DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – One man is dead and one man has been arrested for first degree murder after a shooting Thursday night in Davenport, according to KWQC-TV. The victim is identified as 29-year-old Brandon Smith. Police say 18-year-old Quantrell McDaniel was charged with shooting Smith after a confrontation outside a convenience store. INDEPENDENCE, MO (IRN) – A class-action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of anyone who bought diesel-engine Volkswagens in Iowa, according to KWWL-TV. A  Missouri law firm filed the lawsuit on behalf of a Missouri man who bought a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta from a dealership in Iowa City. It follows similar lawsuits filed in other states this week after Volkswagen acknowledged rigging emissions technology on its diesel vehicles to pass air-quality tests. ELKADER, IA (IRN) – A restructuring at Caterpillar raises worries that Iowa equipment manufacturers might be impacted. The Des Moines Register reports the Peoria, Ill.-based construction and mining equipment manufacturer plans to slash 10,000 workers from its payroll. It’s weighing closing 20 or more facilities. Caterpillar has one plant in Iowa, a facility in Elkader that manufactures excavator buckets and employs about 35 workers. COUNCIL BLUFF, IA (IRN) – Two greyhounds that compete at Bluffs Run Greyhound Park in Council Bluffs have tested positive for a potential performance-enhancing drug. The Daily Nonpareil reports two dogs tested positive for ractopamine, a drug usually administered to livestock that can increase muscle mass, open airways for oxygenation and decrease fat. MINGO, IA (IRN) – A Jasper County family is homeless after a morning fire on Thursday, according to WOI-TV. Firefighters were called out to Mingo for an apparent electrical fire. Only one person was inside the house when the fire started, although the family says they still can’t find a cat. The Red Cross is giving the family a place to stay. DES MOINES (IRN) – A teen has been charged with assaulting a police officer on a Des Moines street Wednesday. KCCI-TV reports the 16-year-old boy had just run away from a mental health services center when he walked up to the officer and punched him in the head. The officer suffered a severe cut above his eye. After he was subdued, the teen said he wanted to shoot the officer and then planned to walk to a bridge to jump off and kill himself. SOLON, IA (IRN) – Tens of thousands of dollars were misused by an eastern Iowa fire department, according to a state audit. State Auditor Mary Mosiman released a report Tuesday, revealing over $67,000 worth of funds were improperly handled by the Solon Volunteer Fire Department. Among expenses were stag parties, alcohol, and gift cards. KWWL-TV reports that regardless of the findings people in Solon are saying they support their fire department. NEWTON, IA (IRN) –  Newton Police have located two suspects wanted in a string of burglaries. WHO-TV reports 16-year-old Adam Joe Halterman Jr. and 17-year-old Daniel Wallace have been identified as the burglars. Wallace says they were just hanging out one day when the idea came to them to break into people’s homes and steal what was inside. The plan was to sell the items to people on Facebook. Wallace says in retrospect it was a “stupid” idea.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A Cedar Rapids man who conspired to distribute heroin and fentanyl that led to several overdoses and two deaths pled guilty today in federal court in Cedar Rapids. 43-year-old DeShaun Anderson was convicted of conspiracy to distribute heroin and fentanyl resulting in serious bodily injury and death.  Anderson faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence of life imprisonment. WEVER, IA (IRN) – Officials are looking for the person responsible for a bomb threat at Iowa Fertilizer in southeastern Iowa last summer.  KWQC-TV reports the company is offering a reward of up to $30,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual, or individuals, responsible for the bomb threat at the facility. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Avionics technology company Rockwell Collins has sent retirement offers to some employees as part of its plans to cut about 500 jobs from its workforce. The Des Moines Register reports offers are a way for Rockwell Collins to trim its payroll without layoffs. The Cedar Rapids company announced Friday that revenues are down, citing weak demand for business and regional jets. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Faculty leaders in the University of Iowa’s largest college have censured incoming school president Bruce Harreld over inaccuracies on his resume, escalating their criticism of his hiring, according the the Iowa City Press Citizen. The Faculty Assembly of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences voted Wednesday for a motion chastising the former IBM executive for a “failure of professional ethics” for misrepresenting his record on his resume. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A man arrested in connection with one death was released and investigators say he killed another person just hours after his release. KWWL-TV reports Travis Standlee, 44, is charged with two counts of first degree murder for killing Raymond Urisno and Sharon Mead earlier this month. At the time, there wasn’t enough evidence to hold Standlee for Urisno’s death, and hours later he allegedly killed Mead at a bus stop. Both were strangled. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting in Des Moines has been arrested in Colorado, according to KCCI-TV. Carl Allen West, 29, of Des Moines, is expected to be charged with first-degree murder. He’s awaiting extradition back to Iowa from Aurora, Colorado. Police say West was the man on a motorcycle who shot 28-year-old Matthew Cizek, of Des Moines. West and Cizek were “friends” who met in prison. SIOUX CITY, IA (IRN) – Sioux City Police still have no leads on a missing statue that used to sit downtown, according to KMEG-TV. All that’s left is a sign that says “stolen.” Missing is the “Goddess of the Grapes,” an 18 inch bronze statue. MAXWELL, IA (IRN) – A community is gathering to complete the husband of a widow’s to-do list, according to WHO-TV. The farm work is for the Myers’, a Maxwell family who lost a husband and father. Jacob died in mid-August after a car crash at an uncontrolled intersection. Among the work to be completed by friends and neighbors? Building a barn.

WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – A pistol found in a car in June has resulted in federal charges for a Waterloo man and a woman from Minnesota. 32-year-old Marchello Rembert is charged as a felon in possession of a firearm and with possession of crack cocaine with intent to deliver. Trisha Millard, of Rochester, is charged with being an unlawful drug user in possession of a firearm. DES MOINES (IRN) – A Des Moines woman told police an armed man robbed her from the backseat of a car after she entered the car to conduct a drug deal. The Des Moines Register reports the 18-year-old met someone over Facebook who told her to wait at Caribou Coffee and get into a car where she’d pay for THC pills and a pipe. But after she sat down, another man popped up from the backseat, put a gun to her head and robbed her. COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA (IRN) – A 30-year-old former Council Bluffs high school math teacher is scheduled to be sentenced in November after being convicted for having sex with students.  KWWL-TV reports Jeffrey Daugherty pled guilty Tuesday to felony sexual abuse by a counselor, therapist or school employee and nine misdemeanors. Daugherty resigned from his teaching position in February. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – An officer of Country Bancorporation has been charged with stealing more than $800,000 from banks controlled by the company. KCII-Radio reports Heidi Wagler, age 50, from Wayland has been charged with one count of embezzlement by a bank officer. If convicted, Wagler faces a possible maximum sentence of 30 years imprisonment. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A man has been booked into the Linn County Jail on two counts of First Degree Murder — but authorities aren’t saying who he’s accused of killing. KWWL-TV reports this comes nearly two weeks after he was arrested on Involuntary Manslaughter and other charges related to a Cedar Rapids death investigation. Travis Standlee is currently behind bars. MILLS COUNTY, IA (IRN) – An Iowa man is accused of shooting and killing his neighbor’s dog in front of teenagers, according to KETV. Four teens were walking the dog on a gravel road in Mills County in southwestern Iowa when Andrew Thofer, 30, shot at the dog once with a rifle from his vehicle, then got out of the car and shot the dog several more times. The teenagers took cover and ran. Thofer faces several charges, including animal abuse and aggravated assault. MONONA COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Police in the western Iowa town of Mapleton are investigating another suspicious death, according to KMEG-TV. Police say 58-year-old Daniel Hieber was found unresponsive. Hieber is the second person to die in Mapleton in the past month but police say the two cases are not connected at this time, and they are not calling Hieber’s death a murder. DES MOINES (IRN) – A former police officer from Maryland rushed to the scene of an accident to pull a seriously injured driver out of a truck that caught on fire Tuesday. KCCI-TV reports the truck ran a stop sign in Des Moines and hit another vehicle before nearly plowing into a home. Once stopped, the truck caught on fire and Steve Jones and another man pulled the driver from the truck. The driver was rushed to the hospital where he is in serious condition.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A 19-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting and beating to death a 66-year-old church secretary in Dubuque has pled not guilty. KCCI-TV reports written pleas were entered Friday for Helmon Betwell.  Betwell is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sexual assault for the September 1 death of Nancy Krapfl. Police say Betwell attacked Krapfl while she was out walking. BETTENDORF, IA (IRN) – Bettendorf police say they have identified five suspects believed to be responsible for an outbreak of vandalism at a city park and nearby neighborhood early Sunday morning. KWQC-TV reports three of the suspects are juveniles and two are adults. Police attribute tips from the public as leading them to the suspects. CORALVILLE, IA (IRN) – A 43-year-old Iowa City man has been charged for leaving his 4-month-old baby in a car in Coralville.  KCCI-TV reports Ahmed Jeddah was arrested Monday and charged with child endangerment. According to authorities, the child had been left in a car seat with the windows down for about 35 to 45 minutes. Jeddah came out to the car and said he had left the child in the care of his wife. LIVERMORE, IA (IRN) – The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is now caring for 10 neglected and emaciated dogs that were seized from a property in the northern Iowa town of Livermore. WHO-TV reports the ARL was called in to assist by Humboldt County law enforcement. The dogs are now being treated for medical issues and will be rehabilitated for adoption. The owner faces possible charges. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – One man was injured after someone opened fire on a group of people in front of a home in Waterloo Monday night, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. The gunman came from between nearby houses and opened fire. In addition to hitting the victim, bullets struck a parked car and the house. The victim’s wound is not considered life-threatening. DES MOINES (IRN) – The first license to develop a bird flu vaccine has been awarded by the USDA, a crucial step toward preventing another devastating outbreak like the one that led to the destruction of 48 million chickens and turkeys this spring. The Sioux City Journal reports the license was given to the Ames company Harrisvaccines, and authorizes it to continue testing the vaccine’s effectiveness and stand ready if the USDA gives the order to begin manufacturing. JONES COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A South Dakota man visiting in eastern Iowa is thanking the Jones Regional Medical Center staff in Jones County for helping save his life, according to KWWL-TV. Tom Szalat says it was a cold and snowy night in January, when his car rolled and slid into a creek where the car overturned and trapped him for more than two hours in the freezing cold. Szalat’s core body temperature was well below 80 degrees when rescued. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – There’s a stolen car in Des Moines that is not easy to miss. WOI-TV reports a stock car with a bright paint job and full decals was reported stolen from Tjaden Automotive last Friday. If you spot the number 38 stock car you are asked to contact Des Moines Police. The case is still under investigation.

MISSOURI VALLEY, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into a stabbing that occurred Sunday at a Shell gas station in the western Iowa town of Missouri Valley. The victim suffered multiple stab wounds to his torso and is currently in stable condition at a local hospital. The suspect, 30-year-old Tyler Jenkins, surrendered to authorities and was charged with Willful Injury. DES MOINES (IRN) – A state lawmaker says he’ll file legislation to block a Des Moines Water Works’ lawsuit over farm-caused water pollution. The Des Moines Register reports Republican state Senator Randy Feenstra of Hull says he’ll ask lawmakers to step in if a lawsuit against drainage officials in three rural counties isn’t resolved by the time the Legislature convenes. The Des Moines Water Works filed the lawsuit in January over high nitrate levels in the Raccoon River. SIOUX CITY, IA (IRN) – A man described by police as a transient faces five charges of arson after he allegedly set several garbage dumpsters and some railroad ties on fire in Sioux City. The Sioux City Journal reports police arrested Jeffrey Lee Rosenbaum, 51, on Tuesday after he was found near railroad ties that were burning. Rosenbaum admitted to starting several fires, but didn’t remember if he started others. Police say he apparently doesn’t have a motive. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – Police officers found an explosive device at a Waterloo home early this morning. KWWL-TV reports the bomb unit was called in to remove and disarm the device, which turned out to be a CO2 cartridge with a fuse. According to police, a man was walking home when he came across a group of people who had the device. The man took it, walked to his home, and called police. FORT MADISON, IA (IRN) – One person is dead and another injured in a traffic accident in Fort Madison. The Iowa State Patrol reports the driver of a 1992 Geo Prizm entered a ditch on a curve, and over corrected the vehicle causing it to slide into a utility pole. Names have not been released. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Two men have been taken to the hospital in Cedar Rapids as the result of a Sunday night stabbing, according to KWWL-TV. Police have detained one person of interest, but an arrest has not yet been made. DES MOINES (IRN) – Des Moines police were called to the Des Moines International Airport Sunday night after a man was caught trespassing, according to KCCI-TV. Police said the man punched an airport officer after he was confronted. The man – whose name has not yet been released – was taken into custody. MCINTIRE, IA (IRN) – An Iowan running for a school board seat in Riceville didn’t receive a single vote during the recent election–including his own. The Des Moines Register reports that on election day 42-year old Randy Richardson left his full-time maintenance job to go back to his farm in rural McIntire to bale hay. He says he didn’t have time to vote after work because everyone knows you have to “make hay while the sun shines.”
