WEST DES MOINES (IRN) – A Des Moines man died in a motorcycle crash that ended following an attempted traffic stop by police. Anthony Overton, 25, allegedly sped away from police after a West Des Moines officer attempted to stop his motorcycle that did not apparently have license plates. Police allege that Overton sped away at a high rate of speed, but they did not engage in a pursuit due to public safety concerns. Witnesses say Overton ran a red light and was broadsided by a car traveling on Grand Avenue. DES MOINES (IRN) – A new property tax break that passed in the Iowa Legislature will cause a crunch on local budgets, according to the Legislative Services Agency. An Axios report says the non-partisan agency estimates $57 million in lost revenue, starting July 1st, for cities and counties due to legislation that passed nearly unanimously near the end of the 2023 Legislative Session. The bill was proposed due to rapidly increasing property assessments reported this past spring. WASHINGTON D.C. (IRN) – The Biden administration announced a $42.5 billion plan to connect all Americans to high speed internet by 2030, and the state of Iowa will receive close to $415 billion of those funds. An estimated 1.3 million Iowa homes have an Internet connection, leaving more than 84,000 without, according to the Des Moines Register report. IOWA CITY (IRN) – Smoke from Canadian wildfires continue to engulf much of the state today, causing dangerous air quality for many across Iowa. The Iowa DNR has issued an air quality alert. Readings have become particularly dangerous in the eastern half of the state as hazy conditions caused by smoke will make it difficult for many to be outdoors for prolonged periods of time.

DES MOINES (IRN) – The trial of a men accused of killing someone while street racing in Des Moines has been delayed. Keith Jones was racing on Fleur Drive on December 13th, when he lost control and collided with a vehicle. Marcos Faguada was killed in that collision. The trial date has been moved to September 11th. IOWA CITY (IRN) – A third arrest has been made in connection to an Iowa City shooting that happened in May. KCRG-TV reports 24-year-old Narada Poole has been charged with control of a firearm by a felon. He joins 22-year-old Marquel Poole and 22-year-old Alexander Voudhivong in facing criminal charges for shooting an individual on May 13th, 2023. That victim has survived the alleged attack. IOWA CITY (IRN) – One of the highest possible honors for female athletes in the country has been added to the collection of the remarkable Caitlin Clark. The Iowa Hawkeyes junior guard won the 2023 Honda Cup Award and was named the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year Monday night. Clark was chosen by a vote of administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools across all 12 sanctioned sports in the country. Clark became the first player in Division I women’s basketball history to record more than 1,000 points and 300 assists in the same season this past winter and was fastest Division I player (men’s or women’s) to reach 1,500 career points over the last 20 seasons. WEST DES MOINES (IRN) – Miss Iowa and Miss Iowa Teen 2023 were selected this past weekend. Grace Lynn Keller of Coralville was crowned as Miss Iowa USA and Madeline Erickson of Ankeny was chosen as Miss Iowa Teen.

ALBIA (IRN) – The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Albia Police Department are seeking details about a possible suspect in what they are calling a homicide. Albia resident Daniel Gundrum, 49, was found following a 911 call for a disturbance and shooting just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Despite life-saving efforts by officers and medical technicians, Gundrum succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy will be conducted by the Office of the State Medical Examiner to determine the exact cause and manner of death. Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the Albia Police Department at (641) 932-7815. DAVENPORT (IRN) – While the vast majority of Iowans grapple with drought, many received need relief with heavy rain over the weekend, but that came with severe weather as well. The National Weather Service reports several instances of hail in Wapello and Van Buren Counties, and a brief EF0 tornado formed in Davenport overnight Saturday. Several areas in the Quad Cities and in northeast Iowa also received wind damage. ALTOONA (IRN) – More than 50 Iowans were sickened at a recent wedding, and a follow up food inspection showed concerns with the caterer who provided the meals. According to the Des Moines Register, the bride contacted Fireside Grille in Altoona, and following that meeting, reached out to the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals. The agency cited five violations relating to improper storage of food at warmer than safe temperatures. CLIVE (IRN) – Three Iowans won big prizes in just a two day span, according to the Iowa Lottery. A $2 million Powerball prize was purchased in Ottumwa, a $390,000 InstaPlay game was won in Cascade, and the $1 million Mega Millions jackpot was won with a ticket purchased in Davenport.

SPIRIT LAKE (IRN) – Two northwest Iowa school districts have pulled plans to arm staff members. WHO-13 reports the Cherokee and Spirit Lake Schools had approved new policies that would have allowed select, certified staff members to be armed on campus, but insurance providers wouldn’t cover either district under the policy. DES MOINES (IRN) – Iowa Democratic Leadership anticipates a special session could be called this summer for Republicans to pass abortion restrictions. The Iowa Capital Dispatch reports that Party Chairperson Rita Hart and Senator Sarah Trone Garriott both expressed concerns about how far the majority party will go not only in outlawing abortions in Iowa, but how they may also retaliate against the Iowa Supreme Court for their 3-3 split decision earlier this month. DES MOINES (IRN) – An American Airlines flight headed for North Carolina was forced to return to the Des Moines International Airport shortly after takeoff. KCCI-TV reports Flight 2488 had 136 passengers on board Friday morning. It’s the second time this week an American Airlines flight was recalled shortly after takeoff heading for Charlotte — both for potential mechanical issues.

DES MOINES (IRN) – Governor Kim Reynolds has announced a change in leadership at the Department of Education, appointing McKenzie Snow, presently Deputy Secretary of Education in the Commonwealth of Virginia, to replace Chad Aldis as department director. Aldis, who was named director in March of this year, has resigned for family reasons. Snow’s appointment as Director of the Iowa Department of Education is effective Monday, June 26. Aldis will remain through June 30 to assist with the transition. SHEFFIELD (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation and Iowa State Patrol are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Sheffield. The two departments reported that deputies with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office were called to a domestic dispute on June 20th. Upon arrival, deputies encountered 30-year-old Matt Davis of Hampton, brandishing a handgun. Davis was arguing with family members, who had locked themselves inside the house and called 911. Deputies ordered Davis to drop the gun, he refused, and walked toward police, pointing the gun at a passing vehicle and then officers, who subsequently fired at Davis, who died at the scene. No officers were injured. BLOOMFIELD (IRN) – Extreme speeding is believed to be the cause behind a chase and fatal motorcycle crash in southern Iowa. KCCI-TV reports that on May 20th, the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office claims Reese Jones, Lane Spurgeon and Jarrett Rea were riding on motorcycles in speeds approaching 200 miles per hour, which police say is backed up by video recordings. Jones and Spurgeon fled police during an attempted stop, with the former dying after allegedly running a stop sign and colling with a pickup truck; the latter has been arrested and charged with eluding. DES MOINES (IRN) – Drought is rapidly intensifying across the state, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor Report. Nearly 100% of Iowa is rated as abnormally dry or worse, and 83% of the state considered to be in drought — or an estimated 2.17 million residents. The next best chance for widespread rainfall across the state may also bring severe weather and large hail this Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
