 2016 NFL season, and comes as anti-police brutality protests continue around the world. CLINTON, IA (IRN) – A black bear was spotted crossing through Clinton County near Grand Mound early Monday evening. WQAD-TV reports people who spotted the bear say it was calm, ate corn, and took naps every few minutes.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – The University of Iowa Athletic Department announced a separation agreement on Monday with Chris Doyle, head strength and conditioning coach and executive director of football for the Hawkeyes. Effective Monday, Doyle will no longer serve as the team’s strength coach. Additionally, the department announced that a Kansas City-based law firm will conduct an independent review of alleged racial disparities in the football program. Hawkeye head football coach Kirk Ferentz placed Doyle on administrative leave June 6 following allegations of racism against him. FOREST CITY, IA (IRN) – Vice President Mike Pence is returning to Iowa Tuesday, just five weeks after he last visited the state. Pence will have lunch with Gov. Kim Reynolds before touring Winnebago Industries. After the tour, the vice president will deliver remarks to employees and then return to Washington, D.C. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Republicans in the Iowa House and Senate passed an amendment overnight Saturday to the state’s abortion laws. The amendment requires women to wait 24 hours before getting an abortion. Democratic lawmakers expressed outrage, saying Republican lawmakers exploited the COVID-19 pandemic to create and move forward the legislation. Democrats say Republicans kept the plan secret for weeks and released it on a Saturday night, so they didn’t have to hear from Iowans. IOWA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Public Health reported one additional death attributed to COVID-19. There have been 651 total deaths from the coronavirus in the state so far. Of those deaths, 341 were residents of long-term care facilities. There are currently coronavirus outbreaks at 36 long-term care facilities in the state. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – The first Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll since the June 2 primary shows Republican Senator Joni Ernst trailing Democratic challenger Theresa Greenfield by three percentage points. The poll, which was released Saturday evening, shows 46% of likely voters would vote for Greenfield if the election were held today. 43% say they would back Ernst. CORALVILLE, IA (IRN) – Iowans are getting outside during the pandemic. KWWL-TV reports state parks and lakes are busier than ever. So busy in fact, lakes such as Lake MacBride in Coralville have reached capacity numerous times. Saturday, the state park entrance shut down to new visitors from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. because the area reached capacity.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa House Republicans introduced an amendment Saturday that would require women to wait 24 hours before they’re allowed to have an abortion performed. The amendment was proposed last-minute during Saturday’s session. MAQUOKETA, IA (IRN) – A man in rural Maquoketa is dead after being ran over by a tractor Saturday afternoon. Stephen Miller, 63, was filling a fertilizer tank that was hooked up to a farm tractor. While Miller was waiting for the tank to fill, the tractor slipped into gear and moved forwards. Miller was run over by the rear wheels of the tractor and fertilizer applicator trailer. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Democrat Theresa Greenfield is leading Sen. Joni Ernst in a close race for U.S. Senate, according to a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll. According to the poll, 46% of likely voters would vote for Greenfield if the election were held today, while 43% would vote for Ernst. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Public Health reported 385 new positive COVID-19 cases and 9 deaths. That brings the statewide total to 23,551 positive cases and 650 deaths. State data continues to show flat or declining positive cases as testing has increased.
