DECORAH – A K-9 unit disarmed a Decorah man accused of threatening a deputy with a firearm. KCRG-TV reports that police responded to a home for a welfare check Monday afternoon. The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office reports 29-year-old Jordan Schaller arrived with a loaded shotgun. K-9 Drago bit the man in the hand following attempts by a responding deputy to talk Schaller down. The 29-year-old faces multiple charges. WINTERSET – The Madison County Treasurer has resigned just before a hearing scheduled for her removal. The Des Moines Register reports 37-year-old Amanda DeVos is stepping down, but admitted to no wrongdoing, as was stated in a release by the Madison County Attorney’s Office. DeVos was arrested in January for felonious misconduct in office, theft, fraudulent practices, and tampering with records charges. She’s accused of misallocating $250,000 in government funds and delaying distributions to hte Winterset School system. DES MOINES – The Iowa State Fair announced the top three new foods at the 2025 fair this week. WHO-13 reports the Bacon Chicken Ranch Eggroll, the Three Little Pigs, and The Scotcheroo Shake will compete for the final award. Winn & Sara’s Kitchen won the 2024 prize for best new food with the Bacon Cheeseburger Eggroll.

DES MOINES – The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed a case of measles in an adult resident of Eastern Iowa and is notifying the public of potential exposure locations. Those include Dubuque, Ely, Cedar Rapids, Amana, and North Liberty. The individual is fully vaccinated and has no known link to the previous measles cases in Iowa, nor any recent travel outside the state. Iowa has a total of seven confirmed measles cases in 2025. As of July 8th, a total of 1,288 confirmed measles cases have been reported in the United States. Of these, 92% were unvaccinated, and 8% had received at least one dose of MMR vaccine. DES MOINES – A Democratic U.S. Senator will be visiting the 2025 Iowa State Fair to speak against the policies of Iowa’s congressional delegation. Arizona’s Ruben Gallego is planning a stop on August 8th, according to We Are Iowa TV, before moving to eastern Iowa for a visit to support Iowa Democrats in Davenport. Gallego is attacking Senator Joni Ernst in particular, who is up for re-election in 2026, should she choose to run. IOWA – Rain on and off throughout the week limited farmers to 3.8 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending July 13th, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. Wet conditions made field activities difficult. Topsoil moisture condition rated 6 percent short, 71 percent adequate and 23 percent surplus. Corn silking reached 36 percent, one day behind last year, but one day ahead of normal. Five percent of Iowa’s corn reached the dough stage. Corn condition rated 12 percent fair, 58 percent good and 27 percent excellent. Soybeans blooming reached 54 percent, three days ahead of last year but equal to the five-year average and the condition rated 18 percent fair, 59 percent good and 20 percent excellent.

CLEAR LAKE – A Forest City man accused of fleeing from police died while doing so in Clear Lake early Sunday morning. The Iowa State Patrol reports 22-year-old Zachary Hill was driving a Ford Focus at a high rate of speed and struck a tree. The car then struck an unoccupied house and two parked cars. Hill died from his injuries. IOWA – The number of state-operated beaches with swimming not recommended advisories is up to 14. KCCI-TV reports that Backbone, Beeds Lake, Blue Lake, Bobwhite, Denison, Lake Ahquabi, Lake Darling, Lake Manawa, Lake of Three Fires, McIntosh Woods, Nine Eagles, Pleasant Creek, Prairie Rose, and Union Grove beaches are listed as having high E. coli levels. This is an increase of two additional beaches since the previous week’s testing. DES MOINES REGISTER – An analysis of the budget reconciliation bill passed by Congress and signed by President Donald Trump shows an outsized impact on rural hospitals. The Des Moines Register reports that Iowa could see a nearly $4.5 billion reduction in federal Medicaid spending in rural areas over the next decade, according to a KFF study. The independent research company and the Iowa Hospital Association show that reduction could close multiple rural hospitals in that time frame.

IOWA – Multiple tornado warnings and flash flooding events impacted many locations across the state of Iowa on Friday as an active weather week continued. A flash flood emergency was issued in the Quad Cities and warnings were issued in the Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, and Iowa City metro areas as many communities received at least three inches of heavy rain in just a matter of hours. Some of these locations have seen nearly a foot of rainfall over the last week. River flooding concerns are increasing across the state as well, according to the National Weather Service. Drier conditions will largely remain in place through Monday. DES MOINES – Governor Kim Reynolds anticipates her legislative agenda will continue as planned next January for the second year of the general assembly, despite threats from some representatives in her own party to derail those plans. KCCI-TV reports that Reynolds intends to try to work with lawmakers who have responded harshly to her move to veto a bill restricting eminent domain. The Iowa House has gathered the required signatures to override the veto, however, the same move in the Iowa Senate has not garnered the two-thirds required to do so. DES MOINES – A Des Moines man has been arrested following an investigation into a pipebomb found as a golf course. WHO-13 reports 41-year-old Michael James Valento is accused by the Des Moines Police Department of planting a live improvised explosive device at Waveland Golf Course on Thursday. Investigators say Valento is responsible for a pipebomb that was denotated at the same facility the week prior — no injuries were reported. Valento is accused of two counts of possession of an explosive with intent and arson, among other charges.

IOWA – Multiple rounds of thunderstorms knocked out power to thousands of Iowans in central and eastern Iowa Thursday into the early morning hours today. The National Weather Service offices in both Des Moines and the Quad Cities issued multiple warnings as wind gusts hit power lines in large metro areas Thursday evening into the overnight. Additionally, multiple flash flood warnings were issued, as many Iowa communities received over three inches of rainfall. Active weather is expected to continue statewide today. DAYTON – Two central Iowa groceries stores closed this summer, leaving the residents of their communities with half-hour commutes for supplies. WHO-13 reports Dayton Community Grocery and the Stratford Food Center both shuttered their doors despite community efforts to save them from closure. The closest store to Dayton residents would be in Jewell, which was forced to reclose but reopened after a series of community fundraisers. DES MOINES – The newly-named Caseys Center announced one of the biggest acts in modern music history is coming back to perform. Paul McCartney is returning to Des Moines on Tuesday, October 14th. This will be the former Beatles’ frontman’s fourth stop in Iowa, his most recent coming at the previously-named Wells Fargo Arena in 2017. Tickets are on sale next week.
