POWESHIEK COUNTY (IRN) – One person died in a crash in Poweshiek County Saturday morning. The Iowa State Patrol reports a motorcycle operated by Jon Gregory Bryan of Indiana rear ended a semi on Interstate 80. He was struck in the roadway by another semi, and was pronounced dead on scene. AMES (IRN) – Several Republican Presidential Candidates were in Ames for the CyHawk series Saturday. Former President Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Ohio businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum were at the game. The Iowa Hawkeyes won 20-13 over the Cyclones. DES MOINES (IRN) – The Des Moines City Council will vote to hold a special election for a new councilmember. KCCI-TV reports that on tonight’s agenda, the council will consider a special election to fill a seat vacated by Indira Sheumaker. The first-term councilmember resigned after failing to appear at a meeting since March.

GRINNELL (IRN) – Two people were killed and another was injured in a two-vehicle crash in Grinnell on Thursday. WHO-13 reports the Grinnell Fire Department responded to a report of a two car crash. When first responders arrived, they found two vehicles had crashed into the southeast ditch of an intersection. Among the deceased were 45 year old Ana Ramierz-Avalos and Maria Gracia-Alcocer of Marshalltown. The Iowa State Patrol believes a vehicle driven by Earl Weaver of Conway, South Carolina failed to yield at a stop sign. IOWA (IRN) – Drought is worsening still across the vast majority of Iowa. The U.S. Drought Monitor Report shows 91% of the state is in at least some category of drought, and one-fourth of the state is now rated severe — especially in the eastern half of the state. IOWA (IRN) – A surge in gas prices has left many Iowans caught off guard. The Des Moines Register reports that AAA had an average price per gallon at $3.75 on Friday, an unusual jump for September. A reduction in production from OPEC and a cost increase per barrel of oil has impacted some of the increases. AMES (IRN) – It’s CyHawk day as the two biggest schools in the state clash on the gridiron. The Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones renew their rivalry this afternoon at Jake Trice Stadium. The home team is aiming to start a winning streak against their in-state rivals after dropping six in a row from 2015-2021, and finally toppling the Hawks 10-7 last year in Iowa City.

LOVILIA (IRN) – A Des Moines man reported missing in August with medical concerns was found dead by police Wednesday. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office was called to a Lovilia farm property located in southern Marion County in regards to a vehicle that had been located in a creek. Responding deputies located the vehicle on a rural portion of the property and it was identified as a green 2007 Ford Focus belonging to Larry Dean Freeborn Sr. It was determined that a deceased individual was present and that Larry Sr. had previously been reported missing to the Des Moines Police Department in August 2023 with concerning medical issues. DAVENPORT (IRN) – A partial building collapse in Davenport was caused by the removal of brick and inadequate shoring, according to an investigation. The Des Moines Register reports a 113 page report by two engineering companies also blamed an inadequate oversight of repairs and history of improper maintenance. Three people died in the apartment collapse earlier this year. DES MOINES (IRN) – Governor Kim Reynolds announced $5 million in funding for Iowa’s food banks. At the World Food Prize Thursday, the Governor discussed the support for four different Iowa facilities, according to WHO-13. TRURO (IRN) – The coach behind one of the biggest upsets in NCAA Tournament history has now made it to his Iowa high school’s wall of pride. Tobin Anderson was the coach of Farleigh Dickenson when they upset Purdue in the first round of March Madness this past spring. KCCI-TV reports his former high school, Interstate 35, has added him to their wall of pride.

DES MOINES (IRN) – A Des Moines city councilwoman who hadn’t been to a meeting in months has resigned. WHO-13 reports Indira Sheumaker submitted a letter via family to leave her position. Mayor Frank Cownie had sent a letter to Sheumaker about not attending any meetings since March 6, and had received no response in August. DES MOINES (IRN) – A Polk County judge denied a motion for mistrial for a teen accused of killing two others in a shooting. KCCI TV reports Preston Walls defense team made the motion after they believed a police witness made inappropriate comments toward the jury about Walls. The teenager is accused of killing Rashad Carr and Gionni Dameron at a Des Moines education center this past January. The trial will continue. AMES (IRN) – Five athletes connected to several gambling charges at Iowa and Iowa State have entered guilty pleas. The Des Moines Register reports Cyclones Hunter Dekkers, Dodge Sauser, and Jacob Remsburg, and Hawkeyes Aaron Blom and Gehrig Christensen, all pled guilty to underage gambling Wednesday. The five had charges of tampering with records dropped, and each will pay a fin of $645.

DAVENPORT (IRN) – The owner of an Iowa apartment building that collapsed earlier this year is suing an engineering company for not warning about how unsound the facility was structurally. The Quad City Times reported Andrew Wold is taking Select Structural Engineering to court for the collpased apartment building in Davenport. Three men died and a woman lost a leg as part of the incident. AMES (IRN) – At least three Republican presidential candidates announced plans to attend this weekend’s Cy-Hawk game. KCCI-TV reports former President Donald Trump, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson are going to meet with potential voters at the Iowa-Iowa State football game in Ames on Saturday. IOWA CITY (IRN) – An Iowa Hawkeye wrestler is collecting items to support those impacted by deadly wildfires in Hawaii. KCRG reports Nanea Estrella is a native of the country and is holding a drive for supplies to support her native country. She’s also been working to spread awareness on campus.
