FORT DODGE, IA (IRN) – Police in Fort Dodge said a former high school swim coach has been charged with sexual assault. KCCI-TV reports that 23-year-old Aaron Poldervaart, an employee with the Fort Dodge Community School District, has allegedly committed sex acts upon a Fort Dodge Senior High student. Poldervaart served as an Assistant Boys and Girls Swim Coach during the 2015-2016 season. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A Cedar Rapids man has been accused of stabbing another man in the head and neck. KWWL-TV reports 37-year-old Tramond Franklin turned himself into officers. He’s charged with willful injury. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A northwest Iowa man who hit five cyclists without bike lights several years ago is now pushing for stricter bike laws. The Des Moines Register reports Daryl Hasche hit five teenage girls with his motorcycle while riding in the dark five years ago. The cyclists were riding side by side, and didn’t have any lights on their bikes. A bill requiring flashing rear-facing lights on bicycles between sunset and sunrise is being written. MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – A woman has been arrested for an alleged ambush at the Cerro Gordo County Courthouse, according to KIMT-TV. 50-year-old Misti Lynn Thoe of Mason City is charged with willful injury causing serious injury. Thoe waited for a woman to exit the courthouse and then smashed her head into the concrete corner of the building. There were four witnesses, and a security camera captured the assault. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Fences have been placed between Des Moines City Hall and the Des Moines River after a sinkhole developed near the levee Monday morning. KCCI-TV reports that the hole is about 150 feet long and 25 feet wide. Business owners in the East Village are being notified that crews will soon be filling the hole. Officials are unsure what caused it. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The U.S.D.A.’s summary of last year’s corn crop shows it was record setting for Iowa farmers. KCRG-TV reports corn production reached 2.74 billion bushels, 9% above the previous record set in 2015. Farmers harvested an average of 203 bushels per acre, marking the first time Iowa’s statewide yield surpassed 200 bushels per acre. The state has led the nation in corn production for the last 23 consecutive years. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Governor Terry Branstad is having trouble getting his paperwork together for his new job, according to WHO-TV. President Donald Trump nominated Branstad to be the next U.S. Ambassador to China. He’s required to document all foreign travel, and he’s having a hard time doing it. Branstad counts 17 trips to Japan, another 6 to China, along with numerous other trips overseas. Branstad says some records were destroyed in a fire.

WARREN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – An inmate who died in the Warren County Jail last fall committed suicide. The Des Moines Register reports the medical examiner determined 26-year-old Jacob Dale Miller hanged himself in his cell. He was in jail on a domestic assault charge. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – University of Iowa officials sent out a crime alert Sunday evening, after a reported sexual assault earlier in the day. The victim reported the assault happened between 12 a.m. and 3 a.m. Sunday at a residence hall. The alleged perpetrator is believed to be an acquaintance of the victim. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Des Moines Police Department is warning people about a new phone scam, where the caller asks you to donate to something called the “Fallen Officer Memorial.” Police say they never solicit funds over the phone, so this call is not coming from them. There is a memorial fund for fallen officers, but the caller asking for donations in this scam is not part of it. POLK COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A 71-year-old man died after his kayak capsized in the Des Moines River north of Des Moines Sunday, according to KCCI-TV. Two friends were kayaking, and the one who was in the lead turned around to see his friend’s kayak had capsized. Officials say it could be a possible drowning, but it‘s unknown if the man had a medical condition prior to his kayak capsizing. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – Waterloo Police responded to a report of shots fired early Sunday morning, according to KCRG-TV. When officers arrived they found a 55-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital, where he died. The death is under investigation. JONES COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The Anamosa State Penitentiary was placed on restricted movement after several altercations Sunday. WHO-TV reports inmates were confined to their cells following fights that took place around 7 a.m. No staff members were hurt, but some minor injuries were treated on inmates. MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – The Mason City Disc Golf club held their second-annual Ice Bowl tournament over the weekend, according to KIMT-TV. Approximately 40 players from Minnesota and Iowa participated while raising funds and food for the local food bank. Over $1,800 and 900 pounds of food were raised. The biggest challenge? Players keeping their footing in icy slush.

LECLAIRE, IA (IRN) – A vehicular homicide case against a man who crashed his SUV into a group of motorcyclists, killing two and injuring another, has been closed because the suspect has died. WQAD-TV reports 52-year-old Darryl Wilson had drugs and alcohol in his system. MARSHALLTOWN, IA (IRN) – Fire crews in Marshalltown worked to put out a fire at a meat processing plant Saturday morning. WHO-TV reports the fire happened at the JBS Swift & Co. plant around 10:30 a.m. Crews say when they arrived on scene they had to put out a large flammable gas-fed fire at the methane collection lagoon. Nobody was injured. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – People walked up and down the sidewalks around Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids Friday protesting the layoffs of 63 custodians. KCRG-TV reports protesters held signs saying “save our custodians” and held up brooms and dustpans. The company is laying off custodians who are covered under a collective bargaining agreement and hiring subcontractors. COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA (IRN) – A Council Bluffs mother has been charged after leaving her 12-year-old son along an I-80 exit before school. The Daily Nonpareil reports that 33-year-old Shameka King faces child endangerment and abandonment charges. The boy says his mother left him after he got out of the car over an argument about which shoes to wear to school. The boy had no money or food. The mother verified the boy’s account, asking police, “What am I supposed to do? Be late for work?”

WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – A couple found dead in a murder-suicide at George Wyth State Park in Waterloo suffered from health problems. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that autopsies confirmed that 86-year-old Neil Miller shot and killed his wife, 83-year-old Marilyn Miller, before taking his own life. The Millers had medical issues and that people who knew them say the couple didn’t want to go to a nursing home. They’d been married 65 years. HARTFORD, IA (IRN) – A man has been arrested in connection with an overnight house fire in Hartford Friday. KCCI-TV reports firefighters found the house engulfed in flames. They later found a body inside. 28-year-old Stephen James Major had been staying at the home, and he was arrested in Marshalltown and charged with first-degree arson and operating a motor vehicle without owner’s consent. CRAWFORD COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A search is underway for a girl who disappeared in the Boyer River Thursday. WHO-TV reports she was one of five people inside a car that crashed into the river around 3 a.m. The four other people in the car were sent to the hospital for treatment of possible hypothermia. Officials had to call off the search Friday night due to fog. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The three highest paid state of Iowa employees are coaches. The University of Iowa’s head football coach Kirk Ferentz pulled in more than 4.8 million dollars this year. Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery earned 1.7 million, and the Cyclone’s head basketball coach Steve Prohm pocketed 1.6 million. University officials say the athletic programs are self-sustaining, and salaries market driven.

WASHINGTON, IA (IRN) – At least one person is dead in an early morning house fire in Washington. KCII-Radio reports the two-story house was filled with smoke, and flames could be seen coming from the attic. Fire crews responded, as did the coroner. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa’s ban on owning machine guns would be ended under a bill before the Iowa Legislature. The Des Moines Register reports Sen. Jason Schultz, a Republican from Schleswig in northwest Iowa, says his bill would allow possession of machine guns as well as short-barreled rifles and short-barreled shotguns made before 1986. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines woman is in jail, and her five children are in state custody after she was arrested Thursday for OWI 2nd. KCCI-TV reports police found 31-year-old Delora Jo White parked on railroad tracks. They found her children, ages 12, 10, 2, 1 and 7 months, along with a pit bull at a nearby motel. Two of the children were in dirty diapers, and officers had a hard time getting into the room because of trash blocking the doorway. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines taxi driver was drunk when he crashed his van yesterday morning, killing a passenger and injuring another. 29-year old Mohamed Diriye faces multiple charges. The passengers were from Kansas. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – A man attacked a mother who was putting her 3-year-old child into her car, and drove off the with vehicle in Davenport, according to WQAD-TV. The woman had set down her car keys on the driver’s seat while she was securing her child. The man grabbed the keys and tried to get into the vehicle. The two fought over the keys, but she was pushed to the ground. She was able to get her child out of the vehicle before he took off with it. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Food trucks may soon be able to operate around downtown Iowa City, but that has some restaurant owners concerned. KCRG-TV reports the city council moved forward with an ordinance to allow food trucks to operate between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. as part of a pilot program. Currently, food trucks have to stay away from downtown.
