DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – A worker has died after being trapped by a cave-in at Linwood Mining and Mineral near Davenport, according to WQAD-TV. The body has been recovered. Linwood Mining is an active limestone mine that has been in service since the 1960s. ELKADER, IA (IRN) – A carnival worker has been imprisoned for sexually abusing a girl while he was working at the Clayton County Fair. KWWL-TV reports 27-year-old David Pennington Jr., of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was given five years. Pennington was working at the fair in August when he had sexual contact with a teenage girl when they were alone in a camper. DALLAS CENTER, IA (IRN) – A Dallas Center pastor faces thirteen charges related to a sexual abuse investigation. Raccoon Valley Radio reports 52 year-old Randy Johnson is charged with four Class C felonies for third degree sex abuse, and one count of lascivious acts with a child, among other charges. Sources say he is a pastor at the Church of the Brethren in Dallas Center and lives next door to the church. CENTERVILLE, IA (IRN) – A high school employee in Centerville has been arrested and charged after allegedly having sexual contact with a student. KCCI-TV reports 23-year-old Branson Hehnke was charged with sexual exploitation by a school employee. Hehnke is listed as an assistant coach for the Centerville High School wrestling and track teams on a Centerville athletics website. CLEAR LAKE, IA (IRN) – A Clear Lake man has been arrested for assaulting another man at a North Iowa bar, according to KIMT-TV. 56-year-old Bruce Otto Bonorden is accused of pushing a man down a flight of stairs into the basement, then following him down and kicking and hitting the alleged victim in the head and face. The victim lost two teeth, suffered lacerations and bruising, possible nerve damage, and the loss of full movement in his left arm. HANLONTOWN, IA (IRN) – A Magellan Pipeline Company’s diesel line ruptured yesterday in Worth County near Hanlontown. Nearly 140,000 gallons of diesel fuel were released. Iowa DNR staff report the fuel pooled in a farm field and does not appear to have reached surface waters. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A rally was held in Cedar Rapids Wednesday night in support of refugees and illegal immigrants. KCRG-TV reports the demonstration was a response to news that President Trump is moving forward with his plans to tighten the country’s immigration laws.

OTTUMWA, IA (IRN) – Quick action by the Ottumwa Police Department has landed an Ottumwa man in jail. WQAD-TV reports officers responded to a report of robbery at gas station. A white male, later identified as 20-year-old Anthony Scott Boatright entered the store, displayed a weapon and demanded cash from the clerk. He fled the store with an undisclosed amount of money, but officers caught him running from the scene. NEVADA, IA (IRN) – One person was injured when a vehicle was hit by a train Tuesday night near Nevada. KCCI-TV reports an SUV driven by 64-year-old Kathleen Orcutt was southbound when she noticed the train traveling west on the tracks. Orcutt attempted to stop and slid into the path of the train. The SUV was dragged approximately 300 feet west along the tracks before going over a steep embankment. Her condition was considered non-life threatening. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – Waterloo police are investigating the death of a man firefighters found inside a 2-story house yesterday. KCRG-TV reports friends of the victim became concerned when he didn’t show up for work and wouldn’t answer his phone. They went to his house, saw it ablaze, and called 911. DENISON, IA (IRN) – The search for a 15-year-old Denison girl continues after she was swept away in the Boyer River after a car she was riding in crashed into the river at approximately 3:00 a.m. Thursday. KETV reports the driver of the car, 25-year-old Ramon Hernandez, is in jail on multiple charges, including drug distribution to minors. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The plan to eliminate state funding for Planned Parenthood is moving on to the Senate Judiciary Committee, according to WHO-TV. Hundreds of protesters dressed in pink rallied against the bill at the Capitol Tuesday, but this didn’t prevent the Republican-led legislation from moving forward. Democrats say this would limit access to healthcare, while Republicans say it would increase access because funding will be distributed to more healthcare providers. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Public Safety says more than 1,700 Iowa firefighters and emergency responders have been issued improper credentials due to improper test scoring over a four-year period. A former employee, John McPhee, is charged with misconduct in office and tampering with records. Affected individuals are being notified.

FORT DODGE, IA (IRN) – Police in Fort Dodge said a former high school swim coach has been charged with sexual assault. KCCI-TV reports that 23-year-old Aaron Poldervaart, an employee with the Fort Dodge Community School District, has allegedly committed sex acts upon a Fort Dodge Senior High student. Poldervaart served as an Assistant Boys and Girls Swim Coach during the 2015-2016 season. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A Cedar Rapids man has been accused of stabbing another man in the head and neck. KWWL-TV reports 37-year-old Tramond Franklin turned himself into officers. He’s charged with willful injury. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A northwest Iowa man who hit five cyclists without bike lights several years ago is now pushing for stricter bike laws. The Des Moines Register reports Daryl Hasche hit five teenage girls with his motorcycle while riding in the dark five years ago. The cyclists were riding side by side, and didn’t have any lights on their bikes. A bill requiring flashing rear-facing lights on bicycles between sunset and sunrise is being written. MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – A woman has been arrested for an alleged ambush at the Cerro Gordo County Courthouse, according to KIMT-TV. 50-year-old Misti Lynn Thoe of Mason City is charged with willful injury causing serious injury. Thoe waited for a woman to exit the courthouse and then smashed her head into the concrete corner of the building. There were four witnesses, and a security camera captured the assault. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Fences have been placed between Des Moines City Hall and the Des Moines River after a sinkhole developed near the levee Monday morning. KCCI-TV reports that the hole is about 150 feet long and 25 feet wide. Business owners in the East Village are being notified that crews will soon be filling the hole. Officials are unsure what caused it. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The U.S.D.A.’s summary of last year’s corn crop shows it was record setting for Iowa farmers. KCRG-TV reports corn production reached 2.74 billion bushels, 9% above the previous record set in 2015. Farmers harvested an average of 203 bushels per acre, marking the first time Iowa’s statewide yield surpassed 200 bushels per acre. The state has led the nation in corn production for the last 23 consecutive years. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Governor Terry Branstad is having trouble getting his paperwork together for his new job, according to WHO-TV. President Donald Trump nominated Branstad to be the next U.S. Ambassador to China. He’s required to document all foreign travel, and he’s having a hard time doing it. Branstad counts 17 trips to Japan, another 6 to China, along with numerous other trips overseas. Branstad says some records were destroyed in a fire.

WARREN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – An inmate who died in the Warren County Jail last fall committed suicide. The Des Moines Register reports the medical examiner determined 26-year-old Jacob Dale Miller hanged himself in his cell. He was in jail on a domestic assault charge. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – University of Iowa officials sent out a crime alert Sunday evening, after a reported sexual assault earlier in the day. The victim reported the assault happened between 12 a.m. and 3 a.m. Sunday at a residence hall. The alleged perpetrator is believed to be an acquaintance of the victim. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Des Moines Police Department is warning people about a new phone scam, where the caller asks you to donate to something called the “Fallen Officer Memorial.” Police say they never solicit funds over the phone, so this call is not coming from them. There is a memorial fund for fallen officers, but the caller asking for donations in this scam is not part of it. POLK COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A 71-year-old man died after his kayak capsized in the Des Moines River north of Des Moines Sunday, according to KCCI-TV. Two friends were kayaking, and the one who was in the lead turned around to see his friend’s kayak had capsized. Officials say it could be a possible drowning, but it‘s unknown if the man had a medical condition prior to his kayak capsizing. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – Waterloo Police responded to a report of shots fired early Sunday morning, according to KCRG-TV. When officers arrived they found a 55-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital, where he died. The death is under investigation. JONES COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The Anamosa State Penitentiary was placed on restricted movement after several altercations Sunday. WHO-TV reports inmates were confined to their cells following fights that took place around 7 a.m. No staff members were hurt, but some minor injuries were treated on inmates. MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – The Mason City Disc Golf club held their second-annual Ice Bowl tournament over the weekend, according to KIMT-TV. Approximately 40 players from Minnesota and Iowa participated while raising funds and food for the local food bank. Over $1,800 and 900 pounds of food were raised. The biggest challenge? Players keeping their footing in icy slush.

LECLAIRE, IA (IRN) – A vehicular homicide case against a man who crashed his SUV into a group of motorcyclists, killing two and injuring another, has been closed because the suspect has died. WQAD-TV reports 52-year-old Darryl Wilson had drugs and alcohol in his system. MARSHALLTOWN, IA (IRN) – Fire crews in Marshalltown worked to put out a fire at a meat processing plant Saturday morning. WHO-TV reports the fire happened at the JBS Swift & Co. plant around 10:30 a.m. Crews say when they arrived on scene they had to put out a large flammable gas-fed fire at the methane collection lagoon. Nobody was injured. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – People walked up and down the sidewalks around Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids Friday protesting the layoffs of 63 custodians. KCRG-TV reports protesters held signs saying “save our custodians” and held up brooms and dustpans. The company is laying off custodians who are covered under a collective bargaining agreement and hiring subcontractors. COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA (IRN) – A Council Bluffs mother has been charged after leaving her 12-year-old son along an I-80 exit before school. The Daily Nonpareil reports that 33-year-old Shameka King faces child endangerment and abandonment charges. The boy says his mother left him after he got out of the car over an argument about which shoes to wear to school. The boy had no money or food. The mother verified the boy’s account, asking police, “What am I supposed to do? Be late for work?”
