IOWA (IRN) – A judge has ruled in favor of several families that masks should be required in classrooms to protect students with disabilities and health conditions. The lawsuit came as a response to the passing of Governor Reynolds pandemic era law in 2021 that states Iowa school districts cannot issue mask mandates unless they’re needed to comply with other federal or state laws. Families argued that the rule violated the federal disability rights law by denying reasonable accommodations for their children. FAIRFIELD, IA (IRN) – Newly filed court documents show investigators believe bad grades may have been the motive for the murder of Fairfield Spanish teacher Nohema Graber. One of the two students charged in the murder had a meeting with Graber to discuss his poor Spanish grade. GRIMES, IA (IRN) – Polk County deputies are investigating a crash in Grimes on Highway 141. One person died in the crash. Two vehicles were involved in the crash. In each vehicle, the driver was the only occupant. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – Georgia-Pacific has announced that they will be closing their Dubuque corrugated facility on December 31st. Approximately 85 jobs will be impacted by the closure. Officials say that the decision to close the plant was based on their ability to stay competitive in the area. WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Hy-Vee announced Tuesday over 285 store locations will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24, this year. This is the first time Hy-Vee will close stores in its 92 year history, as a way to show appreciation for its workers.

POLK COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A teenager is dead after being struck on Interstate 80 in Polk County on Monday. According to troopers, a tractor-trailer was traveling westbound on Interstate 80 when 18-year-old Davis O. Cooper entered the roadway. He was struck and killed. Cooper was parked at a convenience store nearby before entering the interstate on foot. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force executed a three-day operation in the Des Moines Metro. The operation targeted individuals seeking underage juveniles for sex. Eight arrests resulted from the operation. Three of the individuals are from Des Moines, two from Ankeny, one from Polk City, one from Ames, and one from Indianola. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A woman was taken to the hospital after a shooting in Des Moines on Monday. She was shot in the abdomen. OSKALOOSA, IA (IRN) – Shortly after midnight on Monday, police were dispatched to a residence hall at William Penn University for a report of a stabbing. Crews found a 21-year-old victim outside the building with a laceration to his lower neck. He told police the man that stabbed him went by the name Z-Bo and which dorm to find him in. 22-year-old Zyrick Knight was arrested. The fight reportedly started while Knight was trying to sleep while the victim and his friends played loud music in the common area outside Knight’s room. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Today’s episode of Family Feud on Fox features a family from Cedar Rapids. The Loefflers caught say it was a surreal, long day of filming, but lots of fun.

DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – Police have released the name of the man who died after exchanging gunfire with officers Sunday following a vehicle and foot chase. The Iowa State Patrol has identified Kenneth Jamel Carrol, 24 of Davenport as the involved individual. An autopsy will be done at the Office of the Iowa State Medical Examiner. Officers tried to pull over his vehicle but he didn’t stop. BUCHANAN COUNTY (IRN) – A missing four-year-old child reportedly last seen in the front yard of his residence in Buchanan County has been found deceased in a neighbor’s pond. FORT DODGE, IA (IRN) – Fort Dodge Police are investigating after finding two men dead in a home. Police say the men were discovered by someone who entered their home Saturday morning. Police haven’t shared the identity of the two men and their cause of death is unknown at this time. JOHNSON COUNTY, IA (IRN) – One person is dead after a crash in Johnson County Saturday morning. The victim’s vehicle crashed into a semi-trailer blocking the southbound lane as it was completing a U-turn. AMES, IA (IRN) – The Big 12 has reached an agreement on a six-year contract extension with ESPN and Fox worth more than $2 billion that will keep the conference’s media rights with those networks through the 2030-31 college sports seasons.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Several high school students in Des Moines who consumed Delta-8 THC gummies became seriously sick. The gummy has 100mg of THC per gummy. Five students from a metro area school consumed anywhere from half a gummy bear to two full gummy bears. Two of the students who ate two full gummy bears were sent to the ER. Common symptoms from all five of the students include high heart rates, anxiety, nausea, and severe paranoia. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Democrats are expected to learn if they will remain first in the nation for future caucuses in December. The Democratic National Committee Rules & Bylaws Committee will discuss, and come to a decision, when the committee meets December 1 to 3 in Washington, D.C. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – People across Iowa and the U.S. are flocking to lottery retailers ahead of tonight’s Powerball drawing. The estimated jackpot is around $800 million, the second-largest prize in the game’s history and the fifth-largest in North American lottery history. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) Friday night, Iowa’s section of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) recognized Cedar Rapids for having the best water in Iowa. Every year, AWWA holds a blind tasting competition to determine which Iowa community provides the best-tasting drinking water. Entries were judged by a panel of local media personalities based on appearance, odor, taste, and after-taste.

NEWTON, IA (IRN) – An anonymous threat was made online Thursday night toward a Newton school. The district’s superintendent said the threat mentioned Berg Middle School. Police are investigating. POLK COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A hearing will be held today to revisit Iowa’s stalled fetal heartbeat law. Gov. Kim Reynolds wants the court to lift the injunction against the measure, which would further limit abortion access in the state. The law was passed in 2018. It outlaws abortion at six weeks, which is around the time a fetus’s heartbeat can first be detected. A Polk County judge ordered an injunction of the law. However, Reynolds says a recent ruling by the Iowa Supreme Court caused her to request the injunction be lifted. MARION, Iowa (KCRG) – Marion police have arrested two teenagers, and are pursuing charges against a third, for a string of burglaries and vandalism in Marion in July. The teens allegedly stole cans of spray paint from a business and used them to paint graffiti on several cars, buildings, and street signs. At least one firearm was stolen from a vehicle. Some of the graffiti included swastikas, the words “I am a Nazi,” and “KKK.” IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz apologized Wednesday for publicly criticizing a reporter who asked him about his decision to keep son Brian Ferentz as offensive coordinator given the Hawkeyes’ offense’s poor performance this season. The reporter said no offense was taken. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The latest report from the U.S. Drought Monitor shows expanding drought conditions across the state of Iowa. The entire state remains at least in the “abnormally dry” category, with nearly 88% of the state in a moderate drought.
