DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A 12-year-old was hit by a car while crossing the street on the southside of Des Moines early this morning, according to WHO-TV. A nurse who was a witness cared for the child while waiting for an ambulance to arrive. The child was taken to Methodist Hospital with serious injuries. Darkness may have played a role in the accident. FAYETTE COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Five people were taken to the hospital yesterday after a crash in Fayette County. KWWL-TV reports Nathan Gebel of Lansing failed to yield at an intersection and struck a pickup driven by Steven Chase from Waterloo. The two drivers and three passengers were hospitalized. Gebel will be cited for not yielding. SPRINGVILLE, IA (IRN) – A woman has died after she crashed into a Springville school bus in Linn County Monday. KGAN-TV reports 26-year-old Molly Zelinskas died from her injuries the next day. Zelinskas drove into the bus as it was dropping off a student. A parent picking up their child at the stop said the bus was stopped and had its flashing lights on. A student was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. ANKENY, IA (IRN) – Two pit bulls wandering an Ankeny neighborhood killed a Chihuahua Monday morning, according to WHO-TV. An 81-year-old woman was able to grab her Chihuahua and make a dash for her garage when the pit bulls turned on her. Fortunately, the garage door coming down scared the pit bulls away. The two pit bulls were declared vicious after a previous attack in 2014. Their owner apologized, and may face a fine. CORALVILLE, IA (IRN) – The longest-serving police chief in Iowa will soon retire from his job. KCRG-TV reports Coralville police chief Barry Bedford plans to retire shortly after the new year. He’s been in the position since 1988, and with the department since 1974. Chief Bedford recently turned 66. State law doesn’t allow people older than 65 to be police officers. CASCADE, IA (IRN) – The last time the Chicago Cubs were in the World Series, Kurt Ade of Cascade had just returned from Europe after serving in World War II. KWWL-TV reports Ade says he and other enlisted men listened to the World Series outside of the Officer’s Club, which they weren’t allowed to enter. He’s been a Cubs fan since his dad took him to his first game in 1930. The Cubs honored him this season as he took the field with Manager Joe Maddon.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines police are looking for a man who held another man at gunpoint and forced him to drive to an ATM. The victim was able to get away without being hurt. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A Cedar Rapids woman has been sent to federal prison for defrauding an elderly Illinois woman and her husband out of more than $100,000. KWWL-TV reports 37-year-old Tea Ware admitted that over a six month period she would call the woman and falsely tell her that she had won a lottery or sweepstakes and would receive a large sum of money. Ware told the woman she could claim her winnings only if she mailed her money for taxes or fees. WEST BURLINGTON, IA (IRN) – Des Moines County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence north of West Burlington to investigate a report of a burglary in progress. KTVO-TV reports the home owner found his basement door propped open with a backpack that was not his. Deputies arrived, and arrested 25-year-old Daniel Lusk of Burlington, who was armed and hiding under a pool table in the basement. Lusk resisted arrest, and is in jail. TIPTON, IA (IRN) – A bank in Tipton is cleaning up after someone backed a pickup truck through the building, according to KGAN-TV. A bank teller at Citizens Bank says the truck took out the back wall and hit the teller stations. No one was hurt. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – For more than 40 years, the University of Dubuque’s aviation program has helped aspiring pilot’s dreams take flight. KCRG-TV reports aviation students will soon have the option to choose; training in airplanes, or in a helicopter. They’re adding the program in response to the current helicopter pilot shortage. Helicopter pilot jobs are in high demand all over the world. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A new show is taking a comedic look at politics and the Iowa Caucus, according to KCCI-TV. “Embeds” follows the lives of 20-something journalists traveling with a political campaign. The idea was born from the 2008 Iowa Caucus when the creators were here embedded in a political campaign. The show will be available on the free Verizon go90 app, a new app for original content. Users do not need a Verizon subscription to watch the show.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – An elderly person in northwest Iowa has died from the West Nile virus, marking the first Iowa death due to exposure to the virus since 2010. Officials with the Iowa Department of Public Health only identified the victim as an elderly individual who was 81 years of age or older. HAMBURG, IA (IRN) – A 14-year-old boy has been killed in the crash of an all-terrain vehicle in southwest Iowa. The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office says the accident occurred late Monday afternoon in a soybean field about three miles east of Hamburg. DES MOINES, IA – A 14-year-old boy who is a student at Roosevelt High School was shot in the head in downtown Des Moines yesterday. KCCI-TV reports the boy was transported to Methodist Medical Center by private vehicle. He’s in critical condition. A potential crime scene at a downtown bank is being investigated in relation to the shooting. SPRINGVILLE, IA (IRN) – A car crashed into a stopped school bus near the Linn County town of Springville yesterday afternoon, according to KCRG-TV. Six students and a driver were on the bus. One child went to the hospital with minor injuries. The female driver of the car had to be extracted from the vehicle, and was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A Vinton woman has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison after pleading guilty to a charge connected to the fatal accidental shooting of a 14-year-old girl. KGAN-TV reports Robyn Merchant provided a rifle to her 16-year-old son, who she knew used marijuana. A teen other than the her son was handling the gun when it fired, hitting Emma Redlinger. She died four days later. DYERSVILLE, IA (IRN) – The owners of the Field of Dreams movie site near Dyersville say that for the first time they will allow tours of the house that overlooks the famous baseball field. The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports the group “Go the Distance Baseball” announced Monday it would open the house, which was used as a backdrop for much of the 1989 movie starring Kevin Costner. Approximately 100,000 people visit the location annually.

FAYETTE COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A Cedar Rapids man is in jail accused of sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl. KGAN-TV reports 25-year-old Niall Lewis met a 14-year-old girl on social media and lured her to various locations for sex over the summer. Authorities say that more victims may come forward and more charges could be filed. CHARLES CITY, IA (IRN) – A judge in Charles City has issued an administrative order banning guns and other weapons in and around judicial offices in north Iowa courthouses. The Mason City Globe Gazette reports that Second Judicial District chief judge Kurt Wilke gave the order Oct. 12. The ban covers the district’s 22 counties. Law enforcement and court officers are exempt from the ban. BURLINGTON, IA (IRN) – A house used as a supported community living home suffered an estimated $30,000 worth of damage after a fire broke out in Burlington Sunday. WQAD-TV reports three residents and an employee were able to get out without injury. The cause of the fire is under investigation and is considered suspicious. SCOTT COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A homeless man in Cedar Rapids is set to go to trial for his second murder charge. KCRG-TV reports Travis Standlee is charged with the murder of Sharon Mead, who was also homeless. Prosecutors claim Standlee killed Mead the day after he was released from jail, under suspicion of the murder of a second homeless person, Raymond Ursino. Police didn’t have enough evidence to hold him at the time. Earlier this year Standlee was found guilty in the murder of Ursino, and sentenced to 50 years in prison. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Des Moines at 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning. WHO-TV reports 43-year-old Sheila Hensley of Des Moines was killed when her vehicle left the roadway at a high rate of speed and struck a utility pole. AVOCA, IA (IRN) – One man was killed and three were injured in a crash Saturday night on Interstate 80 near Avoca. The driver of the car, Jesus German, lost control of the vehicle and it rolled multiple times before coming to a stop. The man killed was partially ejected, and his name has not been released. Troopers say speed and alcohol played a role in the accident. One passenger, Antonio Aguilar, was arrested on an existing felony warrant. The men are from Nebraska. AMES, IA (IRN) – Runners laced up their sneakers at the Paws to Cure Cancer 5K at Iowa State University Saturday, according to KCCI-TV. Some brought their furry friends along for the fun and to raise money to help fight canine cancer, the top cause of death for dogs in the United States. Organizers say cancer research helps not only humans, but our pets as well.

MUSCATINE, IA (IRN) – A body was found by a city of Muscatine employee at a skate park yesterday, according to WQAD-TV. The gender, age and identity of the deceased have not been released to allow police time to notify family members. Police have not said if the cause of death was homicide or accidental. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – The Catholic Worker House in Cedar Rapids says it has already exceed the number of homeless people it helped in all of last year, calling it an alarming trend. KCRG-TV reports last year the shelter served 240 people and so far this year, it’s already served 260. The shelter primarily houses women and married couples, and will soon open an overflow shelter. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Templeton Rye Whiskey will receive $1.6 million in tax credits to bring its entire operation to the state of Iowa. The Iowa Economic Development Authority approved the credits Friday. Named after the town of Templeton, the company came under fire when lawsuits were filed against it for false advertising. The whiskey, though bottled in Templeton, is distilled and aged in Indiana. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – The Hawkeyes had a chance to upset a top-10 team and gain an edge in the division. Instead, Iowa’s offense came up empty and #10 Wisconsin is headed home with a 17-9 win. The UNI Panthers crushed Missouri State 61-7. The Iowa State Cyclones had the weekend off, and the Chicago Cubs are going to the World Series for the first time since 1945.
