DENMARK, IA (IRN) – The Lee County Sheriff’s Office says a man from the southeastern Iowa town of Denmark has been shot, and his son is believed to be the shooter. KCCI-TV reports deputies found a man suffering from two gunshot wounds. Authorities arrested the son in Fort Madison. He was taken to juvenile detention center in Montrose. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Cedar Rapids police are investigating a shooting at the Coin Kleen Laundromat Saturday evening. KCRG-TV reports witnesses say someone fired four shots through one of the laundromat’s windows, hitting a man inside in the torso. He was taken to an area hospital, and police believe his injuries are non-life threatening. GRAETTINGER, IA (IRN) – An investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board says an ethanol-fueled fire in Iowa at the site of rural train derailment is still burning two days after it erupted. The derailment occurred around 1 a.m. Friday near Graettinger, about 160 miles northwest of Des Moines. It sent 27 tanker cars, each carrying 25,000 gallons of ethanol, off the tracks. Two crew members escaped unharmed, and no other injuries have been reported. KANSAS CITY, MO (IRN) – The Iowa State Cyclones men’s basketball team won their third Big 12 Tournament Championship trophy in the last four years Saturday evening. The Cyclones cruised past #2 seed West Virginia in the title game 80-74. They opened the tournament with a victory over Oklahoma State Thursday and knocked off TCU in the semifinals Friday. The Cyclones now have an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament next week.

BURLINGTON, IA (IRN) – Police in eastern Iowa are warning area residents and businesses to be on the lookout for movie-prop money. KWWL-TV reports businesses have been duped into accepting fake cash designed for movie sets. The counterfeit bills look authentic at first glance but are clearly labeled to indicate they are not. The fake $50 and $100 denominations are stamped with the words “FOR MOTION PICTURE USE ONLY.” URBANDALE, IA (IRN) – Urbandale police are looking for two men accused of throwing fireworks at pedestrians, according to KCCI-TV. One victim says a black Nissan sedan drove up to him and that two male occupants yelled something and threw a firework, which exploded next to him. The firework in the second incident exploded near the victim’s face, and the victim required medical treatment. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Statehouse Republicans are working to scrap Iowa’s can and bottle redemption law, looking to do away with the 5-cent deposit and instead rely on voluntary curbside recycling. KGAN-TV reports a new poll shows nearly nine in ten Iowans want to keep the current law. Every age group, political party, congressional district and community type overwhelmingly supports keeping the law or expanding it DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – Gov. Terry Branstad’s Senate confirmation hearing to be U.S. ambassador to China is scheduled for the first week of April, according to KCRG-TV. While Democrats have tried to block more contentious nominations, significant opposition to Branstad’s appointment is unlikely. Branstad is the country’s longest-serving governor. Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds will replace him, becoming Iowa’s first female governor. GRANGER, IA (IRN) – Dozens of students at Woodward-Granger Elementary School gathered to get haircuts at a school assembly on Friday. WHO-TV reports for the past year, 35 students went without a haircut in preparation for the second annual Cut for a Cause event. On Friday, they lined up in barber chairs in front of their classmates to get their hair cut in support of children with cancer. All of the hair will be donated to make wigs for children undergoing cancer treatments.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Supreme Court says the state’s gambling regulators may consider the impact of proposed casinos on existing ones when deciding new casino license applications. The decision today upholds a district court judge’s ruling in a Cedar Rapids attorney’s challenge to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission. The attorney says the commission exceeded its authority, and the court disagrees. MUSCATINE, IA (IRN) – City leaders in Muscatine will discuss a motion to schedule a hearing on removal charges against Mayor Diana Broderson. Charges of willful misconduct were filed against the mayor back in February by the city attorney, which claimed the mayor constantly over stepped her bounds by not consulting the council before making decisions to address the people of Muscatine. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Lincoln High School student died Thursday afternoon after being run over by a road grader as school was dismissed, according to KCCI-TV. 16-year-old Antonio Sanchez-Peck, an 11th-grader at the school, was leaving for home when he was struck by the road grader. Parents say the road is a busy mix of traffic and kids before and after school. WEBSTER CITY, IA (IRN) – One person is dead following an overnight fire in Webster City and another is in critical condition. WHO-TV reports fire crews were called to the home after a neighbor noticed the fire. Fire crews found two people, a male and a female, unconscious in the home. The male was taken to the hospital in Webster City but died. The female was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals by air ambulance and is listed in critical condition. HIAWATHA, IA (IRN) – A Hiawatha couple and their four children are trying to decide what to do after their house caught on fire, according to KCRG-TV. Janie Zirbee says “I put a pan of oil on the stove and I wasn’t gone for more than two minutes, and apparently there was an electrical surge and it just blew up.” Everyone got out safely, but it will take months to repair the rental home. The family will soon run out of money, and plan to live in their car until repairs are made. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Republican-controlled Iowa House has approved a contested voter identification bill along party lines. Republican lawmakers have for years supported identification at polling places, saying it’s needed to fight improper voting despite the rarity of voter fraud. Democrats repeatedly argued the bill would suppress voter turnout among minorities, the elderly and the disabled.

EVANSVILLE, IA (IRN) – Authorities may have a new lead in an Iowa cold case, thanks to a double murder investigation in Indiana. KCCI-TV reports ten-year-old Elizabeth Collins and eight-year-old Lyric Cook were kidnapped and murdered in July of 2012 in Evansdale. Fourteen-year-old Liberty German and 13-year-old Abigail Williams were kidnapped from a park near Delphi, Indiana last month. Their bodies were discovered the next day. There are similarities in the two cases. MONTICELLO, IA (IRN) – An 8-year-old has died from injuries suffered in a collision in Monticello. The Iowa State Patrol reports just before 4 p.m. Wednesday the child was riding a tricycle eastbound on a city street and collided with the front of a minivan traveling south. MAQUOKETA, IA (IRN) – A bank robbery in Maquoketa yesterday led to a car chase and crash. WQAD-TV reports 40-year-old Dante Rhodes, of Dubuque, was arrested. Police received a call about a robbery at Fidelity Bank. A teller says the man handed her a note and implied that he had a gun, but didn’t show one. Rhodes fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and took off in a vehicle. He eventually sideswiped another vehicle, then struck an unmarked patrol car head on. He fled, but was caught, tasered and arrested. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A bill headed to the Iowa Senate will allow Iowans to use deadly force in public if they feel threatened. KCCI-TV reports Polk County attorney John Sarcone says the bill will “legalize murder” if it becomes law. Those in favor say stand-your-ground respects Iowans right to protect themselves. Sarcone says in states where the law has been passed, violence has increased. He adds it’s a solution looking for a problem where there isn’t one. SEYMOUR, IA (IRN) – When the town of Seymour and the school district needed help after Monday’s EF2 tornado damage, hundreds of students and their teachers from neighboring schools answered the call. WHO-TV reports Seymour residents called the group of volunteers a ‘little army’ and couldn’t thank each and every one of them enough for the work they did.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Court documents reveal new information in the eighth homicide of 2017 in Des Moines, according to KCCI-TV. James Russell Walden, 60, is charged with the first degree murder of Sheila Ray Keenan. Keenan was struck in the head and upper torso with a blunt object, ultimately causing her death. A witness saw Walden washing blood from his hands. He told the witness, “I had to knock her out because she was in my pockets.” JACKSON JUNCTION, IA (IRN) – Law enforcement is investigating the killing of a bald eagle in Winneshiek County. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the state and federally protected bird was found March 3 in a ditch four miles north of the Turkey Valley Community School. The eagle had been shot to death. DUBUQUE COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A jury found Imere Hall guilty of murder and first-degree robbery in a fatal shooting in the small town of Key West in Dubuque County. KCRG-TV reports Hall was one of several people who broke into Collin Brown’s home at a trailer park last April. Someone shot and killed Brown when he tried to run away. Hall faces a life sentence without the possibility of parole. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa House has approved a gun bill that includes an anywhere stand-your-ground provision and allows citizens to sue local governments that impose weapons restrictions. KCCI-TV reports it would allow children under age 14 to use handguns with parental supervision and allow weapons on the Capitol grounds. SEYMOUR, IA (IRN) – The National Weather Service reports at least ten tornadoes hit Iowa Monday evening. Perhaps the most serious damage occurred in the Wayne County town of Seymour. Two houses were completely destroyed, and many others suffered significant damage. The Seymour School Building took a direct hit, with windows blown out and the gym roof destroyed. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Over the weekend, people in Texas and all over the world learned they need to head to Iowa if they want to get a great plate of barbecue. WHO-TV reports Des Moines’ own Smokey D’s claimed another major barbecue title Saturday, being named the overall grand champion at the Rodeo Houston World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest. The restaurant also won for best ribs.
