CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A Cedar Rapids Community School District teacher and his daughter were killed in a crash in Fort Collins, Colorado on Thanksgiving. KGAN-TV reports the two were killed while running errands on Thanksgiving. They were hit by another vehicle.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – One person died and three others were hospitalized after a car and pickup collided north of the Quad Cities on Thanksgiving. A car pulled in front of a pickup. The driver of the car died at the scene.

POLK COUNTY, IA (IRN) – An contractor accused of swindling several customers faces a felony theft charge in Polk County, according to the Des Moines Register. Dave Daughenbaugh, a convicted felon who owns Daughenbaugh Construction in Des Moines, was arrested last week after allegedly writing a $3,000 bad check. The general contractor had been accused several times of taking customers’ money and walking away from jobs before they’re done. The estimated cost of work he left incomplete on three house projects this year is $214,700.

IOWA (IRN) – If you’re planning to travel on Sunday, you may want to reconsider as more than a half a foot of snow could fall on parts of Iowa. A Winter Storm Watch goes into effect late Saturday and continues into Sunday. Most of the snow will fall south of I-80. Winds will gust over 30mph.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Two Iowa men who unwittingly sold elephant tranquilizers that looked like prescription painkillers have been sentenced to prison. KIMT-TV reports Cameron Lensmeyer and Evan Sage, both 20 and residents of Waverly, were sentenced to four and seven years in prison respectively. The pair sold hundreds of pills they obtained from a dark web connection. The men apologized, and said they were glad no one died.

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NE (IRN) – An Iowa man rescued his dog before he had to be rescued after he and the dog broke through lake ice in northeast Nebraska. KCRG-TV reports the dog was chasing a goose that the Sioux City man had shot when he broke through the ice. The man followed him in. Rescuers used a canoe to pull both out of the water.

DUBUQUE COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A Maquoketa man has been arrested after police say he evaded police in a stolen vehicle. KWQC-TV reports chase speeds exceeded 90 mph through Dubuque before stop sticks were deployed. Drug paraphernalia was found in the car.

MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – There have been 280 deaths on Iowa roadways as of November 21st, according to the Iowa State Patrol. With more snow in the forecast for this weekend troopers are urging caution while driving.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – An Lacona woman gave birth to a boy on the side of a road on Thanksgiving Day en route to a hospital in Des Moines. The Des Moines Register reports Heather Reed was experiencing contractions when she and her boyfriend, Michael Beller, were on their way to a hospital in Des Moines. But they didn’t get there quite soon enough. Beller pulled off to the side of the road, and called 911. With instructions from a dispatcher, 7-pound, 8-ounce Kaden James Beller was born. Reed and their baby boy are both healthy and doing fine. Beller said this Thanksgiving is the “best I could have asked for.”

MONTEZUMA, IA (IRN) – A 6-year-old boy died and two other people were rescued Wednesday after falling through the ice on a pond in Montezuma. KCCI-TV reports authorities were sent to a Montezuma residence on reports that three people had fallen through the ice at a privately owned pond. When officials arrived, they were able to rescue a 46-year-old man and a 12-year-old girl who were trapped in the water. The boy didn’t survive.

BRITT, IA (IRN) – A Britt man is being accused of 28 sex crimes, all with the same child. Jeromie J. Holland, 39, was charged Tuesday. In addition, the Britt Police Department says Holland confessed in 2015 to sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and admitted to a sexual assault against two other females under the age of 12 that happened when Holland was between 16 and 17 years old.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines man is in jail after threatening a group of people with a rifle. WHO-TV reports 52-year-old James Edwards faces charges including intimidation with a deadly weapon, control of a firearm by a felon, and harassment. Police say he got into an argument with other people at his home last night and armed himself with a .30 caliber rifle. He pointed the gun at others in the house and threatened to shoot them. Officers were able to take him into custody without incident.

BOSTON, MA (IRN) – An Iowan has been elected the student body president of Harvard, according to the Des Moines Register. 21-year-old Sruthi Palaniappan is a daughter of Indian immigrants and is a graduate of Linn-Mar High School in Cedar Rapids.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A federal jury has found two Des Moines police officers used excessive force and committed battery when they pepper sprayed and beat a man in 2013. KCCI-TV reports jurors awarded Dustin Burnikel $200,000 on for medical expenses, pain and suffering. Burnikel sued the city and officers Michael Fong and Greg Wessels. Burnikel says they attacked him after he shouted at them thinking they were assaulting a woman on a city street. The officers in plain black coats were attempting to arrest the woman. They claim Burnikel appeared aggressive, so they subdued him. Burnikel sustained back injuries, bruises and broken teeth.

CASTANA, IA (IRN) – A man from the town of Castana in Monona county has been charged with murdering his grandmother. Police did a welfare check on 66-year-old Cheryl Stowe after she didn’t show up for work. Eliot Stowe, 21, her grandson, was living with her at the time the alleged murder took place.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – It took a jury about an hour Tuesday to find Curtis Jones guilty of killing an Iowa City cab driver. KCRG-TV reports Jones was on trial for murder of 46-year-old Ricky Lillie. Jones was riding in Lillie’s cab in June 2017 when he shot Lillie and robbed him. Jones is also facing a murder charge for the death of 34-year-old Jonathan Wieseler. He was an Iowa City bail bondsman who was killed in April 2017.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines Police are searching for suspects in a Tuesday shooting that sent two people to the hospital. WHO-TV reports a gray SUV pulled up next to a sedan and two males in the SUV rolled down their windows and exchanged words with the passengers in the other car. The men in the SUV then began shooting. The male driver of the sedan was shot in the leg, along with his male passenger. A female passenger was uninjured.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa State will play Drake in football for the first time since 1985. Iowa State and Drake announced that the FCS Bulldogs have replaced Incarnate Word as the Cyclones’ Dec. 1 opponent. Incarnate Word qualified for the FCS Playoffs and opted to back out of their arrangement to come to Ames, creating a need for another opponent.
