CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – An officer-involved shooting occurred after a traffic stop in Cedar Rapids last night, according to KCRG-TV. The stopped driver began an altercation with the officer, who drew his weapon and fired. The man got back into his vehicle and fled. He then crashed into two vehicles, was arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment of his shooting and crash wounds. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – One man was injured and another was taken into custody after a confrontation led to a shooting overnight in Davenport. WQAD-TV reports 26-year-old Byron Blackwell was armed with a shotgun and confronted a man who was breaking into his truck. Blackwell shot the man, who was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Police charged Blackwell with willful injury-causing serious injury and going armed with intent. LINN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – One person died after a two-vehicle crash involving a semi truck in Linn County. The Iowa State Patrol reports it happened on northbound I-380 when the driver of a minivan veered onto the right shoulder of the interstate, then veered left across both lanes into the semi truck. The driver of the minivan was airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where they died. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines Police are looking for a gunman involved in a rolling gunfight Monday morning, according to WHO-TV. Witnesses say one vehicle was chasing the other, with an occupant firing shots at the vehicle being chased. Police have found the vehicle that was being chased and are talking with the driver, who is not cooperating. Police say it’s a domestic situation. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – One of the owners of a Waterloo store that a man tried to rob said he originally thought it was some kind of Halloween prank. KCRG-TV reports Syed Jaffari, owner of Jim’s Food, says a masked man came in and pointed a gun at him, and said “give me your money.” Jaffari says he surprised the man when instead of turning to the cash register, he turned away from it. The man fled. NEWTON, IA (IRN) – A developer is donating seven buildings in Newton to the Des Moines Area Community College. The Newton Daily News reports developer Reza Kargarzadeh announced Monday he would donate the buildings that once were part of the Maytag corporate headquarters to the college. The donation is valued at about $8 million.

POLK COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A motorcyclist was killed in an accident in rural Polk County Saturday evening. 57-year-old Joseph Anthony Davis of Des Moines was traveling with another motorcyclist when a minivan attempted to pass them. The victim was unable to get over as this vehicle passed and was forced to lay his motorcycle down when he then collided with a stopped vehicle. The victim died at the scene. No one was injured in the minivan. OTTUMWA, IA (IRN) – A hotel worker in Ottumwa saved a guest from flames inside the woman’s room Sunday morning. The Ottumwa Courier reports the blaze began on the fourth floor of the Hotel Ottumwa, but fire sprinklers kept the flames from spreading. Hotel employee Trevor Medina kicked in the room’s door and pulled out the guest. She was hospitalized with smoke inhalation. PERRY, IA (IRN) – Two people are dead and a third was seriously injured after an incident in Perry Saturday evening. Raccoon Valley Radio reports one person has been detained and is being questioned in relation to the case. Law enforcement doesn’t believe the public is in any danger. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A Dubuque man who was convicted this fall of killing his 27-year-old daughter wants a new trial. The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports 63-year-old Robert Stern killed his daughter, who was autistic, because he was tired of caring for her. Authorities say he shot at her in their home 17 times using three revolvers, striking her 15 times. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A man convicted of killing a homeless man in Cedar Rapids has now been found guilty of strangling a homeless woman. KWWL-TV reports Travis Standlee was found guilty Friday in the second-degree murder of Sharon Mead. Her body was found near Coe College. ROCKWELL CITY, IA (IRN) – Eight people are facing trespassing charges after protesting in the path of the Dakota Access oil pipeline in northwest Iowa this weekend. The Omaha World-Herald reports the arrests happened Saturday on a farm near Rockwell City. The $3.8 billion pipeline is designed to carry oil 1,200 miles from western North Dakota through South Dakota and Iowa to a shipping point in Illinois. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Man’s best friend joined in the Halloween fun Sunday in the seventh annual Spooky Paws Parade in Des Moines East Village. KCCI-TV reports dogs were dressed up as food, superheros and even Donald Trump. Some cat owners, jokingly, weren’t happy about this parade going to the dogs and protested. The small crowd carried signs, including ’cats rule, dogs drool!’ And “where’s our parade?”

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A 14-year-old boy shot in the head early this week has died, according to KCCI-TV. Yore Thour Jieng, a Roosevelt High School freshman, died Saturday. Yore was in a car being driven by a relative when the shooting happened. Two bullets also hit the windows of a nearby bank. The boy and his family moved to Iowa in 2002 from Sudan. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines boy has died from his injuries after he was hit by a car earlier this week. WHO-TV reports 12-year-old Josef Fuller passed away Friday night. The preliminary investigation indicates that Fuller was struck by a car operated by 25-year-old Samantha Bothwell of Des Moines as he crossed a street. She has not been charged. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Kids from Christ Church Presbyterian in Cedar Rapids built a fort out of boxes that they shared to sleep in at Veterans Memorial Stadium. It’s part of the 11th annual “Sleepout for the Homeless event.” The event aims to raise awareness on homeless and hunger problem in the area. Veteran Affairs Director Don Tyne says high rent rates and minimum wage jobs keep people homeless. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Researchers at the University of Iowa are studying some other worldly sounds. KGAN-TV says people describe the sounds as screams, Halloween music or a 1960’s science fiction soundtrack. This creepy chorus comes from the planet Jupiter, and is picked up by radio antennas made at the University of Iowa that are travelling on the Juno probe. The research may help prepare the earth for solar storms.

CHARLES CITY, IA (IRN) – A 27-year-old Charles City woman has been charged after being accused of sexually assaulting two underage girls. The Mason City Globe Gazette reports that Brittany Rae Beek was arrested Wednesday by Charles City police and charged with two counts of third-degree sexual abuse. JONES COUNTY, IA (IRN) – One person died after they crashed while trying to pass a tractor near Monticello, according to KCRG-TV. The car tried to pass the tractor in a no passing zone. The tractor turned left as the car was attempting to pass. The driver avoided the tractor, but lost control and crashed. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines police have charged a woman with election misconduct after officials reported she voted twice. The Des Moines Register reports officers charged 55-year-old Terri Rote with first-degree election misconduct on Thursday. She’s a Republican and Trump supporter who has been photographed holding a Trump sign at his rallies. MIDWESTERN UNITED STATES (IRN) – Can’t get ahold of your family member on the phone? Chances are they’re victim of a massive AT&T service outage. WQAD-TV reports portions of the Quad Cities have been effected, but the bulk of the outage has hit Chicago and Indianapolis. RIVERSIDE, IA (IRN) – A great horned owl has a sheriff’s deputy and zoologist to thank for saving it after it was caught in a barbed wire fence near Riverside. KCII-Radio reports Vera Jean Fitzgerald of Wellman and Deputy Jeremy Richardson found the owl, and Fitzgerald is helping it recover. Fitzgerald isn’t new to helping wild animals heal; she’s taken care of raccoons, foxes, skunks and moles in the past. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The zombies have arrived and they are attacking an Urbandale home, according to WHO-TV. For the next three nights a home on a sleepy cul-de-sac will be transformed into “Zombie Hollow.” It’s the work of homeowner Lew Jordan and his family. There is no admission, but the family is asking for free will donations for Sentinels of Freedom, a charity that helps wounded veterans.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa reclaims its title as a battleground state today, with both the Republican and Democratic presidential candidates visiting the state to make their case for the White House. WHO-TV reports Hillary Clinton is having two rallies in Cedar Rapids today followed by one in Des Moines at Roosevelt High School. Donald Trump is holding an outdoor rally at McGrath Amphitheatre in Cedar Rapids tonight. BETTENDORF, IA (IRN) – One person is dead after an accident on Interstate 80 at approximately 3 a.m. today. WQAD-TV reports the semi-driver lost control of his vehicle and swerved into a ditch. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – More than 700 patients at Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines were impacted by a hospital pharmacy tech who tampered with their pain medication. WHO-TV reports the unidentified employee has been placed on administrative leave and is accused of taking pain medication intended for patients and replacing it with saline. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – The home of a gay candidate running for a spot on the Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors has been vandalized. KGAN-TV reports Christopher Schwartz says anti-gay messages were spray painted onto his home. Police are calling it a hate crime. Schwartz says the vandalism occurred amid a heated social media argument involving a group called the Cedar Valley Patriots for Christ. The leader of the group says they aren’t responsible. CHARLES CITY, IA (IRN) – A minor theft could lead to more serious charges in Floyd County, according to KIMT-TV. 33-year-old Isaiah Weber of Charles City allegedly stole a police badge affixed to a memorial plaque on a wall at City Hall. Police executed a search warrant at his home and seized firearms and drugs. He’s in jail. STAR CITY, RUSSIA (IRN) – An Iowa native will embark on her third trip to the International Space Station, according to KCRG-TV. Peggy Whitson of Beaconsfield will be the first woman to command the space station twice. In her previous command in 2007, she became the first woman to ever command the ISS. Whitson and her crew will launch on November 15th from Kazakhstan aboard their Soyuz spacecraft.
