DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines woman is facing charges after police say she was driving drunk with five kids in the car. KCCI-TV reports 38-year-old Wanda Swanson is charged with five counts of child endangerment, driving while barred, open container, narcotics possession and operating while intoxicated. She admitted early Sunday morning to drinking and smoking marijuana before getting behind the wheel. MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – A Saturday crash in Mason City totaled three vehicles and set two of them on fire. KIMT-TV reports 54-year-old Diane Rick lost control and left the roadway. She struck a parked Mini Cooper, and the Mini Cooper slammed into a light poll. Debris from the light pole fell on a parked Subaru. MUSCATINE, IA (IRN) – A Muscatine man is in jail after a shooting and a standoff, according to WQAD-TV. Muscatine police responded to a call of shots fired. They were able to enter the home, and pulled a man who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to safety. The alleged shooter, Mario Perales, wouldn’t come out of the home until chemical irritants were deployed. Perales has been charged with attempted murder. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – A Waterloo home was destroyed by a fire that started in the kitchen Saturday. KWWL-TV reports a man was sleeping on his couch when a smoke alarm went off and he smelled smoke. His girlfriend had been cooking. The couple and their child were able to escape safely. The man tried to go back into the home to rescue their cat, but neighbors persuaded him not to. It’s not clear if the cat escaped. IOWA (IRN) – The Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division is reminding bars and restaurants they cannot serve beverages in solid copper cups. WHO-TV reports Iowa has adopted the FDA’s code that prohibits copper from coming into direct contact with foods that have a pH below 6. This includes vinegar, fruit juice, and wine, and the popular Moscow mules, typically served in a copper mug. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A woman from a Cedar Rapids suburb had her dream come true, according to KCRG-TV. 93-year-old Lottie Sands has always wanted to go on a balloon ride, and Sunday she got her chance. Guaranty Bank and Trust and Buzzards Glory Balloon Company helped provide the hot air balloon trip to Lottie and her daughter. Her daughter says Lottie couldn’t stop smiling during the ride.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Iowa City Police are investigating a shooting Saturday night, according to KCRG-TV. Police were originally called to a fight in progress. When officers arrived they found a male victim bleeding. He was knocking on a door for help. Police determined he was robbed and shot. The victim was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. MAHASKA COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office has filed charges in connection to a house and garage fire last week. WHO-TV reports a 13-year-old male has been charged. He faces one count of reckless use of fire or explosives. TAMPA BAY, FL (IRN) – Police arrested an Iowa man Saturday after he stalked actress Kate Beckinsale at the Tampa Bay Comic Con. KCCI-TV reports 45-year-old Terry Repp, of Moravia, has been charged with stalking. Repp appears to have an “irrational obsession” with the actress and has traveled across the United States to other events to harass her. LANSING, IA (IRN) – Riders dipped their bikes in the Mississippi River yesterday, signifying the end of RAGBRAI 2017 in Lansing. The journey started last Sunday in Orange City. KWWL-TV reports when Barbara Lloyd of Tempe AZ was asked how she felt after conquering the over 400 mile trek, she replied “relieved.” Former professional cyclist Lance Armstrong and NASCAR drivers Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson participated this year in the annual ride.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Wells Fargo has agreed to refund $80 million to customers hit by car loan insurance they didn’t need. The unnecessary cost forced more than 270,000 customers into delinquency on their loans. About 20,000 customers had their vehicles wrongfully repossessed because of the additional cost of insurance. Wells Fargo has its headquarters in Des Moines. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines police are investigating a homicide after a man was shot and killed Friday. KCCI-TV reports police were called to a report of a shooting, and when they arrived, they found a man with several gunshot wounds walking down the street. Witnesses say a man and a woman were walking when a person in a car pulled up and shot the man. Witnesses provided a vehicle description, and two men were apprehended. This is the city’s 19th homicide so far this year, compared with just 13 homicides in all of 2016. STORY COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A group of 15-25 detasselers were sprayed with chemicals while in a field Friday when they were inadvertently sprayed by a crop duster. WHO-TV reports some of the workers felt nauseous and had headaches. First responders from various agencies worked to decontaminate the workers, and no one was hospitalized. TRIPOLI, IA (IRN) – The DNR reports heavy rainfall last weekend in northeastern Iowa has caused a breach of a public hunting area dike. Storms dropped up to 15 inches of rain in the Wapsipinicon and Plum Creek watersheds in Chickasaw and Bremer counties. DNR officials say that caused a 60-by-40-foot section of the dike on Martens Lake on the Sweet Marsh Wildlife Management Area to fail. There is no timeline on repairs. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – A group of North Liberty middle school students helped install five new bat houses Friday. KCRG-TV reports students at North Central Junior High installed the bat houses at the Turkey Creek Recreation Area. Bruce Loan, a custodian who helped the children build the houses, says they wanted to build and install them because bat habitat is decreasing, and that bats are an important part of the ecosystem.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – As the investigation into the tragic ride accident at the Ohio State Fair continues, Iowa State Fair organizers are taking additional safety precautions to make sure their rides are safe. The fair has hired an independent contractor for safety inspections, as well as the state inspectors. They say having two different sets of eyes on the rides will make them even safer than in years past. BETTENDORF, IA (IRN) – A Bettendorf couple are facing charges after they received marijuana through the mail. KWQC-TV reports 21-year old Tanner Werthmann and 24-year-old Steve Le face multiple drug charges. On Tuesday Le went to a post office and picked up a package that smelled strongly of fresh marijuana. Police say they admitted having marijuana shipped to them which they intended to sell to help pay their bills. ANKENY, IA (IRN) – An Ankeny couple who adopted nine children with disabilities has been charged with child endangerment. John and Joyce Bell were jailed Thursday. The arrests came hours after Ankeny police turned over 68 police reports in response to a Des Moines Register probe into years of child abuse in the home. The couple’s 21-year-old adopted daughter questioned why they hadn’t been arrested after she provided police four expletive-laden videos depicting physical abuse of her adoptive brother. CARROLL COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The State Auditor’s office says a pair of Carroll County employees split more than $128,000 that rightfully belongs to the county. Deputy Tom Fransen taught a permit to carry weapon class for the county. Shanna Balukoff, an administrator, assisted. None of the money collected for the classes was given to the county. The two split the proceeds instead. CORALVILLE, IA (IRN) – Coralville police have arrested a woman after finding her in the parking lot of an elementary school with her car running after 10:00 at night. KCRG-TV reports Allisandra Roe had slurred speech, bloodshot watery eyes and a strong smell of cannabis. She had been driving around smoking marijuana, which was found in the car. DECORAH, IA (IRN) – The 51st annual Nordic Fest is underway in Decorah. The annual festival celebrates the area’s Scandinavian roots with music and food you’ve probably never heard of. It usually pulls anywhere from 10,000-20,000 people to the city. But this year, attendance will be up. RAGBRAI passes through today.

DUNDEE, IA (IRN) – A 17-year-old Cedar Rapids teen is recovering in the hospital after falling down a bluff at Backbone State Park. DNR officials say they received the report of the girl falling during a hike on Monday night. Witnesses say the girl fell about 80 feet into a muddy area. MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – A San Diego developer has sued Mason City and the Chamber of Commerce Foundation, alleging breach of contract and interference. The Mason City Globe Gazette reports G8 Development alleges the chamber interfered with his contract to build a downtown hotel and had secret meetings with City Council members to champion a competing proposal. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines woman charged with murder in the shooting death of her stepfather says Iowa’s new “stand your ground law” applies to her case. WHO-TV reports 29-year-old Sera Alexander pled not guilty to first degree murder in the death of 49-year-old Anthony Hartmann. Police say Sera shot Hartmann when he came to the home. Legal experts expect many more such claims in the future under the new law. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The battle between a former state employee, who is gay, and the governor’s office that wanted him to quit is close to reaching $1 million in legal bills. KCCI-TV reports the Iowa Supreme Court ruled that former Iowa Workers’ Compensation Commissioner Chris Godfrey can seek damages for alleged retaliation he faced under former Gov. Terry Branstad. Branstad has denied the allegations. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A group of Iowa businessmen has filed a lawsuit against United Airlines over the death of Simon – a giant rabbit – after a flight from London to Chicago. KWQC-TV reports the businessmen intended to show Simon at the Iowa State Fair and then display the animal to raise money for the Fair. The lawsuit says United was negligent in the care and transportation of Simon and then improperly cremated the rabbit. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Patients and their families at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics were given the chance to focus on something other than their healthcare Wednesday afternoon- ice cream! KCRG-TV reports the Coralville Dairy Queen provided 500 mini-Blizzards to all those who came by. Today, a portion of Dairy Queen Blizzard sales at participating stores will benefit hospitals in support of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
