DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A suspect accused of breaking into a Key West mobile home and killing the resident is in the Dubuque County Jail, according to KDTH-radio. 19-year-old Tacari Minifee was arrested in Maryland last month after Dubuque County authorities identified him as one of the suspects involved in the murder of 21-year-old Collin Brown of Dubuque in early April. He’s in jail on a one million dollar bond. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – A 33-year-old Davenport woman is being held in the Scott County Jail after police say she sexually abused a 13-year-old boy. The Quad-City Times reports Tabatha Jo Howard is being held on $10,000 bail. She’s been charged with third-degree sexual abuse and lascivious acts with a child. Each charge is a felony and punishable by up to 10 years in prison. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A driver found guilty in a crash that killed a bicyclist received the maximum sentence today, according to KCCI-TV. Jonathan Leyva Rodriguez received a sentence of 34 years in prison and must pay restitution of $150,000. Rodriguez was charged with vehicular homicide in a hit-and-run crash that killed bicyclist Gregory Franck. Two other bikers were also hurt in the crash. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa is among the worst states in the nation in having state mental hospital beds. WHO-TV reports a new study by the Treatment Advocacy Center says Iowa now ranks 49th in the country with just 64 state mental hospital beds. In the 1950’s there were 7,000 beds. Utah, Mississippi, Arkansas and Kansas are all similar to Iowa in population but have from 4 times to 8 times the number of state beds. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Police are investigating a shooting on the north side of Des Moines, according to WHO-TV. A man was standing outside with his brother Thursday evening when a car sped by, going about 50 miles per hour. The man yelled at the driver to slow down. The driver of the vehicle drove around the block, parked down the street, came out with a gun and shot at the two men. No one was injured, and police are investigating. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – An Indiana man convicted in the armed robbery of a Muscatine bank was sentenced to life in federal prison Thursday. 40-year-old Thomas Alexander Davis III entered U.S. Bank in Muscatine in November 2012, presented the teller with a black bag, demanded money and displayed a handgun. The teller placed money in the bag. Davis had been convicted in 1995 of armed bank robbery and robbery with a deadly weapon in Indiana. BLAKESBURG, IA IIRN) – A Blakesburg woman woke up to a bedroom full of smoke Thursday afternoon, according to KTVO-TV. Helen Neville said she was asleep upstairs when she started choking on smoke. She grabbed her dogs and rushed out of the house. The home is a total loss. As friends comforted her, Neville said “I just lost everything, I mean I lost — everything.” Officials are investigating the cause of the fire. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – Two traveling ship museums dropped anchor in the Port of Dubuque yesterday afternoon. KCRG-TV reports replicas of Christopher Columbus’s Nina and Pinta ships will be docked in Dubuque until June 26. Crews travel with the boats all over the world and are sailing the Upper Mississippi this summer. Visitors are welcome.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines man is in jail after he stole a $21 shirt. KCCI-TV reports when the owner of the fashion shop saw a man take the shirt off of a display outside the store, she confronted him. He pulled out a large knife and threatened her. When police located 43-year-old Dustin Ortiz he was carrying the shirt and several knives in his backpack. He’s in jail. LUCAS COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A Lucas County woman charged in a double fatal OWI crash has again been arrested and charged with OWI. KCCI-TV reports Deanna Gliem had an open container when a sheriff’s deputy pulled her over. A search of her vehicle revealed a Gatorade bottle filled with a beverage that smelled like alcohol, a shot of rum in her purse, and an open frozen Daiquiri mix in a cooler in the trunk. She had a Blood Alcohol Concentration of .112. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – Davenport police are searching for a man in connection with an attempted abduction. An adult woman was jogging around Glen Armil Park yesterday afternoon when a four-door sedan pulled up next to her. The man inside the vehicle asked her for directions but when the woman moved closer to speak with him, he attempted to pull her into the vehicle through the driver side window. She got away. He’s described as a chubby white male in his 20’s. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Crews responded to a three-alarm fire in the Court Avenue district in downtown Des Moines late last night. KCCI-TV reports crews were called to the Elliott Apartments next to Fong’s Pizza. Crews worked to rescue people in the 80-unit apartment complex. Everyone was safely evacuated from the building, and the cause is under investigation. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Gov. Branstad’s oldest son will be leading Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in Iowa. Eric Branstad confirmed to KCRG-TV he will serve as Trump’s Iowa campaign chief. Branstad runs a public affairs and fundraising firm in Des Moines. Gov. Branstad has been calling on Iowa Republicans to unite behind Trump’s bid for the White House. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – Muslim Americans in eastern Iowa are showing their support for the Orlando nightclub shooting victims. KWWL-TV reports Muslims at the Waterloo Islamic Center are praying for those 49 lives taken. Seema Iqbal says shooter Omar Mateen does not represent the Muslim community. She adds, “Islam does not teach us violence. Islam does not condone taking the lives of others. It’s the biggest sin you can imagine. There’s no forgiveness for murder.” ALTOONA, IA (IRN) – The IRS says Prairie Meadows racetrack and casino in Altoona owes $60 million dollars in back taxes dating to 2012. WHO-TV reports the IRS claims the casino makes too much money and should not be considered a nonprofit. Prairie Meadows board members say they’re confident they will be able to keep the tax-exempt status. They plan an appeal.

JOHNSTON, IA (IRN) – DuPont Pioneer employees in Johnston were forced to evacuate after an employee stumbled across a hand grenade in a corn field on the property yesterday. The Des Moines bomb squad disposed of the grenade, and employees were allowed back into their buildings. The grenade was a World War II-era weapon, likely left on the property for decades. The location was formerly part of the Camp Dodge training facility. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – Near record heavy rains yesterday in Dubuque caused street flooding, according to KDTH-Radio. Dubuque received 3.5 inches of rain through midnight last night. That total is just .16 of an inch away from the all-time record. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A recent report shows Iowa now ranks number one in the country for the most structurally deficient bridges. The report comes from the American Road and Transportation Builders Association. There are about 5,000 deficient bridges in the state and about 400 of them are closed. KCCI-TV reports Scott Neubauer with the Iowa Department of Transportation says lack of funding from the legislature is the main issue. BETTENDORF, IA (IRN) – A woman caught on camera stealing a package from a Bettendorf porch on Sunday has been arrested, according to WQAD-TV. Police say social media put the pressure on Marcia Cervantes of Leclaire, resulting in her returning most of the stolen goods the next day. Family and friends saw the video of her taking the package on Facebook, and encouraged her to return the items. INDIANOLA, IA (IRN) – A standoff in Indianola ended early this morning with one person being taken to the hospital. WHO-TV reports the standoff began last night when police were called to conduct a welfare check on 35-year-old Quentin McMurray. McMurray had barricaded himself inside his apartment on the town square. Perceiving a threat, police evacuated other apartments in the building and the nearby theater. McMurray was upset over custody issues with his children. FORT DODGE, IA (IRN) – A woman faces charges in a Christmas Day crash that killed a 6-year-old girl from Webster City. KCCI-TV reports Ruth Tomlinson of Duncombe drifted across the center lane while driving and struck a truck head-on. 6-year-old Payton Henry died one day after the accident after suffering a brain bleed and broken spine. Police say Tomlinson received a text about the time of the crash, but can’t prove she was texting while driving. Her phone was destroyed in the fiery crash. MARION, IA (IRN) – A woman was injured when a school bus hit the car she was driving north of Marion, according to KCRG-TV. A bus carrying about 20 Prairie High School students drove through a four-way stop and hit a car driven by 69-year-old Anne Wikle, of Davenport. Wikle was hospitalized. The students were travelling to a baseball game. PLEASANT HILL, IA (IRN) – A 16-year-old girl from Pleasant Hill who was last seen Monday has been located and returned home safely. WOI-TV reports officials received a call on Josephina Frank’s whereabouts after the caller learned about the missing girl from the media.

WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A man faces charges after an incident at a Hy-Vee in West Des Moines today. KCCI-TV reports store employees notified police when 41-year-old John Wesley Goodsell used a gift card that had been purchased with a stolen check. When officers arrived Goodsell got in his car and fled police, leaving his girlfriend behind. Officers followed Goodsell on a short chase that ended when he hit a retaining wall, then fled on foot into a neighborhood. Officers found him hiding in a back yard. He’s in jail. WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A West Des Moines man faces charges after police say he lit his apartment on fire in anger after his lease was not renewed. KCCI-TV reports 45-year-old Douglas Williams was upset that his lease was not renewed, and started yelling, stomping and screaming. When officers arrived, they noticed heavy smoking coming from Williams’ apartment, and neighbors trying to put out the fire with fire extinguishers. He’s in jail. OTTUMWA, IA (IRN) – Two men have been arrested in connection with an April robbery at Applebee’s in Ottumwa. KTVO-TV reports 22-year-old Bryce Sines of Batavia and 19-year-old Levi Mitchell of Richland are charged with First Degree Robbery. The two men approached employees at closing time wearing masks. One was armed with a hatchet, the other had a machete. They took about $1,400 in small bills. BURLINGTON, IA (IRN) – Police have confirmed that the foot found near Lake West near Burlington on June 8 is human. WQAD-TV reports the foot has been sent to the Department of Criminal Investigation lab for DNA extraction and analysis. Results aren’t expected for six to eight months. MADRID, IA (IRN) – Police found explosives at a Boone County residence west of Madrid yesterday, according to WHO-TV. The investigation began during a suspicious traffic stop Saturday. The driver, Leanna Haidsiak, consented to a search of her car, and the deputy found several pipe bombs. More were found at her residence. She and her housemate Tjaden Mallory face multiple charges. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowans are mourning those lost in the Orlando gay nightclub shootings. KCCI-TV reports Donna Red Wing, the Director of One Iowa, has planned an event — “’Love is Love is Love’: A Gathering to Remember”– as a chance for community leaders and residents to talk about the Orlando nightclub shooting, to mourn, to celebrate and to educate. The gathering begins at 6:30 p.m. tonight, and will take place at the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park in Des Moines. JOHNSON COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Small radio transmitters are helping Cornell College students research a threatened species of turtles that currently nest in a remote, dry area of Johnson County. KCRG-TV reports it’s research about migration patterns. Turtles are on the move now, and Professor Andy McCollum says if we see turtles crossing the road to give them a hand by getting them off the roadway and pointing them the direction they were going.

ORAN, IA (IRN) – An Iowa man is facing charges after allegedly vandalizing cars Sunday in Oran in Fayette County. KWWL-TV reports 69-year-old Dennis Lee Weaver of Oelwein, was arrested and charged with Criminal Mischief, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Controlled Substance. Witnesses report he was slashing tires with an ice pick on Main Street. DENISON, IA (IRN) – Two Denison residents were killed in the collisions of three vehicles near Denison in western Iowa. The crashes were reported around noon Sunday on Iowa Highway 39. The Iowa State Patrol says a northbound car crashed into a southbound pickup, and then both of those vehicles struck another northbound vehicle. 22-year-old Robbie McMullen and 19-year-old Emiliano Ramos are dead. Three others were hospitalized. LE MARS, IA (IRN) – A northwest Iowa man has been accused of stabbing his sister to death. WQAD-TV reports 33-year-old Thomas Bibler was arrested Saturday night after a short standoff at his Le Mars apartment. He’s accused of fatally stabbing 27-year-old Shannon Bogh at her Le Mars home. Authorities have not released information on what led up to the stabbing. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Police in Des Moines are investigating the death of a baby they say was left inside a sweltering car while his father lingered in a barber shop. KCCI-TV reports 36-year-old Lance Williams Sr. returned to the car to find the boy dead. He is charged with child endangerment resulting in death. It was 91 degrees. ALTOONA, IA (IRN) – An Adventureland employee died from injuries sustained while working on a ride at the amusement park. WHO-TV reports Steve Booher slipped and fell on the park’s “Raging River” ride on Tuesday. Park officials say Booher was helping assist riders in getting onto the raft. The ride remains open. LAKE OF THE OZARKS, MO (IRN) – A Dubuque man drowned at the Lake of the Ozarks over the weekend. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports 51-year-old Andy Burgmeier was swimming after getting off a boat in Anderson Hollow Cove on Saturday. Burgmeier went under the water, and did not resurface. The highway patrol’s dive team later recovered his body using a sonar scan. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – An Iowa State student from Waukee has been crowned this year’s Miss Iowa. The Quad City-Times reports Kelly Koch was announced as the winner Saturday night in Davenport. Koch will now represent the state in the Miss America Pageant in September in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Koch entered the pageant as Miss Polk County. She was one of 17 women competing in the pageant.
