POCAHONTAS COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Dozens of cats and kittens are receiving care after they were rescued from an abandoned home in Pocahontas County. The Animal Rescue League of Iowa’s Mobile Rescue Team was called in by local law enforcement after officers discovered 30 cats and kittens had been left inside the home with no food or water and in filthy conditions. GRUNDY CENTER, IA (IRN) – A man who shot and killed an Iowa State trooper has been sentenced to life in prison. Michael Lang was convicted of first-degree murder, attempted murder and assaulting a police officer in May. Lang shot and killed Trooper Jim Smith in Grundy Center as Smith led a tactical team into a home. Before the shooting, a chase led police there and Lang barricaded himself inside. MENDON, MO (IRN) – An Amtrak train traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago crashed in northern Missouri Monday. Amtrak says the train, eight cars and two locomotives with 243 passengers, crashed in Mendon, Missouri at 1:42 p.m. when it hit a dump truck at a public crossing. The train was headed to Fort Madison, Iowa before reaching its destination in Chicago. Amtrak says at least three people were killed and 50 were injured. MARENGO, IA (IRN) – Authorities are conducting an investigation following the death of a 13-year-old girl at a home in Marengo. Foul play isn’t suspected. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines Police are investigating after an east side convenience store was robbed early Monday morning. It happened at a QuikTrip shortly after 2:30 a.m. The suspect didn’t display a weapon but implied that he had one. No one was injured in the robbery and the suspect fled on a bicycle.

IOWA (IRN) – Average gas prices in Iowa have dropped 9.4 cents in the last week for a state average of $4.62. Prices in Iowa are 33.8 cents higher than a month ago and are $1.70 higher than a year ago. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – An abortion-rights protestor was run over by a truck and another was knocked down while crossing the street in front of the Federal Court building in Cedar Rapids Friday evening. Witnesses say the man drove around two vehicles, red-faced and yelling, when he ran a red light on purpose to strike a group of protestors crossing the street legally in the crosswalk. There will likely be no charges because Iowa has a law that says it is legal to strike protestors with vehicles. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A Dubuque man faces several charges after he barricaded himself in his home and drove his own vehicle through his garage door. Deputies approached Dennis Miller outside his home because he has an active warrant for violating probation. Miller ran inside and wouldn’t come out. Miller then drove a vehicle from inside his garage through the door in an attempt to escape. He ran back into the house, and was taken into custody several hours later. SIOUX CITY, IA (IRN) – A Sioux City man is facing arson charges after authorities say he started a fire at a local convenience store where he was an employee. Orlando Castro has been charged with first-degree arson and second-degree criminal mischief. Authorities allege on June 22 Castro entered the Sam’s Mini-Mart and intentionally started a fire inside the store using its own merchandise. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – A fire destroyed a church on the eastern side of Iowa City on Saturday morning. At around 4:20 a.m. fire department crews were sent to a report of a fire at Iowa City Church of Christ. The building was totally engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa’s Supreme Court overturned a ruling last week, stating the Iowa Constitution does not provide a right to an abortion. That’s green lit the 24-hour waiting period law, and with Friday’s Supreme Court decision from Washington, D.C., that opens the door for Iowa to ban abortions. But as of today, abortions are still legal in Iowa. For that to change, the legislature would have to pass a law and Gov. Kim Reynolds would have to sign it. In order to pass an abortion ban, the Iowa Legislature would have to wait until the next session begins in January. Gov. Reynolds could also call a special session this summer or fall to pass something sooner. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – An abortion-rights protestor’s foot was run over by a truck while crossing the street in front of the Federal Court building in Cedar Rapids Friday evening. The Cedar Rapids Police Department said a group of protestors were legally crossing the street when the traffic lights changed, giving the right of way to vehicles on 8th Ave. A verbal confrontation between a driver and protestors lead to the driver of the truck purposely driving into the protestors. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Hours after the Supreme Court overturned the long-standing Roe v. Wade ruling protecting the right to an abortion, hundreds of Iowans united and protested in opposition of the decision. The demonstrators marched from Des Moines Public Schools’ Central Campus and down Grand Avenue to the governor’s mansion on Terrace Hill. Once the crowd arrived at Terrace Hill, they left their signs of protest atop the fence surrounding the governor’s mansion. GRANT COUNTY, WI (IRN) – Rescue crews recovered the body of 51-year-old Alan Hartig in the Mississippi River on Friday. Hartig went missing on Wednesday after he tried to recover his pontoon boat. Hartig was last seen chasing the boat in shallow waters.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (IRN) – The Supreme Court has ended constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place for nearly 50 years in a decision by its conservative majority to overturn Roe v. Wade. Friday’s outcome is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states. Governor Kim Reynolds says she will continue to work to ban abortions in the state. BURLINGTON, IA (IRN) – The city of Burlington has agreed to pay $5 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit brought by the mother of a man who was shot to death by police. The settlement comes nearly five years after Officer Chris Chiprez shot and killed 27-year-old Marquis Jones. WASHINGTON, D.C. (IRN) – The Senate passed its first major federal gun safety legislation in decades on Thursday night. The deal includes millions of dollars for mental health, school safety and crisis intervention programs and incentives for states. The deal also makes changes to the process when someone ages 18 to 21 goes to buy a gun. The legislation passed in a 65-33 vote. Iowa’s senators, Republican Sen. Joni Ernst and Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley, were split on the decision. Ernst voted in favor of the bill while Grassley voted against it. GRANT COUNTY, WI (IRN) – A Dubuque man is missing in the Mississippi River. Officials say 51-year-old Alan Hartig was in shallow Wisconsin waters on Wednesday when his pontoon boat, which was beached on a sandbar, began drifting down the river. He was last seen pushing the boat in shallow water. KINGS COUNTY, N.Y. (IRN) – Keegan Murray has made Hawkeye history. The Sacramento Kings drafted him 4th overall, making him the highest-drafted player from Iowa. The 6-8″, 225 Murray scored 23.5 points per game last season as a sophomore, leading Iowa to a Big Ten Tournament title. He was named the Big Ten Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and a first team Associated Press All-American.

MASON CITY, IA – A man who vandalized the North Iowa Fairgrounds has received probation. Justin Lee Holt, 45 of Mason City, was sentenced Wednesday to five years of supervised probation and ordered to pay $2,035 in damages. Holt stole a dump truck, damaged an ATM, damaged the Mason City Motor Speedway, broke off doorknobs, broke windows, disconnected phone lines, and stole an automated defibrillator at the Fairgrounds on October 7, 2021. WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Police have made an arrest in connection to a shots fired incident during a carnival at Valley West Mall in West Des Moines last Wednesday night. Police responded to the area for reports of two large fights. Police have arrested a 14-year-old boy in relation to the shooting. ​​DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – American Airlines has announced that they are pulling service from Dubuque in September. They say it’s due to the national shortage in pilots. American Airlines currently has two flights a day from Chicago to Dubuque’s airport. It’s the only legacy airline currently running out of Dubuque. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa’s showcase of local sports history will soon shut its doors for good and move online only. The Iowa Hall of Pride, which is located within the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, is closing on June 30. The Iowa High School Athletics Association cited low museum attendance during the pandemic as the main reason for the closure. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A 99-year-old man in Mount Vernon is spreading joy online, one joke at a time. It started during the pandemic as people were isolated in their homes. Now, nearing 100, Fred Lehman has made a tradition out of making people smile by telling jokes by video on Facebook. His daughter is his videographer.
