DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A 23-year-old woman has died from a gunshot injury, according to Des Moines police. Two people have been arrested in connection with the homicide. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – Davenport police arrested a man after being pursued by multiple police departments. Rock Island police responded to a report of a man armed with a handgun. He fled in a vehicle over the Centennial Bridge into Davenport, and officers saw him throw a gun into the river. 24-year-old Deveil Westerfield was arrested by police. He’s a convicted felon and prohibited from having firearms. HAMPTON, IA (IRN) – A derailed train spilled asphalt into a creek early Monday morning in the northern Iowa town of Hampton. At about 3:30 a.m., 44 Union Pacific train cars derailed on a bridge over a creek in Hampton. No one was injured and the cause of the train derailment is under investigation. CHARITON, IA (IRN) – The Humane Society of Lucas County announced it will be closing its doors. The decision was made due to expensive changes that are needed to comply with state regulations, low funding, and not enough volunteer staff. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Ape Initiative on Des Moines’ southeast side was vandalized twice in one week. It’s the world’s only research center dedicated to studying bonobo apes. The bonobos were safe and secure during the incident.

LOWDEN, IA (IRN) – One person was killed and another injured after a crash involving two motorcycles near Lowden in Cedar County Sunday. Both motorcycles were traveling eastbound on Old Lincoln Highway when the motorcycles left the road. One hit a traffic sign killing the driver. The other motorcyclist sustained minor injuries. ​​DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A teenager was shot in the foot early Saturday afternoon on the southeast side of Des Moines. The police department said over 150 shooting incidents have occurred in Des Moines this year. Approximately 25 percent of the shootings involved individuals under the age of 18 being injured or killed. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A bird strike caused a passenger jet to have to abort a landing and declare an emergency landing Sunday night at the Dubuque Regional Airport. The American Airlines flight from Chicago O’Hare into Dubuque struck a bird as it was approaching to land. That forced the pilots to pull back up and circle back to try to land again. The airport declared an emergency landing as a precaution, putting emergency vehicles on standby. Pilots were able to land the plane safely a few minutes later. WAUKEE, IA (IRN) – With an average of seven people moving to Waukee each day, one of the metro’s biggest developers sees an opportunity. West Des Moines-based Hubbell Realty Co. has seven housing projects in different stages of planning and construction slated to be built in Waukee over the next two years. Hubbell plans to build nearly 1,050 units, including single-family rental homes, apartments, a senior living facility and condos.

WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – A boy is recovering in the hospital after being shot multiple times in Waterloo Thursday evening. Police say the boy was shot in the arm and back and was taken to the hospital by private car. BUENA VISTA COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services announced on Friday that the first confirmed case of West Nile Virus in a human in the state this year has been reported. The victim is a middle-aged adult out of Buena Vista County. HHS says that six Iowans were diagnosed in 2021. None of them died from the virus. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Labor Day weekend is one of the deadliest holidays in the State. As of Thursday, Sept. 1, the Iowa State Patrol reports there have been 220 deaths on the road so far this year. The State Patrol is worried that the number could increase like it’s done on past Labor Day weekends. They say slow down, and pay attention to the road. U.S.A. (IRN) -The university presidents who oversee the College Football Playoff voted Friday to expand the postseason model for determining a national champion from four to 12 teams no later than the 2026 season.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines Police Officers are looking for a hit-and-run driver who left a pedestrian in critical condition Thursday night in Des Moines. The 57-year-old man who was hurt is in the hospital in critical condition. Police are asking for help from the public to find and report the blue Buick with damage to the front-end. CLARKSVILLE, IA (IRN) – A Clarksville police officer is facing multiple sex exploitation charges. Police say Mike Tobin, former police officer for the City of Clarksville, showed a minor evidence in a pending court case. Pieces of that evidence included sexually explicit images and videos of nude minors. ​​DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Polk County judge said the fired former director of the Iowa Department of Human Services does not have a wrongful termination claim. The judge dismissed Jerry Foxhoven’s lawsuit this week against Gov. Kim Reynolds. Foxhoven said he was fired in 2019 for refusing to continue paying a governor’s aide with federal Medicaid money. The judge found that because Foxhoven served at the governor’s discretion, there is no basis for wrongful termination. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a harvest proclamation on Thursday. The proclamation allows vehicles that are carrying corn, soybeans, hay, straw, silage and stover to be overweight without a permit. The proclamation goes into effect immediately and will be in place through October 1, 2022. OTTUMWA, IA (IRN) – A truck, three trailers and thousands of dollars worth of pork were stolen Thursday morning from the JBS plant in Ottumwa. The pork was inside the trailers, which police found empty and abandoned a short time later.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa’s prisons are seeing the recidivism rate drop for the second year in a row, with just 37% of convicted prisoners reoffending after their release. That is a 1.7% decrease from last year. That means fewer convicted criminals are returning to prison. LARRABEE, IA (IRN) – Five workers were injured in the collapse of a building that was under construction in the northwest Iowa community of Larrabee. The workers were building a frame for a machine shop when the structure collapsed. Larrabee is a city of 120 people about 50 miles northeast of Sioux City. UNION COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The Union County Sheriff’s Department needs help finding a man they said is linked to vehicle thefts in six different counties. They say Daniel Floyd Edwards is responsible for a string of motorcycle, car, pick-up, 4-wheeler, tractor, dump truck, and semi thefts in Union, Ringgold, Adams, Adair, Cass and Madison counties. Authorities say Edwards is known to abuse drugs, has violent tendencies, and will drive at recklessly at high speeds. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Board of Directors on the Iowa Finance Authority awarded nearly $10 million dollars in federal housing tax credits to support the construction of 385 affordable rental homes in Iowa. Eleven communities were awarded the funds. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – An Iowa City West freshman hit a perfect drive on the 233 yard par four 21st hole at the Airport National golf course.
