DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A winter storm watch has been issued for much of Iowa from 12 p.m. Wednesday until 9 a.m. Thursday. This system will bring a swath of heavy snow across the state. Snow will start early afternoon Wednesday and continue through early Thursday morning, with the heaviest falling Wednesday night. WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Police are investigating an attempted murder-suicide in West Des Moines. Police responded to a 911 call from a woman saying that she had been shot by her boyfriend. When they arrived at the scene, police found the injured woman with a gunshot wound to her head and a man who was deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. The woman was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Evidence indicates that the shooting was an attempted murder of the woman before the man turned the weapon on himself. CHICKASAW COUNTY, IA (IRN) – An Iowa man is facing multiple charges, including vehicular homicide, for a 2022 OWI-related crash that killed his 18-year-old son. A traffic stop was attempted in September 2022 by a Chickasaw County Deputy Sheriff. 38-year-old Curtis Allen Williams refused to stop. The pursuit reached speeds over 105 mph when Williams failed to negotiate a curve, causing the vehicle to roll. His 18-year-old son, Jaxon, was pronounced dead at the scene. DURANT, IA (IRN) – An Iowa woman is dead after a head-on crash with a FedEx truck in Cedar County. The crash happened on Saturday near Durant. A car was driving eastbound on I-80, and a Fedex truck was heading westbound. The car ended up hitting the truck head-on. Rebecca McClaine, from Bettendorf, was driving the car and died. She wasn’t wearing her seatbelt. IOWA COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Multiple spotters reported a tornado on the ground in Iowa County around Williamsburg on Monday around 2 p.m. The National Weather Service confirmed that the tornado was an EF1 with maximum windspeeds of around 90 mph. The tornado traveled less than 5 miles and was on the ground for about 8 minutes. No injuries were reported. This is the first tornado in Iowa in January since 1967.

AMES, IA (IRN) – 27-year-old Anthony Garner of Alabama was booked into the Story County jail Saturday evening in connection to a shooting at the Quality Inn in Ames. Garner is facing five charges, including attempted murder. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A man is dead after losing control of his truck that crashed into a Des Moines building Saturday morning. Police say the truck was traveling northbound on Keo Way when it left the roadway and rolled several times before crashing into the building. The 26-year-old man was thrown from the truck. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – One person was arrested in downtown Iowa City on Saturday after a report of gunshots near the Pedestrian Mall. Police arrived and were able to take the alleged shooter into custody. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – As roundabouts have become more mainstream in American city planning and road design, Cedar Rapids is planning to almost double their number in the city by the end of 2024. Currently, Iowa’s second-largest city has 12 roundabouts. CORALVILLE, IA (IRN) – The Hawkeye Wrestling Club hosted their 12th Annual Arctic Plunge event at Brown Deer Golf Course Saturday afternoon. The goal of the fundraiser is to support the club’s athletes and train them for world Olympic titles. The club has raised around $120,000 already, and the goal is to break the $188,000 record.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines man is charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 45-year-old man who was found dead at a south side motel. Police have charged 50-year-old Surfun Julise Boens with the crime. Evidence shows Boens shot the victim, causing the man’s death. Boens lived with the victim in a room at Fleur Lodge. Surveillance footage shows Boens was the last person to be with the victim when he was known to be alive. MONTICELLO, IA (IRN) – A man accused of breaking into someone’s Monticello home was shot and killed on Wednesday morning, according to Monticello Police. Pattrick O’Brine, 30, was shot and killed at a home in Monticello. Police say the resident called 911 to report a break-in. Before officers arrived, that person armed themselves and shot the intruder. The 44-year-old resident was home with his 10-year-old son at the time and both were not injured. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg were officially sworn into their second full term in office Friday morning. “I am so very proud to serve as your Governor, “said Reynolds. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Prices are going down for University of Iowa football season tickets. Staff say prices for general public season tickets for the seven home football games next season range from $335 to $425 compared to last season’s $345-$450 range, depending on seat location. The Hawkeyes won five of their final six games to close the 2022 season, including a 21-0 win over Kentucky in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowans packed the statehouse Thursday for a chance to share their thoughts on Governor Reynold’s school choice bill. Dozens spoke before the 90-minute hearing ended, with dozens more still waiting in line. Hundreds waited for the chance to speak online. If passed, the plan would deposit $7,598 into an education savings account each year for any K-12 student who switches from public to private school. Critics say it will hurt public schools. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Two new bills introduced in the Iowa House seek to limit what teachers can say about sexual orientation and gender identity. They are similar to the controversial one critics call the “Don’t Say Gay Law” in Florida. WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Parents of female wrestlers at Valley High School are upset after a confrontation in the girl’s locker room on Dec. 9. They say their daughters told them the male coaches of the girls basketball team went into the locker room while they were in there. BLACK HAWK COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The Black Hawk Co. Sheriff’s Office teamed up with Lark Brewing to release a beer to raise funds for the upcoming U.S. Police Canine Association Narcotics Detection Trials. The beer is called “Deputy Jarvis Golden Ale” in honor of the Sheriff’s Office canine. The detection trials are hosted in Black Hawk Co. from March 26-28. Partial proceeds raised from the limited edition beer will be donated by Lark Brewing to the Black Hawk Co. Sheriff’s Office to cover any hosting costs.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines mother faces charges after her infant child nearly died of an apparent drug overdose. Court documents say Cainyona Gates Thomas’ 1-year-old daughter needed three doses of Narcan after she brought the child into a hospital on New Year’s Day. The child was unresponsive. Documents say Gate Thomas admitted to smoking Percocet with others that day. She is charged with neglect of a dependent person. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Just one day after Governor Reynolds announced her new school voucher bill, lawmakers laid the groundwork to pass the legislation. This will be Reynolds’ third attempt to pass private school vouchers, with this plan allocating $7,600 of public tax dollars to private school families per child. The plan will be phased in over three years when every child in Iowa would be eligible, with no income limit. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Des Moines Police Department is asking for help to identify two distinctive trucks and their owners, which are possibly connected to the harassment of an elderly couple. Police say the elderly couple on the south side of Des Moines has been repeatedly tormented by someone, including with fireworks aimed at their home. The couple is in hiding. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – On January 7th, emergency crews responded to a structure fire at the Farmhouse Restaurant in Cedar Rapids. Officials determined that the fire was intentionally set. Yesterday the Linn County Sheriff’s Office arrested 43-year-old Heidi Liegl. She was charged with Arson in the First Degree and Insurance Fraud. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa’s Attorney General is suing the business at the center of a massive workplace explosion in Marengo in December. At least ten people were injured on December 8th after an explosion at C6-Zero, a biodiesel facility that recycles roof shingles. Attorney General Brenna Bird filed the suit on Wednesday, demanding the company comply with an emergency order from Iowa’s Department of Natural Resources and Iowa laws to prevent the “imminent threat to public health and the environment.”
