SIOUX CITY, IA (IRN) – A man has been charged after Sioux City police say he shot a water pipe in a hotel room, flooding two floors. The Sioux City Journal reports 30-year-old Brett Anderson was inside a Super 8 Hotel room Friday when he accidentally fired his gun. No injuries were reported. Anderson was arrested and charged with reckless use of a firearm. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Authorities are investigating an explosion and fire at a University of Iowa owned apartment that left one person dead. KCCI-TV reports police are investigating a single fatality, and a State Fire Marshall’s office investigator was at the scene. Authorities aren’t releasing the name of the victim. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Rescue crews recovered a body from the Des Moines River on Thursday, according to WHO-TV. A witness spotted the body hung on debris at the Southeast 14th Street bridge. Authorities say it is the body of an adult male from Des Moines. The State Medical Examiner’s office is working to identify the body. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The possibility of an American Indian burial site in Iowa may require relocation of a crude oil pipeline route which would further delay the beginning of construction in the only one of four states where work hasn’t yet begun. KCRG-TV reports the Dakota Access pipeline passes through the Big Sioux Wildlife Management area and Standing Rock Sioux Tribe leaders say there is a burial site in the way. A stop work order has been issued until the issue can be resolved. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – The first traveling exhibit to showcase Major League Baseball memorabilia will make six stops during the 2016 baseball season, and the very first stop is in Davenport. This is the first time the Baseball Hall of Fame has taken its show on the road. The tour, called “We Are Baseball,” will feature a new IMAX movie about the past, present and future of baseball; plus artifacts from some of the most memorable moments in baseball history.

NEWTON, IA (IRN) – An Iowa couple faces child endangerment and drug charges after police say they were caught riding in a vehicle driven by a 13-year-old. The Newton Daily News reports that 51-year-old Paul Deaton and 48-year-old Jacqualine Deaton, of Colfax, were arrested Sunday. A Jasper County sheriff’s deputy noticed a heavy odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, and when stopped Paul Deaton reached behind a seat and grabbed a pipe along with four grams of marijuana. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa teenagers convicted of murder will no longer face life-without-parole sentences, after the Iowa Supreme Court ruled today that the sentence constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. The Des Moines Register reports Justice Brent Appel wrote in a majority opinion that locking young killers away permanently is simply too “speculative” when they have not been given any chance to show rehabilitation in prison. MORSE, IA (IRN) – One person was killed and another injured after a semi collided with a tractor Thursday afternoon just outside of Morse. The Iowa State Patrol reports a tractor traveling west turned left in front of a semi traveling east, causing the collision. The tractor driver was ejected and killed. The driver of the semi was transported to an area hospital with injuries. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Bar staff at D.C.’s Bar in downtown Iowa City tell police that as they tried to remove a drunk man making comments against homosexuals from the bar, he reached for a gun. KCRG-TV reports officers arrived at the scene Wednesday night to find 37-year-old Jason Bason pinned to the ground by bar staff. His handgun was on the ground next to him. BETTENDORF, IA (IRN) – An Iowa man is accused of threatening to post nude photos online unless the woman in the photos gave him money and sex. WQAD-TV reports 30-year-old Bradley Richard Williams of La Porte City was arrested Wednesday after his alleged victim showed threatening messages from him to police. Williams is charged with extortion. ATLANTIC, IA (IRN) – Heavy rains hit much of Iowa yesterday, and caused some street flooding in Atlantic, prompting at least one rescue. WHO-TV reports a woman had to be pulled from her car at an intersection where water was several feet deep. She’s OK. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Soon, passengers traveling along Interstate 35 through six states will see a lusher refuge and more food for bees and butterflies in the hopes of helping the insects boost their declining populations, according to KCCI-TV. That 1,500-mile stretch of road from northern Minnesota to southern Texas is a flyway for monarch butterflies that migrate between Mexico and Canada.

PITTSBURGH, PA (IRN) – A judge has imposed a life sentence on a Pittsburgh man convicted of killing two of his next-door neighbors, the sisters of an Iowa state lawmaker. KWWL-TV reports 45-year-old Allen Wade was convicted Monday of shooting 38-year-old Sarah Wolfe and 44-year-old Susan Wolfe while burglarizing their home in February 2014. DENISON, IA (IRN) – Winds gusting to 87 mph knocked over train cars and toppled trees in western Iowa early this morning, according to KCCI-TV. Crawford County emergency management coordinator Greg Miller says 17 double-stacked container cars were knocked over and are blocking two sets of tracks west of Westside. The 87 mph gust was reported at the Denison Municipal Airport around 2:15 a.m. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – Four people were arrested Wednesday in Davenport after authorities found marijuana, marijuana candies and psychedelic mushrooms at two residences. WQAD-TV reports cash, scales, packaging materials and a ledger were also found, along with a list of names and dollar amounts. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – An Iowa Department of Transportation driving examiner forced a customer to view sexually explicit images during an exam and then threatened her to keep quiet. KCCI-TV reports 60-year-old John Wayne Alexander faces charges after the woman complained Alexander made her pull into a parking lot so he could have a cigarette, then he got out his cellphone and showed her sexually explicit photos and videos of himself for nearly 20 minutes. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Police have made an arrest in the death of a 65-year-old man earlier this month. Charles Wesley Brown died about a week after he was assaulted while riding his bicycle. A witness said she saw two men get out of their car and attack Brown for what seemed like no reason. 28-year-old Michael Joseph Scott of Des Moines was charged yesterday with second degree murder. CEDAR FALLS, IA (IRN) – A 19-year-old was killed in a crash yesterday in Cedar Falls after losing control of his motorcycle, according to KWWL-TV. Police say he tried illegally passing two vehicles at high speeds when he lost control and hit the center barrier. Witnesses performed CPR on scene, but he died at a hospital of major head injuries. He wasn’t wearing a helmet. ALTOONA, IA (IRN) – Adventureland’s newest attraction just topped CNN’s list for the “best new U.S. roller coasters in 2016.” “The Monster” is will open at the end of June and features 2,500 feet of steel track. The first 133-foot hill will take passengers down Iowa’s steepest slope at a 101-degree angle, reaching speeds of 65 miles per hour. It will also feature the only negative-G stall loop in the Western Hemisphere, a slow loop which leaves riders with the sensation that they’re falling out of the coaster.

DES MOINES, IA – (IRN) – A Chicago man was booked into the Polk County Jail today on charges related to a drive-by shooting at a cookout earlier this month, according to WHO. Twenty-year-old Devonte Colbert is charged with attempted murder and intimidation with a dangerous weapon. An SUV with three people in it pulled up to the house and started firing. One man was shot, but survived. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A Dubuque man arrested on domestic assault charges choked and beat his girlfriend, according to KDTH-Radio. 27-year-old Christopher Peterson allegedly grabbed her by the throat, took her cell phone when she tried to call 911, then hit her head against a refrigerator, kicked her in the face, head-butted her, and hit her with a folding chair while she was on the ground. Peterson says he only pushed her, and doesn’t know how she received her injuries. WARREN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Emergency crews were called to a fire at a building under construction in Warren County early this morning, according to KCCI-TV. The fire broke out at the Loving Rest Pet Funeral Home. About half of the structure was destroyed before crews could get the fire under control. The cause is unknown, but there was lightning in the area at the time. No one was injured. FRANKLIN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A 5-year-old in Franklin County was severely injured at the hands of her aunt, and the child’s mother says the Iowa Department of Human Services is responsible for putting the child under her aunt’s care. WHO-TV reports the girl is in a coma. Jessica Torres is charged with child endangerment with serious injury and willful injury with serious injury, both Class C felonies. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – An 8-year-old Waterloo girl is recovering after a dog bit off part of her ear. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports Innocence Robertson was playing at a friend’s house when the dog was let out to get a treat. Robertson says the dog came after her and her cousin. She says the dog jumped up, grabbed her head and she fell down. The animal will be euthanized. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A development group wants to build a 29-story high-rise in downtown Des Moines. The Des Moines Register reports Blackbird Investments wants to build the proposed $60 million tower on an empty lot where half of the former Younkers department store was destroyed in a 2014 fire. The plan calls for 220 condos or apartments, 150 hotel rooms and ground-level storefronts. If the tower is built, it will be one of the tallest structures in downtown Des Moines. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Smoking among all adults has reached an all-time low, according to KCCI-TV. Nationally, 17% of adults smoke — down from nearly 21 percent five years ago. Smoking is down 2% among young adults, the biggest decline in the 20 years. Smoking among youth 17 or younger has been cut in half since 2008.

DES MOINES COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A southeast Iowa woman is behind bars following an armed robbery investigation, according to KTVO-TV. Detectives from the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office arrested 20-year-old Abigail Lynn Boyd Monday at her home in Burlington. Boyd was charged for her involvement in an armed robbery in Mediapolis on March 30. BUCHANAN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The Iowa State Patrol is investigating a fatal crash in Buchanan County. KCRG-TV reports the crash happened Monday just west of Independence. One vehicle didn’t stop at a stop sign and crashed into another. The driver of the vehicle that didn’t stop was killed. No names have been released. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Dakota Access officials trying to span a pipeline across Iowa may have hit another snag, according to the Cedar Rapids Gazette. The Iowa Office of the State Archaeologist has received a claim that a historically significant site falls along the proposed path of the pipeline. Iowa State Archaeologist John Doershuk says if the claim is found to be valid, it could force pipeline officials to change course. ALTOONA, IA (IRN) – The FBI is investigating bomb threats made at schools across the country Monday, four of which were in Iowa. KCCI-TV reports the calls could have come from a computer or phone app. No bombs were found, but the threats forced evacuations at Altoona Elementary, Valley High in West Des Moines, Excelsior Elementary in Marion and Tate Alternative High School in Iowa City. Schools in eight states as well as 26 schools in the United Kingdom received similar threats. CLINTON, IA (IRN) – A middle school special education teacher in Clinton has been accused of having sexual contact with a 15-year-old student, according to WQAD-TV. 40-year-old Christopher Nielsen is charged with felony third-degree sexual abuse. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – Two people were shot in the leg in Waterloo, according to KWWL-TV. Police say the victims are a teenage boy and a woman. The two victims were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. A neighbor said she heard 4 or 5 shots fired and then the teenage boy screaming he had been hit. No one has been arrested. FARMINGTON, IA (IRN) – A Farmington high school that’s closing its doors has given college scholarships to its students. The Hawk Eye reports that Harmony High School’s graduating class of 21 students each received a $2,900 scholarship at the graduation ceremony Sunday. Juniors and sophomores will receive more than $2,400 to attend community college when they complete high school. Scholarship funds came from alumni bequests.
