DES MOINES (IRN) – Governor Terry Branstad announced Monday that 90,000 Iowa homes are expected to get a high-speed Internet connection thanks to a new grant.  Leaders of CenturyLink, Windstream, Frontier and Consolidated Communications will expand broadband Internet services across Iowa thanks to over $53 million in grants from the FCC. DAYTON, IA – A Dayton couple were rescued by first responders in an inflatable boat when Skillet Creek flooded their home. The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports Jim and Shelley Garland say they’re thankful to the firefighters who helped them and their dogs to safety. The couple lost three vehicles in the flood. DES MOINES (IRN) – State regulators appear to be giving up their battle to stop Planned Parenthood from using a telemedicine-abortion system. The Des Moines Register reports the Iowa Board of Medicine does not plan to appeal an Iowa Supreme Court ruling that allows the system to remain in use. The system allows doctors in urban clinics to visit via video with patients in outlying clinics who want abortion pills, and to dispense the pills via remote control. OTTUMWA, IA (IRN) – Ottumwa’s aquatic center has lost money for 13 years in a row. KCCI-TV reports that expenses exceeded revenue by over a quarter million dollars in the fiscal year that ended June 30. Officials say the costs to keep the pools filled with warm water and keep the lights on have tripled since The Beach opened in 1992. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – An overnight shooting at a strip club in Waterloo has left one dead. KWWL-TV reports the shooting happened around 3:30 Sunday morning at the Fantasy Theater.  Authorities say 27-year-old Justin Dollen was shot multiple times and later died from his injuries. Dollen has a criminal record that includes gun charges. DES MOINES (IRN) – Two people were shot outside a Des Moines bar early Sunday morning. WHO-TV reports the shooting happened near Mom’s Place on the east side of the city. Witnesses say they heard eight gun shots around 2:45 a.m. Two people were shot from inside a car, with one being hit in the chest and the other in the leg. One of the victims is in critical but stable condition, and the other is in good condition at a local hospital. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A 23-year-old Dubuque man has died after being hit by a train. KWWL-TV reports it happened Saturday night, near Key City Recycling in Dubuque. The train’s engineer said the victim came around the corner, got on the track and was then struck by the train. The name of the victim has not been released. SIOUX CITY, IA (IRN) – Iowa and Nebraska state officials say the Missouri River could be threatened by a downstream infestation of Zebra mussels from southeast South Dakota. The Sioux City Journal reports the mollusks will have a significant impact on the aquatic ecosystem, and that they can be a nuisance to boaters and cities because they attach themselves to boat motors, structures and water treatment facilities.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – A man was assaulted Friday night by six men in a bar bathroom in Iowa City. KWWL-TV reports the man spent an hour socializing with the men at Gabe’s Bar before going to the bathroom. There he was cornered and assaulted by the three males and three other males. The victim was reportedly knocked out and awoke to find his money and property stolen. DAVIS COUNTY, IA (IRN) – One person was sent to the hospital after their vehicle rear-ended a tractor. The Iowa State Patrol reports a Jeep traveling in rural Davis County struck the tractor Saturday afternoon. The tractor drug the Jeep a short distance before coming to a stop. The driver of the Jeep, 16-year-old Kerbe Howk of Bloomfield, was taken by ambulance to Davis County Hospital for injuries. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – More than 100 people walked from Davenport to Rock Island, Illinois to bring attention to overdoses in Iowa and to fight for the use of Naloxone in the state, according to WQAD-TV. Naloxone is a narcotic that can reverse the effects of other narcotics that cause overdoses, according to the Harm Reduction Coalition. Illinois allows the drug; Iowa doesn’t. DES MOINES (IRN) – A new Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politics Iowa Poll has Donald Trump maintaining a huge lead in the Republican Presidential race with 23% support. Dr. Ben Carson has shown recent gains and is now in second place with 18%. All other Republican candidates remain in single digits. On the Democratic side Hillary Clinton leads with 37% support, with Bernie Sanders closing in at 30%. VP Joe Biden, not in the race, polls at 14%.

STORY COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The Gilbert Fire Department was called out to rescue a young driver whose car washed off the road northwest of Ames. WHO-TV reports due to Friday’s heavy rainfall Squaw Creek went out of its banks. The driver was a high school-aged girl who was not aware the road had washed out.  The waters carried her car 300 yards downstream, and she was standing on the roof of her vehicle when rescued. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – A North Liberty man charged with fatally shooting a young woman in the Coral Ridge Mall in June will be tried in Story County. KCRG-TV reports the trial location has been changed because of extensive local media coverage.  Alexander Kozak, 22, is accused of shooting Andrea Farrington, 20, of Cedar Rapids, in the back three times at close range, killing her. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A man from the eastern Iowa town of  Ely pled guilty Friday to federal firearms and drug charges. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that in 2014 Matthew Robbins, 42, was convicted of eight felony offenses, including counts related to robbery, burglary, drug possession and drunken driving. Despite these felony convictions, he was later found in possession of a 12-gauge shotgun. DECORAH, IA (IRN) – A Decorah hospital was locked down Friday after a doctor was threatened, according to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier. The man who prompted a lockdown at Winneshiek Medical Center was located later off hospital grounds. The lockdown lasted about an hour, and emergency services remained available. DAYTON, IA (IRN) – Heavy rain caused extensive flash flooding in northern Iowa Friday. Perhaps hardest hit were the towns of Dayton and Stanhope, who reportedly received nearly ten inches of rain. WHO-TV reports Webster County estimates the damage caused by the flash flooding to be about $500,000.

ANKENY, IA (IRN) – Ankeny police said Friday that a man just arrested has been tied to at least 20 burglary cases.  KCCI-TV reports that during a one week period starting last Friday, police took multiple reports of vehicle burglaries, residential and garage burglaries, as well as three stolen vehicles and two hit-and-run crashes. Jonathan Lenaway, 20, of Ankeny, has been charged in relation to the cases. WASHINGTON, D.C. (IRN) – Across nearly all measures, farm sector profitability is forecast to decline for the second straight year. The United States Department of Agriculture says that net farm income will be down 36% from 2014. The 2015 forecast is the lowest since 2002, adjusting for inflation, and a drop of nearly 53% from the record high achieved in 2013. CHARLES CITY, IA (IRN) – A convicted sex offender who’s running for school board in Charles City has been arrested in another sex crime case.  KCCI-TV reports fifty-nine-year-old Doug Lindaman, of Charles City, was charged Thursday with sexual abuse of a 17-year-old boy. Lindaman was convicted in 1988 on two counts of lascivious acts with two minors. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Two Des Moines police officers were assaulted Thursday by a woman who allegedly stole beef sticks from a gas station. The Des Moines Register reports Conner Coleman, 18, was arrested on two counts of assault on a peace officer and one count of fifth-degree theft. An officer witnessed Coleman steal two beef sticks and as she was handcuffed, she began to “yell, scream and go berserk,” kicking the officers. LOST NATION, IA (IRN) – An unidentified person mowing an embankment near the eastern Iowa town of Lost Nation died after the tractor they were riding rolled down an embankment. According to WQAD-TV, a back wheel of the tractor dropped off the edge of the embankment, causing the tractor to roll down it.  The driver was then pinned, suffering fatal injuries. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A Cedar Rapids man has been found guilty of torching his apartment in April 2013. Christopher Perry, 29, was found guilty of first-degree arson and first-degree criminal mischief. He faces up to 25 years in prison. Witnesses testified Perry argued with his girlfriend, telling her he was going to burn her belongings. CEDAR FALLS, IA (IRN) – A man with a pickaxe attempted to break into an ATM at an AMVETS post in Cedar Falls. KWWL-TV reports the man wacked the machine for approximately an hour, taking a rest and a water break. On a hunch, police looked at surveillance video from a nearby Walmart, which showed images of a man purchasing a pickaxe shortly before the break in. No arrest has been made. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Insurance Division has issued a summary order to Carson Energy, of Austin, TX and its executives to cease and desist selling fraudulent unregistered securities. The oil and gas promoters were also ordered to pay more than $2.1 million in restitution to 14 Iowans.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A 23-year-old cellphone store employee told police that robbers sprayed him in the face with a chemical and beat him with a bat, then made off with about 50 iPhones from a Sprint store on Des Moines’ east side. The Des Moines Register reports the injured man said he thought the two robbers were familiar and had been in the store before. WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Governor Terry Branstad announced Thursday that two Iowa communities were selected to join the Main Street Iowa program — Centerville and Grundy Center. Branstad says Main Street Iowa communities have had 2.7 million hours of volunteer time invested into improving their city centers, a significantly increased job and business base, and over $1.4 billion in private investment. COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA (IRN) – Council Bluffs police are investigating two armed robberies early Thursday morning, according to KETV. A man armed with a machete walked into a Kum and Go and demanded money. The clerk complied and the man fled on foot. Two hours later a man entered a Kwik Shop, pulled a knife and demanded money. The suspect took the money and fled. The robberies are not believed to be related. EDDYVILLE, IA (IRN) – Witnesses to an accident on Highway 63 near Eddyville say a van went airborne off the highway on Wednesday before landing on a grassy patch next to the on-ramp. KTVO-TV reports the driver fell asleep.  They were taken by ambulance to Ottumwa Regional Health Center for facial injuries. DES MOINES (IRN) – The police officer who shot an approaching unarmed man through her squad car window in Des Moines has been cleared of any wrongdoing by a grand jury. KCCI-TV reports Officer Vanessa Miller shot and killed Ryan Bolinger, 28, of West Des Moines on June 9. Miller was assisting another officer who was in a vehicle pursuit with Bolinger. Police are withholding the in-car video as an internal investigation is ongoing. CLIVE, IA (IRN) – A high-speed chase through Clive ended with an arrest Wednesday night, according to WHO-TV. Police say Kevin Campbell is facing several charges in connection with the chase that approached 100 mph, including OWI and interference with official acts. He hit several cars before he crashed into a light pole and took off running. He was found hiding in a backyard. DES MOINES (IRN) – Three competitors say the Branstad administration erred in its selection of four other companies to manage the state’s $4.2 billion annual Medicaid program. The Des Moines Register reports they allege nepotism, fraud or mismanagement among companies selected and a flawed review of bids which was described as “haphazard, inconsistent, inaccurate, arbitrary and capricious.” IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Iowa City was ranked the No. 1 least-stressed city in America according personal finance company SmartAsset.com. 500 cities were compared, and criteria included average workweek length, daily commute, unemployment, divorce rates, housing costs, average hours of sleep each night, entertainment opportunities and exercise rates. Madison, Wisconsin and Duluth, Minnesota were 2nd and 3rd. Most stressed city? Miami, Florida.
