FAIRFIELD, IA (IRN) – A pedestrian was killed Wednesday evening in Fairfield. KCII Radio reports 71-year-old Thomas Calhoun of Fairfield was crossing Burlington Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle. The car was driven by 28-year-old Bryce Edmonds of Fairfield. Calhoun was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, but died. The incident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Police in Cedar Rapids are investigating an instance of shots fired in broad daylight yesterday. KGAN-TV reports people inside a red or maroon Pontiac Grand AM and a tan Chrysler van were shooting at each other. Several shell casings were found near the scene.

LINN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – One person is dead following a shooting in rural Linn County near Coggon, according to KCRG-TV. Police received a 911 call regarding an altercation and shooting, and when they arrived on scene they found a dead man in the backyard of a home. Five people were detained.

ROCK ISLAND, IL (IRN) – A body has been recovered from the Mississippi River near the Rock Island Arsenal’s hydroelectric dam, according to WQAD-TV. The body has been identified as 22-year-old Tyler Steeg of Clinton. Steeg and Keegan Rasmussen, also 22, were boating on the Mississippi River in November when they went missing.

BOONE, IA (IRN) – An armed and dangerous suspect in Boone may be disguised as a cop. WHO-TV reports a vehicle belonging to 43-year-old Ronald Steenhoek caused another vehicle to crash. Steenhoek allegedly approached the victims with a gun, pulled them out of the vehicle and robbed them. Witnesses say he was dressed like a police officer or security guard.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – State union workers held six different press conferences statewide Wednesday to ask legislators to include them in collective bargaining discussions. KCCI-TV reports hundreds of teachers, nurses, police officers and road crews gathered at the statehouse to send a message to Republican lawmakers drafting a bill that will impact 180,000 state workers. One teacher said “collective bargaining isn’t broken. Leave it alone.”

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – Multiple warrants are out for a Dubuque County man facing homicide charges in Wisconsin. KWWL-TV reports 38-year-old Chard Ernzen also faces charges of felony bail jumping after missing his recent court hearings. Ernzen was allegedly driving under the influence of drugs in Wisconsin when he crossed the center line, hitting and killing an 87-year-old woman.

WASHINGTON, D.C. The US Army Corps of Engineers has been directed by President Trump to allow the completion of the Dakota Access Pipeline. The executive directive will pave the way for the final phase of the controversial $3.7 billion project through Iowa.

HARTFORD, IA (IRN) – The son of a man found dead in a fire in Hartford last week has been charged with murder. KCCI-TV reports the body found in the fire was determined to be that of 50-year-old Robert Major. His son, Stephen Major faces arson and first-degree murder charges. Neighbors say the son had recently moved back in with his father. One neighbor says “there were issues, but I guess I didn’t think they were that bad.”

KEOKUK, IA (IRN) – A Keokuk man is behind bars on a charge of first-degree murder. The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation and Keokuk police responded to a suspicious death Monday morning. Later in the day 23-year-old Devan J. Williams was taken into custody. The name of the person killed and the circumstances of their death have not been released.

MILLS COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A Glenwood man is facing charges for his role in a crash that killed a bicyclist last summer. WHO-TV reports 34-year old Robb Phillippus hit and and killed 72-year old bicyclist Wayne Ezell of Jacksonsville, Florida on the first day of RAGBRAI. Phillippus has been charged with “Actions Against Bicyclists,”a simple misdemeanor. He could face up to 30 days in jail and a fine.

CLARINDA, IA (IRN) – A dog is being credited with saving a Clarinda family from a house fire.
The Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil reports the family dog awoke a 17-year-old girl, who was then able to get her mother and another person out of the house. There were no smoke alarms in the rental. Everyone is OK.

AMES, IA (IRN) – A Story City man has been arrested and charged following reports of an assault in Ames, according to KCCI-TV. 21-year-old Muhammad Younes allegedly pointed a gun at a man and assaulted him. Police say the two men knew each other. Younes is in jail.

FOREST CITY, IA (IRN) – A Burt woman accused of driving more than 100 mph to evade police in Winnebago County has been sentenced to prison. KIMT-TV reports 18-year-old Sierra King was ordered to serve up to five years in prison for felony eluding. King drove more than 100 mph in a 50-mile zone while fleeing a marked squad car in June.

CLINTON, IA (IRN) – A Clinton man turned himself in to police several days after a shooting. WQAD-TV reports 25-year-old Saul Jackson allegedly shot a man at a gas station. The victim suffered a single, non-life threatening gunshot wound. Jackson is charged with willful injury and possession of a firearm by a felon, each a felony.

AMES, IA (IRN) – Over 100 people at Iowa State University have been impacted by President Trump’s executive order banning travel from seven Muslim majority countries. WHO-TV reports a school researcher conducting work in Iran as well as an Iranian scholar coming to Ames this week both remain in Iran. An Iranian man scheduled to start graduate classes was denied permission to board his flight to the U.S. from Sweden. 115 students already at Iowa State are impacted by the travel ban.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Republican lawmakers have proposed a 1.1 increase to K through 12 education, according to KCRG-TV. Republicans say their plan is all the state can afford.
School leaders in Iowa City say the increase isn’t going to cover basic school necessities, and that if passed, the district would be forced to make cuts.

CLEAR LAKE, IA (IRN) – An Iowa kite festival will be getting some national media coverage. KIMT-TV reports CBS Sunday Morning is coming to Clear Lake to cover the “Color with the Wind” kite festival on February 18. “Color the Wind” is the largest winter kite festival in the Midwest.

WAUKEE, IA (IRN) – Two 17-year-old students have been charged with extorting $1,350 from an assistant principal at Waukee High School who has since resigned. KCCI-TV reports 40-year-old Josh Smith reported the students’ attempt last week. Smith resigned following an internal investigation, but school district officials aren’t sharing details.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A homicide investigation is underway in Des Moines after a man’s body was found in an apartment. WHO-TV reports an open window led a concerned citizen to check on the man inside. The person told officers they first noticed the window ajar on Thursday. The window was still open Sunday and when they went to check it out, they found a man dead inside the apartment.

WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – A truck ran into the Waterloo Fire Department Station #1 this morning, according to KWWL-TV. One person was taken to the hospital. Officials are investigating the incident.

MAQUOKETA, IA (IRN) – One person was killed in a rollover crash near Maquoketa yesterday. WQAD-TV reports the driver of a pickup drove off the roadway on a curve and rolled three times, stopping upside down. The victim’s name has not yet been released.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines man faces charges after allegedly threatening to cut a woman’s throat in Iowa City Saturday. KCRG-TV reports fifty-year-old Roy Hudson is accused of threatening the woman because of her religious beliefs or origin. He threatened her while she was at work as an employee at a store inside the University Capitol Center.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Members of a Des Moines-area church are hoping that President Donald Trump’s executive order barring citizens from seven predominantly Muslim nations won’t impact its plan to help a refugee Somali family resettle in Iowa. KCCI-TV reports the Central Presbyterian Church is helping the family of eight, who were travelling when the order was issued. Pastor Wallace Bubar says the family went through a several year vetting process by the State Department and Homeland Security.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Chicago Cubs’ World Series Championship trophy is coming to Iowa. It will be in Iowa City today from 5-6:30 p.m at the Iowa Memorial Union on the University of Iowa campus and at Principal Park in Des Moines on Wednesday, from 10-11:30 a.m. Stops are also scheduled for several other Iowa communities.
