KOSSUTH COUNTY – A Webster City man died in a crash involving a semi in Kossuth County on Monday evening. The Iowa State Patrol reports a Ford Edge operated by 51-year-old Andres Garcia Exposito was traveling on a rural road and crossed into the other lane and collided head-on with a Freightliner Cascadia. Exposito died from his injuries. The driver of the semi, 46-year-old Daniel Eugene Murray, was injured and transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance. IOWA – Areas of fog and drizzle will persist or redevelop statewide through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. Over northern Iowa, enough cold air may result in freezing drizzle that may create slick and icy spots on lesser travelled roadways, bridges, and overpasses. On Friday, periods of light rain with at least a 60% chance are forecast with the rain coming to an end on Saturday. Conditions will be mild for the last week of December, with highs at least 10 degrees above normal. IOWA CITY – Another remarkable accolade has been added to the trophy case of Iowa native Caitlin Clark. The Associated Press awarded the former Hawkeye standout and two-time unanimous national collegiate player of the year with the Female Athlete of the Year award. A group of 74 sports journalists gave Clark 35 first-place votes, finishing ahead of Olympic gold-medalist Simone Biles. Clark is the fourth women’s basketball player to be honored by the AP since 1931.

DAVENPORT – Governor Kim Reynolds issued a proclamation today setting Tuesday, January 28th, as the date for a special election in Iowa Senate District 35 following the resignation of former Senator Chris Cournoyer, who was serving her second term in the Iowa Senate before Reynolds appointed her lieutenant governor on December 16th. Senate District 35 is located in Clinton County, as well as parts of Jackson and Scott Counties, and includes Clinton, DeWitt, Camanche, Wheatland, Maquoketa, and Princeton.DES MOINES – One of the most accomplished coaches in the history of NAIA football was named the latest head football coach at Drake University just days after winning a national title. Joe Woodley comes to Drake after spending the last 17 years across town at Grand View University. Woodley guided the Vikings to an undefeated season in 2024, punctuated by winning Grand View’s second NAIA national championship last Saturday. Todd Stepsis, the previous Drake coach, left to lead the UNI program after the retirement of longtime leader Mark Farley. IOWA CITY – Former University of Iowa women’s basketball player and radio color analyst, Jamie Cavey-Lang passed away on Saturday after a battle with cancer. The 41-year-old stepped away from assisting Rob Brooks with the radio call after the 2022-23 season. She had been a part of the radio team since the beginning of 2016-17. Cavey-Lang lettered at Iowa from 2001-05 and was a part of four postseason squads.

DAVENPORT – Nine Quad Cities men were sentenced to federal prison for their roles in a racketeering conspiracy, which included charges for murder, attempted murder, and drug trafficking. According to court documents, the Fifth Street gang members, also known as the “Arsenal Courts Posse,” “Zone Fifth,” “Fifth Street Mafia,” “Rock Town Money Getters,” and “Money Team,” were associates of a coordinated violent criminal enterprise based out of Rock Island, Illinois, but engaged in racketeering activity in Davenport. Don Christopher White, Jr., Raheem Jacques Houston, Deaguise Ramont Hall, Michael Linn Cross, Devell Carl Lewis, Lashawn D James Hensley, Simmeon Terrell Hall, Devante Atwell French, and Cortez Deangelo Cooper, Jr., were sentenced to federal prison time on December 20th for their roles in the organization. IOWA – The average acre of farm value declined in 2024, according to a recently released survey from Iowa State University. The Des Moines Register reports a drop of $369, due to higher interest rates, inflationary costs, and falling commodity prices. Values had been on an upward trend for the previous five years, but profits have dropped by 25% over the past two years. The biggest drops in value came over the northwestern third of Iowa, while multiple counties in the southern two tiers grew significantly.

DES MOINES – A federal grand jury in Des Moines returned a three-count indictment charging five Des Moines individuals with offenses related to fentanyl trafficking. Among those are Devonte Darnell Hassell, Ryan Redmond, Kevin Stanley Harris, Jr., Andonia Angel Devora, and Ricky Jamall Ellis. All face various federal charges related to the distribution of the drug following arrests on December 18th. Those individuals are connected to search warrants conducted in 13 locations across the Des Moines metro area and featured more than a dozen federal, state, and local police agencies. IOWA – The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services is reporting the first human case of avian influenza A(H5) in the state. The individual was exposed to infected poultry while working with a commercial flock in northwest Iowa. The person reported mild symptoms, and the case was identified through testing at the State Hygienic Laboratory and confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As of December 20th, the CDC has reported 64 confirmed human cases of H5 HPAI across nine states. The majority of the exposures are linked to infected poultry or dairy cows. IOWA -No significant travel impacts are anticipated for the coming holiday week, according to the National Weather Service. The main theme will be mild temperatures with highs often in the 30s and 40s. The week will start out dry with the first precipitation chances in the form of light rain or light snow southeast Christmas Day. After that, there will be intermittent slight chances for light rain for Thursday and Friday, but above normal temperatures will keep any impactful wintry precipitation out of the forecast.

DES MOINES – Several police agencies executed more than a dozen search warrants in the Des Moines metro area Wednesday. The Des Moines Register reports the investigation relates to an opioid-related overdose, which started with a Des Moines Police Department response, but has now been turned over to federal jurisdiction. A total of 13 search warrants were issued and included the Chicago and Houston Police Departments, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and other local, state, and federal agencies.IOWA – Iowa’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased to 3.1 percent in November, and the state’s labor force participation rate rose to 66.3 percent. Meanwhile, the U.S. unemployment rate increased to 4.2 percent in November. The number of unemployed Iowans increased to 53,000 in November from 51,000 in October. The total number of working Iowans fell to 1,632,600 in November. This figure is 400 lower than October and 20,900 lower than one year ago.ALTOONA – Iowa Donor Network has selected Angel Dominguez of Bettendorf and Joshua Brennan of Davenport to be honored on the 2025 OneLegacy Donate Life Rose Parade Float in Pasadena, California on January 1st. Dominguez is a heart recipient, and Brennan is an organ donor . Brennan, who passed away in March 2022 at the age of 41, saved and healed numerous lives through organ and tissue donation. His floragraph will be placed on the float. Dominguez received a heart transplant in 1992 and will ride on the float.
