NORTHWOOD, IA (IRN) – A jury has found a Worth County man guilty of attempted murder. KIMT-TV reports Trapp Leroy Trotter Jr., 32 of Northwood, was arrested for stabbing and slashing a man from Manly in 2018. Authorities said Trotter chased him into a Northwood apartment and stabbed him. The victim has recovered. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Federal prosecutors are seeking the equivalent of a life sentence for a former elite Iowa youth basketball coach who sexually abused and exploited 400 boys over a decade. KGAN-TV reports prosecutors asked a judge to sentence former Iowa Barnstormers coach Greg Stephen to 180 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for May 2. AMES, IA (IRN) – An Iowa State University graduate student has been charged with sexual abuse after raping two women he met on dating apps in the span of 24 hours. KCCI-TV reports Jona Paulus, 33, of Ames, was booked into the Story County Jail, where he remains in lieu of $50,000 cash-only bail. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Fire crews spent much of Friday evening at the scene of a restaurant heavily damaged by fire. More than a half-dozen fire trucks responded to Riley’s Cafe. The restaurant suffered extensive damage in the fire that was confined to the ceiling. EASTERN IOWA (IRN) – Thanks to recent snowfall north of the Quad Cities, another crest is headed down the Mississippi River in the coming days that will cause more flooding. WQAD-TV reports the next crest will be arriving late next week, making its way down from Dubuque through Burlington causing another round of flooding for eastern Iowa.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines Water Works will soon unveil a new pump station. KCCI-TV reports the $2.5-million project will help filter nitrates out of drinking water. Water Works has been criticized in the past for dumping nitrates into the river downstream. Starting Monday, nitrates won’t go into the river. The project was started by the late Bill Stowe who died Sunday. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A 17-year-old has pleaded not guilty in the shooting death of a woman whose body was dumped in the middle of a West Des Moines road. KCCI-TV reports Eliazar Montoya Gama, of Des Moines, allegedly picked up 18-year-old Sakira Bonner at a hotel because she wanted to buy marijuana. Bonner was then beaten, robbed and shot numerous times, and her body left in the middle of the road. BOONE, IA (IRN) – A 17-year-old girl was hospitalized after falling from a road bridge onto busy railroad tracks in Boone County. The Des Moines Register reports that the girl fell about 30 feet Monday on to Union Pacific tracks west of Boone. First responders used GPS to reach the site after receiving a frantic 911 call from another teen. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A bill that would legalize betting on sporting events and fantasy sports in Iowa has passed the Senate and is expected to be considered as soon as Monday in the House. The bill excludes betting on some events, including minor leagues and in-state college team players. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – The cross Christians venerate is typically symbolic of the one they believe Jesus Christ was killed on, but a priest says there is little symbolism at St. Mary’s Church in Iowa City. There, the parish claims to have a piece of what they call the “true cross.” KCRG-TV reports Father Steve Witt acknowledges the claim is a “bold” one but says the parish has documentation from the Vatican to prove their claims. There’s one problem though–they’ve misplaced the documentation.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Public Health is reporting a second case of measles confirmed in the state. Department of Health officials said this case is an unvaccinated Northeast Iowa resident, who is a household contact of the recently confirmed measles case of an unvaccinated Northeast Iowa resident with recent travel to Israel, where measles transmission is occurring. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – A man was arrested last night after leading police on a high speed chase through Rock Island and ultimately crashing into a parking garage in Davenport. WQAD-TV reports the suspect, Zaccheus Nathaniel Hayes, 20, of Rock Island, was wanted in connection with battery with a firearm in Rock Island. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Authorities in Des Moines are investigating the city’s fifth homicide so far this year after a man died Wednesday of stab wounds. Police responding to a call found that 31-year-old Thein Aung, of Des Moines, had been stabbed in the chest. He was taken to Mercy Medical Center, where he later died. MARSHALLTOWN, IA (IRN) – A body found Monday in Marshalltown was that of an Iowa woman who went missing about a month ago. The Des Moines Register reports the remains found Monday in a field near the Marshalltown Walmart belong to Michelle Grommet. Grommet was reported missing March 22 and was last seen March 15, near the Walmart. The body was found by a man working in the field. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Concerns about Iowa’s privatized Medicaid system and similar programs across the country are now facing additional scrutiny from the Office of the Inspector General. The federal investigation will look into whether or not patients are being denied care, among other issues. Then-Governor Terry Branstad moved Iowa’s Medicaid system to a privatized format in 2016. Governor Kim Reynolds still supports that decision. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – People are calling an Iowa dog a hero after he saved his family from their burning home, something they believe would have killed them otherwise. The fire broke out last week while the Hattens were asleep in their Winterset home, according to KCCI. Luckily, 3-year-old Buck was able to wake up Bryce Hatten, 17, who then alerted the rest of the family. All five family members and their six dogs were able to get out safely.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A man is in custody after crashing a car into a Drake University fraternity house yesterday evening. KCCI-TV reports the driver crashed into the Theta Chi fraternity house and fled the scene. Officers caught up with and arrested the driver, Jamaal Dudley, 23, of Polk City. He’s charged with OWI, carrying weapons, interference with official acts and other traffic charges. No one was hurt in the crash. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A jury has found a Des Moines man guilty of second-degree murder for stabbing his brother to death at a family gathering in 2017. Shawn Eugene Davis had earlier been convicted of second-degree murder in the shooting death of another man in 1986. DELAWARE COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A Delaware County man accused of killing his wife would like his bond reduced. KCRG-TV reports Todd Mullis, 42, is charged with first degree murder in the death of Amy Mullis, 39, in November. Officials say he used a corn rake to kill her because he thought she was having an affair. He would like his bond reduced from $5 million to $1 million. ALTA, IA (IRN) – A motorcycle driver has died after being involved in a crash near the Buena Vista town of Alta Monday night. A witness said that the motorcycle hit an anhydrous tank being pulled by a truck. Officials say speed was a factor in the crash. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Senate has sent a bill legalizing the growing of industrial hemp to the House for consideration. The Iowa Hemp Act passed the Senate Monday 49-1. The bill allows licensed growers to cultivate the crop on up to 40 acres.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A jury has convicted a man who Des Moines police say was found with his dying girlfriend’s blood on his hands. The Des Moines Register reports that 33-year-old Nickolas Pettinger was found guilty Monday of first-degree murder. He’ll be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors say Pettinger choked and used a 20-pound weight to batter 19-year-old Katelynn “Kat” Gould in a Des Moines garage. OSKALOOSA, IA (IRN) – An Oskaloosa man has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the stabbing death of a college basketball player last year. KCCI-TV reports a Mahaska County jury Monday convicted 24-year-old Luke VanHemert, who argued that he was defending himself when he fatally stabbed 22-year-old William Penn player Marquis Todd in March 2018. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – A man is facing criminal charges after an argument at home devolved into several alleged assaults on Sunday in Davenport. WQAD-TV reports police responded to a call at a Kwik Shop, where Jacob Mitchell, 27, had allegedly shot a female clerk with a stun gun. Earlier, Mitchell reportedly got into a fight and assaulted his mother’s boyfriend, and then struck his mother numerous times in the face and head. OTHO, IA (IRN) – An effort is underway in Webster County to preserve part of the state’s history. WHO-TV reports the historical museum in Otho is home to about 10,000 artifacts at risk of being destroyed. Phillis Stewart, the 83-year-old woman who runs the museum, said the leaky roof isn’t holding up. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Governor Kim Reynolds is asking Iowa lawmakers for $15 million from the ending balance of the current year’s budget for immediate work on levees and repairs in flooded communities. She’s also seeking $10 million from next year’s budget to accelerate housing improvements. Reynolds also announced the creation of a Flood Recovery Advisory Board, which will coordinate state recovery efforts. Reynolds says she’ll lead the panel of up to 15 people.
